TRENTON (Reuters) - New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine will unveil a $30.9 billion budget plan for fiscal 2007 on Tuesday that will seek to close a projected $3.8 billion gap partly by raising the state's sales tax and by slowing state spending by about $2 billion, the state treasurer said. ADVERTISEMENT Philadelphia, March
Corzine's proposed budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 would be up 9 percent from the $28.3 billion budget in fiscal 2006, state Treasurer Bradley Abelow said in a briefing for reporters at the state house on Monday.
Most of that increased spending came in part from fully funding obligations the state had previously ignored and mandated increases in some programs, Abelow said.
One of the few spending cuts Abelow cited were a reduction in funding of about $169 million, or 8 percent, for the state's universities and colleges. In addition, the state is expected to save about $53 million by trimming about 1,000 workers from the state-funded workforce of about 54,000.

This raising tax on cigarettes, really only hurts the poor. Poor people are prone to smoke more than wealthier, educated people. That's just the facts. So he's raising taxes on the poor. Nice.

mandated increases in some programs
Socialism is your friend, really. All you need to do is get on board and get you some...if you would just need the government then you wouldn't care that your taxes were being raised...it really is for the betterment of all. /s
How long before the minority are paying all the taxes and the majority are getting a government handout?
"The nations that continue to go with bloated Nanny States will slow down, they'll lose businesses, they'll lose investment, and they are going to get in a much worse situation. We have the data now to do cross-country comparisons and see why governments fail -- and they fail because they have generous Nanny States." This is truly deja vu all over. Everytime a demonicrat runs for gov in NJ he promises not to raise taxes. Then he wins and get inaugurated and then he raises taxes. The last 5 have done it and most have not served a second term.

That's funny! When republicans do it, it's a cut. Not only is it called a cut, its also referred to as gutting programs
To: mortal19440
No Problem I am going to make a point everyday of doing so...
"So hows the grocery bill?"
"What did you get for a property tax rebate?"
etc.etc.etc.
I am going to do it everyday till they avoid me like the plague! And then I am going to hunt them down and do it some more!

"However, the state's poorest residents will get a break. Some 400,000 low-income residents will no longer be required to pay state income taxes, and 200,000 others will pay less next year. And, 50,000 additional families and children would get health insurance under an expanded FamilyCare program."
That's it get more people off the tax rolls and dump the obligation on the middle class.
