  • Barone: Going out on a limb: Romney beats Obama, handily (315 to 223)

This from an article on Ryan campaigning CO:

As for early voting in the state, the Colorado Secretary of State's office reports that over 1.3 million ballots have already been cast here. Of those, 457,337 are Democrats, 493, 457 are Republicans and 341,920 are from voters registered as "unaffiliated." The number of ballots cast so far is already more than half, 53.9 percent, of the total votes cast in 2008.

That means that Republicans are outnumbering Democrats by more than 3% in early voting and will probably outnumber them even more on Tuesday. And yet CO is a swing state? I wonder what the pollsters sampling numbers are for CO. I'd say CO is a lock from Romney but more importantly why are the pollsters counting it a battleground state? This really calls into question the sampling.

We should definitely send a clear message to these spineless sponsors, and we should also send a positive message by supporting the sponsors who did not cave in.

In one way we do owe Fluke an apology for letting our culture keep sliding towards Gomorrah (as Robert Bork put it). That’s a sin of omission for which I must atone. Women have been brainwashed into believing that there’s no difference between the sexes and therefore if a man can hook-up “consequence free” so to speak, a woman should also be able to enjoy that so-called freedom. Of course it’s a big lie, but you have to feel sympathy for the likes of Fluke just as Christ had compassion for the prostitute facing stoning. What’s rarely mentioned is Christ’s last words to her - “go and sin no more”.

I agree that some of RS’s positions are somewhat unpalatable with the general population but unfortunately it will be very hard for Gingrich to undo the negatives that have built up over many years. Again, let me re-emphasize that if he’s the pick, I’ll support him. I’m more anti-Obama than pro-GOP. But I would just hope that everyone would support Romney if he’s the pick. I’ve heard time and again that he’s no better than Obama. Baloney! “The enemy of better is best”.

I am an “anybody but Newt” guy, but if Newt wins the nomination, I will support him 100%. 2012 has to be about beating Obama. I think that Gingrich’s negatives are just too high to beat Obama. As for Santorum being part of the Romney gameplan, I doubt it. I actually think Santorum has a chance of winning. At some point, social conservatives have to realize that Gingrich can’t do it and the only alternative is Santorum. Don’t Republicans still believe that character matters.

It won’t matter. GA is not a swing state - solid red. Too bad we can’t contest his eligibility in Florida which could possibly be a swing state.

If Romney wins, I will hold my nose and start counting the reasons I love him. Because next to Obama he’s a an ultra-conservative.

I don’t know Greek (perhaps you do) but if it’s anything like Latin, the same noun can take six different forms. For example, God is “Deus” in the nominative case, but in the genitive case it’s “Dei” as in Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) but still means the same. So I’m unconvinced - are you sure that that petros and petra are from different roots? Any Greek scholars out there? I’m just asking - not a rhetorical question.

Good post although we RC’s have to be careful. Take a look at the Fr. Corapi controversy. Have said that, at least Fr. Corapi had to submit to the authority of the Church. To whom does Osteen or Swaggart submit?

You’re right. I in no way meant that salvation depends on certain Marian dogmas. Nor do I believe that today’s Catholics believe that except for a few pre-Vatican II holdouts (Mel Gibson comes to mind). Hope you took no offense at my postings - none was meant.

Where in my post did I imply that Mary’s perpetual virginity had anything to do with salvation? You read way too much into my post.

BTW, I’d be interested in knowing of any Protestant leader who’s comfortable that dogma.

Good point. Mary is venerated not worshipped. There’s a difference. BTW, I have heard that both Luther and Calvin believed in Mary’s perpetual virginity which would be anathema to modern day protestants. Certainly Luther had great reverence for Mary.

Yup. How else to explain Ron Paul’s showing. Imagine if Romney or Santorum were 75 years old like RP. Wouldn’t someone be pointing that out? Though his age is the least of my problems with RP, it’s interesting to note that I’ve never once heard the MSM mention that. I think they love the mischief he’s doing to the GOP. Amazing the support he has among the young. I have to admit I do agree with him on some things, but...

Great post! Open primaries are horrible.
Gingrich should drop out and endorse Santorum. Newt has proved his critics right, he hasn’t the right temperament for POTUS. He’s a a great thinker but that doesn’t necessarilly translate into a great leader. His willingness to take out of context Romney’s remark about firing insurers was the last straw for me. Take note that Santorum never took the bait.

We Catholics do have the Holy Spirit. In fact the Holy Spirit guided us as we canonized the scriptures and is still guiding us (and Protestants). Somehow I find it hard to believe that nobody found Jesus until after the Reformation. Praise Jesus that I found him in the Lutheran Church and haven’t lost him despite being received into the Catholic Church.

Good point. It reminds me of quote by Bishop Fulton Sheen. “There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be.”

I recommend that readers on this thread go see "Lost City" (if you haven't already). My wife and I went with my Cuban in-laws and they thought it was quite accurate. Finally a movie that shows Che for the cold-blooded executioner that he was. Koodoos to Andy Garcia for having the guts to produce such a un-PC movie.

My wife was born in Cuba but luckily her family escaped when she was an infant. We're always amazed at how ignorant people are about the conditions in Cuba. I'm not sure but I think that they still ration electricity as well as many other things that advanced societies consider necessities. It's also interesting that before Castro, Cuba was considered the most advanced of Latin American countries.

    The miracles of Communism.

I was planning to boycott Target but I may reconsider after some of the things you've pointed out.

But don't be too hard on those who plan to boycott Target. Many of us are so tired of PC mgmt decisions that always give in to the grinches such as the ACLU. But what can you expect from a Mpls-based company. My employer is headquartered in Mpls and they just keep going more PC all the time. Can't call Christmas "Christmas". It has to be winter holiday. Why can't a private business do what they darn well please?

Anyway God bless you and have a Merry Christmas.

I hope you meant sarcastic in your last sentence.

Definitely. What amazes me is his lack of humility. At least as I understand humility. It seems like this man takes himself entirely too seriously. What a contrast between him and Reagan.
