"Bush heard plenty, however, during more than an hour of meetings aboard his plane with state and local politicians about why it is taking so long to relieve the misery of so many people in New Orleans who have been living in squalor without the necessities of life. "He heard some things he didn't want to believe at first," said Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La. "The president is starting to grasp the magnitude of the situation." Four days after Katrina killed hundreds if not thousands, Republicans joined Democrats in shaking their heads. "If we can't respond faster than this to an...

I just received this email regarding a "protest" scheduled for tomorrow, April 1. A few thoughts: KBR has held open house recruiting events at the location listed below for months, yet these maggot-intested types are just now catching on to this fact. Anyways, I just want to be left alone tomorrow so I can, you know, get to work and do my job. I know some of you have extensive FReep experience, so any pointers on how to best avoid dealing with these freaks-- notifying security should I spy them doing something suspicious, etc.--would be appreciated. Thoughts and comments are...

Rep. Bill Thomas of California, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, is the ultimate legislative poker player who keeps his hand shielded even from partners. But he showed a few cards during the recent Republican retreat at the Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. His fellow Republican congressmen were astounded.

*snip*"...Philadelphia magazine reports: "Heinz accused Kerry's opponents - 'our enemies' - of making the race dirty. 'We didn't start out with negative ads calling George Bush a cokehead,' he said, before adding, 'I'll do it now.' *snip* "..."One of the things I've noticed is the Israel lobby - the treatment of Israel as the 51st state, sort of a swing state."

I haven't noticed it before, and apologies if this is already common knowledge here.

"SOURCES: VP Cheney Predicts on NBC NEWS TODAY SHOW Monday Election Results Will Be 52% Bush, 47% Kerry.."Title is all that appears on DR.com at this time. This must be taken out of context or something. Why on earth would Dick Cheney--with his stupid, frankly, prediction of a comfortable victory some 9 days prior to the election-- go out of his way to suppress GOP turnout, which is 100% what his comments, if true, would do to some extent. Has he forgotten the week prior to Election Day 2000 or something?

Time running out on 9/11 reforms October 24, 2004 BY ROBERT NOVAK SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST Congressional leaders must agree on details of the independent 9/11 commission recommendations by Tuesday in order to pass an intelligence reform bill before the election and avert a late Democratic attack. John Kerry's campaign has angry families of 9/11 victims poised to blast George W. Bush for not acting promptly on the commission's recommendations. Republican strategists fear a damaging 11th-hour Democratic attack. At last week's Senate-House conference seeking a final version of the bill, the leading House Democratic negotiator -- Rep. Jane Harman of California --...

In the wake of CBS News' "60 Minutes" controversy, an influential Republican on Tuesday said he wants to convene a Capitol Hill hearing on TV news operations after the Nov. 2 election. Rep. Joe Barton (news, bio, voting record) (R-Texas), chair of the House Commerce Committee, told a meeting of the TV engineering trade group MSTV in Washington that broadcast network news divisions "need to have safeguards to prevent reporters from infusing their opinions into news reports." The lawmaker said he wanted to hear from execs of all the nets -- not just CBS -- and threatened to introduce legislation...

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration said Thursday it is weighing a request from several U.S. refiners to borrow crude oil from the nation's emergency stockpile to help offset supply disruptions along the Gulf Coast from Hurricane Ivan. AP Photo "Certainly Hurricane Ivan had an effect on the supply of oil imports and production in the Gulf of Mexico," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan. "It has limited some refiners' access to crude oil supplies." He said that the Department of Energy (news - web sites) was reviewing the requests. In the past, President Bush (news - web sites) has resisted...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites)'s call for a simpler tax code could mark the next step in a gradual move toward a system that places more of a tax burden on consumption and less on savings, analysts say, a direction critics think would put a bigger burden on working Americans. In his speech to the Republican convention two weeks ago, Bush said he would launch a bipartisan tax reform effort if he wins a second term but offered little direction to those who may wonder what types of changes he envisions. "The American people deserve --...

LOL! I was just watching the end of the New England-Indianapolis game, right after Edgerrin James had fumbled away Indy's chance to win. Anyways, John Madden was going on about something or other and he ended a sentence by saying "...a flip-flop." Al Michaels, obviously debating whether or not he should say what he was thinking on air, waited a beat then said, "Well, we're sure in the right (correct) state for THAT!" or something similar. Go Al! Seriously, he's the best play by play guy in the biz.

Democratic Dirty Tricks Escalate Democratic Lawyers Send Letters to Nader Oregon Petitioners Threatening Incarceration and $100,000 Fines Washington, DC: Independent Presidential Candidate Ralph Nader today sharply criticized lawyers working in coalition with the Democratic Party, for threatening Nader/Camejo signature gatherers in Oregon. “This is an escalation of the dirty tricks of the Democrats. Threatening signature gatherers with a felony, five years in jail, or a $100,000 fine is a direct attack on the right to petition protected by the Constitution,” said Nader. “The Democrats are showing they have no respect for democracy and will do anything to keep Nader/Camejo off...

Clinic Director Accused of Abortion Sham (Mon, Jun/07/2004) NEW ORLEANS - A purported anti-abortion activist was accused in a lawsuit Monday of running a sham abortion clinic that dupes women into waiting too long to have abortions. The federal complaint, filed by the Center for Reproductive Rights on behalf of five plaintiffs, accuses William A. Graham of running the Causeway Center for Women as a way to prevent abortions. The lawsuit accuses Graham of pretending to refer women to abortion providers at bargain prices, then telling them their appointments have been postponed. Louisiana law allows abortions only during the first...

Tax-reform agenda could be just the jolt Bush needs August 12, 2004 BY ROBERT NOVAK SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST The fragile morale of Republicans took a battering when the Labor Department reported only 32,000 new jobs were created in July. Democrats immediately crowed that unhappy days were here again, but the real political problem for President Bush may be his reliance on the vagaries of government statisticians to give his re-election campaign a boost. In the opinion of economists I consulted, the 32,000-job figure reflects less the real state of the economy than faults of methodology in the Labor Department's Bureau of...

Edwards Campaign Worker Arrested An Edwards Campaign worker has been charged by Baton Rouge Police. BRPD charged 33-year- old Tanya Leigh Flores of Alexandria, Va with resisting a police officer, disobeying a police officer, and issued her several parking violations. Police say Flores drove her van into an area reserved for police and news media to unload campaign materials. They say they attempted to get Ms. Flores to move to a different area to unload and she refused numerous times. Then they tell us a Secret Service agent was summoned who, again, asked Ms Flores to move her van, and...

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Ben Affleck is barnstorming with Sen. John F. Kerry [related, bio] this week, but perhaps the Bay State senator could return the favor next year. The movie star told the Herald yesterday he has an interest in politics but deflected questions about whether he would run for the Senate if Kerry leaves an open seat by winning the White House. Saying he's focused on a Kerry victory Nov. 2, Affleck said, ``I'm not thinking past that.'' But the actor obviously has been paying attention to the potential race. He noted that likely candidate U.S. Rep. Martin T....

How's this for a lead-in for this article, in light of today's news:"ONTARIO, Calif., Feb. 24 — When John Kerry was asked to list his closest foreign policy advisers the other day, he served up two names: Richard C. Holbrooke and Samuel R. Berger, veterans of Bill Clinton's presidency. When John Edwards, Mr. Kerry's main opponent in the Democratic presidential nomination battle, was asked the same question in a separate interview this week with reporters and editors of The New York Times, he also served up two names: Mr. Holbrooke and Mr. Berger.
