Retired Army Gen. David Petraeus will be the guest of honor at 11 a.m. Oct. 31 at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center at 321 S. William St. Petraeus is a "hometown boy" from Cornwall that former congressman Ben Gilman takes pride in being the official who appointed to West Point, where he became an honor graduate. After his military career, Petraeus served as director of the CIA. His visit is hosted by a group of business leaders led by philanthropist Bill Kaplan, who is a friend of the general and proud of his service to our nation. The public is...

Like kick the can, the media will play its usual noisy game today. Obama scored, Obama won, poll numbers rising. The clatter will be deafening. But as the din subsides over the next few days, a sinking feeling in the pits of the stomaches of ordinary Americans will mirror the sentiment on Wall Street. This is a carpe diem moment. This should be the moment Sarah Palin makes a self-directed foray into a forum of her own choosing. She should boldly grab the spotlight, and, by using YouTube, address the American people. She can create her own bully pulpit. Handlers...

http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081207/peggy-noonan-lesley-stahl-and-friends-raise-more-money-wThe purse strings haven’t completely closed for start-ups looking to raise money–even niche Web sites that hope to stay afloat by selling advertising. Wowowow.com, a site launched earlier this year, which targets women over 40, has raised a $1.5 million round led by Bob Pittman’s Pilot Group and the Rhime Group. No word on valuation, but I’d guesstimate Wowowow.com’s investors peg its value in the high 9-figure range. The company has now raised $3.1 million in less than a year. The five founders–former publisher Joni Evans, “60 Minutes” reporter Lesley Stahl; New York Post gossip columnist Liz Smith; ad exec...

Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) moves since the November elections have shaken up some of her colleagues, with some looking over their shoulders and others worried about how the Speaker will lead her expanded majority in 2009. Next year is regarded as the biggest legislative opportunity for Democrats since 1993, the last time they controlled the White House and both chambers of Congress. But not all Democrats are celebrating. Liberals are worried about Pelosi’s vow to govern “from the middle” and centrists are concerned that the make-up of the House leadership team has shifted noticeably to the left. Contrary to the...

FLASH: More Dems than Republicans voted in Cornwall on Feb. 5 There were 1063 people who voted in the Democratic presidential primary in Cornwall on Tuesday, and 990 who voted in the Republican primary. It was likely the first time that any election in Cornwall brought out more Democratic voters than Republican. (Cornwall has 3070 registered Republicans and 2340 registered Democrats.) "It's a historic election," says Arthur Davidson, chair of the Cornwall Democratic Committee. "This has never happened before. An African-American running for the Democratic nomination for president..and a woman... If this doesn't get you excited about politics, nothing would."

NEW YORK The Pittsburgh newspaper owned by conservative billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife yesterday called the Bush administration's plans to stay the course in Iraq a "prescription for American suicide." The editorial in the Tribune-Review added, "And quite frankly, during last Thursday's news conference, when George Bush started blathering about 'sometimes the decisions you make and the consequences don't enable you to be loved,' we had to question his mental stability." ...

CIVIL RIGHTS THREATENED BY DANGEROUS DOG LAWS, AND BREED SPECIFIC LEGISLATION We citizens of the United States of America are still engaged in a civil rights struggle. This struggle knows no racial boundaries, it knows no social status, it knows no financial status. It affects every person, from the poorest, to the most affluent, from the city dweller, to the largest land owner. It goes to our most ancient and traditional property, and to our ownership and use rights in animals. Dog/animal ownership is as varied, as is the human tapestry that bonds our great nation. When we site the...

AP Middle-Class Job Losses Batter Workforce Sunday January 1, 8:53 pm ET By Kathy Barks Hoffman, Associated Press Writer Middle-Class Job Losses Batter Workforce As Companies Slash Payrolls, Send Jobs Overseas LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Thirty years ago, Dan Fairbanks looked at the jobs he could get with his college degree and what he could make working the line at General Motors Corp., and decided the GM job looked better. I watched Fox News over the last few days. I don't have tv, as of recently, at my own home. Self-editing in order to get to all those books that never get read when TV is a click away. Daughter needs a break from the easy entertainment, too. Been there, done that before; and read a lot! But, anyway, I was on vacation at the Beach with TV, and glad for it. The news had us riveted to the monitor. The chaos was cataclysmic. What was happening? Were welfare blacks going mad? Where was the Governor? Was the government ignoring...

March 22 At 3 p.m. today, in solidarity with Terri Schiavo, I and a group of Harvard students (who have signed with me below) began a hunger strike that will last until Terri’s feeding tube is reinserted or until the hour she dies by sanction of the U.S. courts at the behest of her husband Michael Schiavo and his lawyers. So far we have been joined by a student from Weston Jesuit School of Theology and we welcome others to join with us as well. We have been inspired in this effort by the example of Terri Schiavo's sister, Suzanne...

By all objective standards, this ought to be a Democratic year. The recovery isn’t recovering. The national adventure in Iraq has not only gone sour, it is now clear to everyone that it was launched on a contrived and specious premise. Meanwhile, the president’s economic policies perfectly express the mean-spirited self-interest behind the conservative revolution that he leads, while he seems oblivious to the disaster. Besides, he didn’t win the popular vote last time around. John Kerry ought to be mopping the floor with him. And yet it is George W. Bush who is drawing the adoring throngs in the...

Friends, I was searching around on a well-known job board and I came across this listing. I think it is frightening. As the mother of two teens, I cannot begin to explain the sexualization of this generation especially as promulgated by television. This new cable network should be met head on and now by the same folks who have been attacking CBS et al. Advertisers should be made aware of the displeasure of average Americans. We now have the media's and the corporate world's attention. Let's keep them on their toes! MTV Networks To Launch LOGO A New Television Network...

At approximately 1:15, Roger Hedgecock, sitting in behind the golden EIB microphone for Rush Limbaugh, interviewed Rush's brother, David. Rush, as fans know, is in rehab for an addiction to pain medication.David spoke passionately about how completely united the Limbaugh family is around Rush at this difficult time as he makes his recovery and David stressed every family member's support. Good news for fans of Mr. O'Brien! Cry of Stone, the long awaited 5th installment in his Children of the Last Days series, has been published according to a mailing we received today from Ignatius Press (although it is not yet on their web site). For those who do not know, the series - which includes Father Elijah, Strangers and Sojourners, Plague Journal and Eclipse of the Sun - is an amazing and compelling body of work. Roughly similar to the Left Behind series in that it is a modern day apocalypse, it is far superior in terms of its grasp...
