Imagine a safe, clean nuclear reactor that used a fuel that was hugely abundant, produced only minute quantities of radioactive waste and was almost impossible to adapt to make weapons. It sounds too good to be true, but this isn’t science fiction. This is what lies in store if we harness the power of a silvery metal found in river sands, soil and granite rock the world over: thorium. One ton of thorium can produce as much energy as 200 tons of uranium, or 3.5 million tons of coal, and the thorium deposits that have already been identified would meet...

There’s no better way to see D.C. than on the back of a Harley! My family may be used to snowmachines more so than motorcycles (though you couldn’t tell it with Todd driving a hog today with Piper on the back and with Bristol riding on the back of another bike). But whether you’re riding the open road or the frozen tundra, you’re celebrating a free spirit. What could be more American than that? Today’s Rolling Thunder rally in DC is all about freedom. And it’s about duty and loyalty and service. The message heard loud and clear through the...

I need some info on good cigars. Not where to buy them per say but some specific brands and why they are good. As I have never bought cigars before I really have no idea what to look for. I want to at least get the bossman a gift I know he will enjoy... so please help. I know this is leaving itself open for snarky comments but I would appreciate it if the forum wise guys could restrain themselves.

Forgive me if this is previously posted.... I just can't believe they are going to try this crap. I checked this out and it is true. There will be a 1% transaction tax on any financial transaction with the exception of purchase and sale of stock. If we make a $500 ATM withdrawal, we will pay $5 tax, and $300 on a $30,000 car purchase. I checked this out on Truth or Fiction and it is true. The bill is HR-4646 introduced by US Rep Peter deFazio D-Oregon and US Senator Tom Harkin D-Iowa. It is now in committee and...

LETTER FROM THE BOSS..... As the CEO of this organization, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barrack Obama is our President, and that our taxes, and government fees will increase in a BIG way. To compensate for these increases, our prices would have to increase by about 10%. Since we cannot increase our prices right now due to the dismal state of the economy, we will have to lay off six of our employees instead. This has really been bothering me, since I believe we are family here and I didn't know how to choose who would have...

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Sometimes the cliché fits: It looks like a bomb went off—not necessarily in this lab, but somewhere, with the aftermath seemingly carted here. The gutted remains of a sedan, its engine exposed, the seats ripped out of the frame, sits encased in cables. At other workstations the focus is a single part—an isolated camshaft, an alternator hooked up to test apparatus. It would be easy to misinterpret this place and think that researchers at MIT’s Lab for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems (LEES) are either piecing back together some shattered car or entering the Automotive X Prize. In...

This year, more than 21,000 people will be diagnosed with some form of brain cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. While benign forms are relatively easy to treat, malignant tumors require a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Even then, tumor cells may remain deeply lodged, replicating and spreading quickly through healthy brain tissue. Now researchers at Yale University have found that a virus that's in the same family as rabies effectively kills an aggressive form of human brain cancer in mice. Using time-lapse laser imaging, the team watched vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) rapidly home in on brain tumors,...

A US warship successfully shot down a target missile warhead over the Pacific in a test of a sea-based missile defense system, the US military said. A Japanese destroyer performed surveillance and tracking exercises during the test, marking the first time any US ally has taken part in a US missile defense intercept test, the US Missile Defense Agency said. The test came amid a confrontation with North Korea over its preparations to launch a long-range missile. The sea-based system tested off Hawaii is designed to counter only short or medium range missiles, but the cruisers and destroyers that took...

A couple of weeks ago, it was the flap over a Spanish rendition of the national anthem. Now it's a controversy over a demand that customers speak English when ordering a Geno's Cheese Steak in South Philadelphia. Customers have ordered cheese steaks from Geno's in South Philadelphia for 40 years. Recently they've been met by a controversial sign that reads: "This is America. When ordering speak English." Owner, Joey Vento questions the controversy. "Joey Vento/Geno's Owner: "Whoa, whoa, whoa - this is America. And God forbid Joey Vento says this is America. You speak English in America."

This is somthing that was posted on an obscure forum that I visit on occasion. It is associated with a sci-fi webcomic. I read it. Some of the rhyme schemes don't go to well and its reads rough in some spots but the last line packs a gut punch. A soldiers thoughts. When war has come Young men die On orders from above. We go to where we are sent And do what must be done. Why then is there hate for us? Why when we lay down our lives? We sacrifice so much for you and all you do...

It is my honor and responsibility to stand before you today and offer my best ideas to meet our state’s recurring structural budget crisis. My administration’s work over the past two months has surely deepened my understanding of the challenge of fixing our broken fiscal policies. I must say, Governor Codey was on target when in November he jokingly said, “my transition report can be summed up simply - The state is pretty much broke.” Today more than in November, I realize he was pretty much right. Now more then ever, I appreciate how difficult our work over the next...

TRENTON (Reuters) - New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine will unveil a $30.9 billion budget plan for fiscal 2007 on Tuesday that will seek to close a projected $3.8 billion gap partly by raising the state's sales tax and by slowing state spending by about $2 billion, the state treasurer said. ADVERTISEMENT Philadelphia, March Corzine's proposed budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 would be up 9 percent from the $28.3 billion budget in fiscal 2006, state Treasurer Bradley Abelow said in a briefing for reporters at the state house on Monday. Most of that increased spending came in part...

Apparently, a lot of you went nuts over TheCarConnection's Wild, Weird, and Wacky Street Names Contest, at least if we judge by the number of entries that flooded into our digital mailbox - more than 2500 arrived since the competition was launched last December. And though we officially closed things off on February 1, we're still seeing a few stragglers offering up some last-minute oddities. We've seen lots of Deer Licks, Bone Licks, and more than a few Yankees, Doodles, and Dandies. There are a surprising number of This-a-ways and That-a-ways, as well as a few places around the country...

(FORTUNE Magazine) - You probably don't know it, but the answer to America's gasoline addiction could be under the hood of your car. More than five million Tauruses, Explorers, Stratuses, Suburbans, and other vehicles are already equipped with engines that can run on an energy source that costs less than gasoline, produces almost none of the emissions that cause global warming, and comes from the Midwest, not the Middle East. These lucky drivers need never pay for gasoline again--if only they could find this elusive fuel, called ethanol. Chemically, ethanol is identical to the grain alcohol you may have spiked...
