BISMARCK, N.D. - A B-52 bomber was mistakenly loaded with five nuclear warheads during a flight from North Dakota to Louisiana, a newspaper reported Wednesday. The bomber carried advanced cruise missiles as part of a Defense Department program to retire 400 of the missiles, the Military Times said, quoting three officers who spoke on condition they remain anonymous because they were not authorized to discuss the incident. The officers said the nuclear warheads should have been removed before the missiles were mounted onto pylons under the bomber's wings for the Aug. 30 flight from Minot Air Force Base in North...

Rudy's Grand Illusion What Giuliani likes to remember about 9-11—and what he actually did (or didn't do) by Wayne Barrett and Dan Collins August 29th, 2006 1:10 PM When Rudy Giuliani looks back to September 11, he relies not upon the memory of the day itself, but on his memory of the telling of the tale, which he has recounted over and over. That is always the way for people who have lived through a complicated, high-adrenaline event. We sort it out in our minds, assigning order to the confusing rush of images. But there are invariably other realities—sights and...

Since 9/11 and the ensuing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the term "lawfare" has gained currency. As I discussed briefly in a prior column, "lawfare" is the effort to achieve or defeat military objectives through legal tools. In theory, lawfare could have beneficial effects. In reality, however, there is evidence it has been seriously misused, even abused. In this column, I'll discuss a few key examples. The Muhammed Salah Case In Chicago, federal prosecutors indicted American citizen Muhammed Salah, alleging he was part of a Hamas racketeering conspiracy. Salah, the indictment claimed, had delivered funds given to him by Hamas...

The man who fathered kidnapped teen Shawn Hornbeck was a convicted sex offender who did three years in a Missouri prison on drug and sodomy charges, The Post has learned. The late Walter Hornbeck was 60 when Shawn was born to him and his wife, Pamela Akers. He had little contact with his son, Akers said. Akers kicked him out of the house when the boy was just 6 months old, and the couple divorced in 1992, about a year after Shawn was born. Hornbeck was arrested in Washington County, near St. Louis, on Sept. 30, 1992, and charged with...

SARASOTA (AP) - A weeping Joseph Smith apologized Tuesday for the abduction, rape and murder of 11-year-old Carlie Brucia two years ago, telling a judge he had taken large amounts of cocaine and heroin that day in hopes of killing himself. Smith told Circuit Judge Andrew Owens, who will sentence him to death or life in prison, "I do not ask for mercy for myself. The only thing I can see to give me a life sentence is for my family. I do not want to see...
