Hello everybody! For my final grade of the academic year, I have been assigned a presentation on media bias in America. Some of my thoughts on the matter are: What purpose does it serve? Who controls it? Modern day examples? How does the media portray aggressors/victims? What influence does it really have on us, the viewing public? I realize that I am using you guys as a crutch, but I know that you're a smart group who is generally willing to help. Do you have any suggestions, any thoughts, any examples? Thanks a lot, RedBeaconNY

Alright, I know most of you guys hate it when people like me do stuff like this, but... I'm preparing a debate for my AP American History class this upcoming Thursday. The topic is: Did we drop the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to save American lives, or to intimidate the Soviets? My side of the argument is that it was indeed to save American lives. FreeRepublic has been a great resource again and again for me, and I was wondering if you had any good sources (or opinions) on the matter. I appreciate your help!

Hello everybody. I am looking to write an essay for a Cornell scholarship competition. The general theme of the essay is: "'People who stay in the middle of the road get run over' and 'The hottest place in hell is for those who remain neutral in times of moral crises.'" I am looking to write a paper on the evils of appeasement, using Neville Chamberlain and our modern RINOs as prime examples. One recent example is the confirmation battle of Samuel Alito. If any of you have any particularly irksome complaints where the Republicans have been completely spineless (or anybody...

Picture this: So I'm in French class reading an article on the jobs of interpreters in the UN- the two being discussed were a) translating live dialogue in session and b) translating a written speech. After reading the thing, my teacher had five questions for us to write out answers to, four of which were comprehension questions. The fifth one was a bit of a critical thinking question. After a few minutes, she decides to go through the questions as a class. The first four come and go pretty easily, and then she asks the fifth one. Bear in mind...

Michael Savage mentioned a new addition to his website today, called "Know Your Enemy". What it is, is a collection of extremely graphic videos of various terrorist murders, including that of: Nick Berg, Paul Johnson and many other hostages. These are not edited in any way. He suggests you watch them; I tried to, but find the brutality of it all overwhelming. You can find this video collection halfway down his site page on the left hand side. Reactions? Post them here. This is what our enemies are capable of.

Today, I received a letter in the mail from an unfamiliar group, the CENTRA Financial Group, Inc. It came in your standard-size business envelope, with an official looking return address, etc. CENTRA is based out of Rochester, NY. Normally, I would read it, junk it and go on with my life, but there's something special about this letter. It has a handful of seed-like granules of some sort inside. I don't know what they are, as I have not opened the package. This is not exactly the most comfortable situation to be in. Did anybody, or has anybody received a...

(2005-06-27) -- In a pair of rulings on the constitutionality of the 10 Commandments on government property, the Supreme Court today said the commandments may be displayed on public land if that property has been seized from private owners for 'public purposes' under eminent domain. The 5-4 decision comes on the heels of last week's court declaration that so-called "private" property is actually government land temporarily under private management until its eventual seizure. In a second ruling handed down today, the Supreme Court banned the 10 commandments from appearing in courtrooms unless the following disclaimer is included: "Display of this...

Alright, you've gotta like orange juice. But how do you like it? Lotsa pulp, no pulp, somewhere in between? Why?

Same-Sex Marriage: The Battle of our Time Same-sex marriage can only be described as a volatile issue in today’s American society. It has sparked heartfelt national debate. Emotions everywhere are flaring. Politicians and pundits, organizations and students- all strive to make their voices heard. And they are heard loud and clear. The citizens of the United States of America stand on two sides of a chasm over the issue of same-sex marriage. Little factual information exists to support or refute the legalization of gay marriage, but opinions abound. There are those who vehemently oppose the idea, arguing that it erodes...

Hey FReepers- I am a sophomore in high school. For English class, I have to write a debatable paper, and I have chosen to write on the various negative effects of homosexuality and the homosexual movement on American society. I was wondering if you could direct me towards some credible sources on the subject- including a list of laws passed for/against homosexuality, opinions, stats, etc. Your opinions are welcome too- all's fair in an opinionative paper ;) Thank.

Hey, I'm new to the FReeping world, and I'm slightly baffled by some of the unique things to FreeRepublic. What the heck is a ZOT? Who are the viking kitties? Can somebody fill me in on the trolls, the BTTT's, etc? Thanks.
