So I get a call this morning from a polling company. (I like getting these political survey calls; I like making the callers laugh.) The questions all concerned the possible special election for Kay-Baby's Senate seat, which she swears she will vacate (I have my doubts). Although the poller asked about many candidates, the questions all seemed to center around Democrat John Sharp. The list of possible candidates running against Sharp included: David DewhurstDan PatrickFlorence ShapiroRoger WilliamsMichael WilliamsElizabeth Somebody Somebody; andDebra Medina There were three or four others, whose names I didn't recognize. The poller asked who I would vote...

Eva Rutland wrote her name in a careful scrawl on the first page of her memoir, "When We Were Colored: A Mother's Story," and included an endearment for her old friend Ruth Hill Thompson. Rutland, who is blind, could be forgiven the poor penmanship. When Thompson quickly checked the signature, as if to verify its authenticity, Rutland protested: "I can write my name!" And a great deal more. The 90-year-old graduate of Spelman College, who joined the 70th reunion of the class of 1937 (the most senior alumna to attend this year's graduation ceremonies), pursued a part-time career as a...

Local ABC television affiliate KVUE-TV news led off tonight with a breaking report of a "suspicious white powder" found on a sorting machine at the main post office here in Austin, Texas. (This is the post office on Cross Creek, not the one downtown.) The powder was found around 8:15pm local time. The post office has been evacuated, first responders are on the scene, and the postal inspectors are on their way. Preliminary tests have come back positive for a protein in the powder. More when I hear more ...

EST PRESIDENT BUSH: I'm proud to welcome President Obasanjo back to the White House. We just had a very good visit. We discussed our mutual concern, our mutual desire. And that is to fight and win the war against terror. The President has been a steadfast friend of the United States government and the United States people, before and after September 11th, and for that we're most grateful. He has got a huge Muslim population in ...

Two Thousand One, Nine Eleven Two thousand one, nine eleven. Five thousand plus arrive in heaven As they pass through the gate, Thousands more appear in wait. A bearded man with stovepipe hat Steps forward saying, "Let's sit, let's chat." They settle down in seats of clouds. A man named Martin shouts out proud, "I have a dream!" and once he did The Newcomers said, "Your dream still lives." Groups of soldiers in blue and gray Others in khaki and green then say, "We're from Bull Run, Yorktown, the Maine!" The Newcomers said, "You died not in vain." From ...

Gentlebeings: (Bear with me ... it's actually my first post ...) I've been reading and watching (and crying), but I haven't seen (m)any still pictures of the dogs working Ground Zero. I'd like to start a thread of these wonderful heroes, if one doesn't already exist.
