  • BBC Getting Closer To Launching 24-Hour News Channel In America?

So do I. It's the only place where I can find out stories from around the world. I would welcome expanded newscasts. But I don't like their leftist slant. I miss Michele Husain. Katty Kay started out ok, but she's really a lefty it turns out. Husain provided much more balanced covereage and did great interviews.

Agreed... I don't like their bias, but BBC news is the only organization that provides any sort of in-depth coverage of serious international news. I can't stand FOX anymore because of their non-stop tabloid-like coverage of stories like Laci Peterson and Natalie Holloway. CNN is obviously a joke too....

Wrong. There was only one Presidential election when Rudy was mayor -- 1994. He endorsed Dole: http://cgi.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1996/news/9610/26/daywrap/

Agreed, I saw the movie when it first came out and before the controvery about the ending. The euthanasia scene made me slightly uncomfortable but I did not get the idea that it was necessarilly promoting it.

I live in Halifax , and I wear cologne and aftershave all the time and never had a problem. So I think the information in this article is out of date (I didnt live here in 2000 when this article was written ... so I don't know what it was like then).

He might as well go in the debate, he's not that much kookier than Al Sharpton or Dennis Kucinich.

I'm actually blown away by this. I always thought Jason Priestley was another hollywood liberal.

He's also (or at least was) a Canadian, proving once again that not all Canadians are anti-American leftists.

Wish the cable companies up here would broadcast FOX!!!!

No kidding, I've been bugging my cable company for over a year to get FOX — they've told me that the CRTC (the thought police) won't approve it.

Interesting that we are allowed to have both CNN and MSNBC (which hardly anyone watches) but not the number one news channel: FOX.

I think Gore had an advantage in 2000 because he was from the incumbent party, that gave him strength in states like WI, MN, PA, and MI that he won narrowly because independents were wary abput voting for Bush (remember the last minute DUI revelation?). Unless Bush really screws up, which is highly unlikely and the economy is only going to get better, he will almost certainly carry those states he lost narrowly in 2000. Also if he remains moderately popular (60% or greater approval), he will be competitive in states like IL, NJ, CA, MD, WA and OR.

There's no way Gore can possibly win in '04, and Kerry would probably do even worse. IMHO the dems can only win if they run a moderate — and they're not going to do that.

Wouldn't surprise me, considering she voted for Bush's tax cut and the Iraq resolution. She's obviously trying to make herself seem like a moderate.

Official: A China Airlines flight to Hong Kong missing over Taiwanese waters

TAIPEI, Taiwan, May 25, 2002 (AP WorldStream via COMTEX) -- A China Airlines flight to Hong Kong with more than 200 people on board has been reported missing for nearly an hour Saturday afternoon in the Taiwan Strait, an official said.

Flight C1611 took off about 3:30 p.m. (0730 GMT) from Taipei's international airport and was reported missing near about 4:15 p.m. (0815 GMT) near Penghu, a group of islands off Taiwan's western coast, Chuang Suo-hang, a government spokesman.

About 220 passengers and crew were on the Boeing 747, TVBS cable news reported.

China Airlines, Taiwan's biggest airline, did not immediately comment on the report. But the airline has joined the government in forming an emergency taskforce to search for the missing plane, Chuang said. Taiwan's air force and coast guard were looking for the aircraft, he said.

Due to a series of crashes in the 1990s, China Airlines used to be considered one of the world's most dangerous airlines. But in recent years, the carrier has reshuffled its board and has put a greater emphasis on safety.

The last known fatal China Airlines accident was in 1999 when a jetliner flipped over and burst into flames during a crash landing in Hong Kong, killing three people.

According to the aviation safety website, Airsafe.com, China Airlines has had nine fatal accidents since 1970.

    Security Guard Saves the Day

(IsraelNN.com) An alert security guard at the Barbie Club in southern Tel Aviv saved many lives earlier tonight by opening fire at the bomber's vehicle.

The security guard at the nightclub located on Kibbutz Galuyot Street, at the corner of Herzl Street, spotted the terrorist's vehicle and opened fire, leading to the explosion. Police report one body on the scene, presumably that of the bomber.

Magen David Adom emergency medical service officials report two persons were transported from the scene to Ichilov Hospital, one listed as light-to-moderate and the second being treated for hysteria.

The area remains closed at this time while police continue searching.

Fire destroys Israeli Embassy in Paris

PARIS, May 23, 2002 (AP WorldStream via COMTEX) --

A fire erupted at the Israeli Embassy in Paris early Thursday morning, destroying the unoccupied building, French officials said. There were no immediate indication the blaze was caused by arson or an attack.

The fire broke out at 2:20 a.m. local time (0020 GMT) in the five-story embassy that was recently undergoing renovation, police and firefighters said. Eight firefighters were slightly injured battling the blaze, which was virtually extinguished by 6:00 a.m. (0400 GMT).

Prosecutors, judicial police and forensic experts were at the scene gathering evidence, according to Paris Police Chief Jean-Paul Proust. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but he said four of the building's five floors were in ruins, charred beyond repair. Before the fire was brought under control, flames could be seen shooting through the upper-floor windows as the blaze advanced unhindered from floor to floor.

"The embassy was completely destroyed," he said.

About 150 firefighters and dozens of fire vehicles were at the scene, as was Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe and Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin.

"Everything that concerns Israel is serious in the period we are now in. We're aware of that and we stand together," Raffarin told LCI television.

Israeli Ambassador Elie Barnavi said security guards immediately alerted authorities, and firefighters were on the scene within minutes. But the flames spread so rapidly that the building - an old structure with wooden floors - could not be saved, he said.

"It's tragic, tens of years of work disappearing under our eyes," Barnavi said. "But it is a consolation that there were no casualties."

Barnavi added that diplomats from Israel's Foreign Ministry were headed to Paris on Thursday, but that the investigation would be handled by French police.

Access to the scene was completely blocked by police vehicles. Acrid smoke could be smelled in the surrounding area. The embassy is in an exclusive neighborhood of Paris, just blocks away from the fashionable Champs-Elysees and elegant French presidential palace.

French President Jacques Chirac telephoned Barnavi and assured the Israeli diplomat that everything would be done to determine the cause of the fire.

Fire Capt. Laurent Vibert said smoke billowed out the building shortly after the blaze erupted, a possible indication the fire was electrical in origin. He added that no explosion was heard before the blaze broke out.

"No indication leads us to believe it was an attack," he said.

Synagogues and other Jewish institutions have been targeted by attacks in France for over a year, violence that has coincided with an escalation in the Middle East conflict. In the most serious case, a synagogue in the southern city of Marseille was burned to the ground on March 31.

Dozens of evacuated residents who live in apartment buildings adjoining the embassy began returning home after dawn. The neighboring structures were not damaged, partly because of the thickness of stone walls that separate them from the embassy.
