Just because you can't fight city hall doesn't mean City Hall can't fight you. Tuesday night, Mayor Rocky Anderson got into a heated exchange with Dell Loy Hansen, one of Utah's biggest developers. Now, 24 hours after their fight, Hansen feels like he's getting a "bum" rap. Tuesday night began after a meeting at City Hall, one where the mayor and Hansen did not make nice. According to the Mayor, Hansen confronted him in a hallway. And, again according to the Mayor, Hansen then put his arm on Anderson to which the mayor said: Rocky Anderson: "I said I...

Try this experiment.   Put a bird feeder in your yard and fill it with bird seed. It doesn't take long before the birds learn that a free meal is in the Offing. They come by the hundreds.   Now, empty the feeder. What happens? No more birds. Take away the free medical care. Take away the free schooling. Take away the free welfare. Take away the jobs. What happens? No more illegals.      WOW!! What a simple solution!   No need for a border fence at the cost of hundreds of millions of tax Dollars.   Do you think this could work? Let's...

Proposed Internet TaxesProspective legislation for mandatory out-of-state sales taxes could impact your trading on eBay by requiring you to collect and remit sales tax on all items sold outside your home state. Last year, eBay sellers helped fight for "Net Neutrality," but the newly elected Congress brings new challenges.   Streamlined Sales Tax Project eBay opposes raising taxes on the Internet or its uses, as well as any attempt to impose remote sales tax collection burdens on the smallest sellers who can least afford it. This is certainly not the time to impose a major new tax burden...

Security to the Max I had to go to the Tooele Army Depot to get a new ID card. My friend, the Bishop graciously volunteered to drive me (I don’t drive due to an eye problem). We go in the unmanned gate and go down the road a little way, only to face a maze of concrete barriers. Arrows pointing this way and that way, saying “Trucks to right, cars to left” and a bunch of stop signs. The Bishop stops at a stop sign, turns off his pickup truck engine, jumps out and starts looking under his seat. At...

Two Parties Vie for Bankrupt USDTV Assets (cable and satellite wins again) At least two broadcast-related interests are negotiating to secure the assets of USDTV, the two-year old innovative "wireless cable" firm propelled by local broadcasters that filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection on July 6 in Delaware (Petition 06-10701-BLS). USDTV CEO Steve Lindsley said the maverick start-up, which sought to provide a modest, terrestrially delivered DTV service for $20 monthly, had gleaned a total of about 16,000 subscribers in its four initial markets: Dallas-Ft. Worth, Albuquerque, Las Vegas, and Salt Lake City (its based of operations). (rest...

You all can welcome me to the 21st century. Actually, I guess, the 20th century, I'll explain in a minute. Since 1988, I have resisted getting a cell phone. To me, phones are the most intrusive devices known to man. And cell phones are incredibly intrusive. Imagine this: you are in somebody’s office doing business when the door is opened, and a person says "What are you doing for lunch...man have I had a bad day.... yatta....yatta....yatta". If it were me, I would throw that person out of my office so quick, their head would spin. But, let the phone...

Am I the only person bothered by the Mardi Gras? The rest of the country is spending billions of $$$ on Katrina recovery, and New Orleans is partying. Fox news said this afternoon that overtime for the NOPD will run 2.5 million $$ alone. I mean things are tough, it is tax time, and we have to cough up hard earned money, while NO acts like a buck sponge.

Justice in FairbanksMany years ago, I was arrested in Fairbanks, AK., for buying a resident fishing license when I was in fact a non-resident. In my defense, I was 10 day short of being a resident (one year), and I decided to go to court and tell the judge. Yes, they are that serious about their fishing laws in Alaska.I got there early, front row seat, and what a circus it was.Fairbanks, during the pipeline boom was a small town gone wild. There were shooting in the streets, prostitutes galore, and general lawlessness. It was a modern version of Dodge...

On My Way to Viet Nam Memories of that day. 5 Jan 1969 I kiss my wife and kids good bye and board the plane in the El Paso Airport, heading to San Francisco, eventually to Viet Nam. There were a few other GI on board, since El Paso has Ft. Bliss Texas and White Sands Missile Range close to it. I get off the plane and , walking down the concourse spot a blinking sign “COLD BEER”. Although it is only 11 am that sounded awfully good to me. After all, I’m heading to Viet Nam. Belly up to...
