For non-pilots, these controllers are in Nevada and are each flying a drone thousands of miles away in the combat zone in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their left hand is on the throttle controlling the drone's engine. Note all the buttons which perform various tasks without removing the hand from the throttle. The right hand is flying the plane. Kill a Taliban leader then go home for dinner! Welcome to the new world. This is modern warfare. Missiles fired from Nevada controlled drone aircraft kill Taliban leader. Watch how it's done. • Urine Test (vanity)

I have a job. I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes & the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to get that paycheck, in my case, I am required to pass a random urine test (of which I have no problem) What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test. So, here is my question: Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them? Please...

Studs Terkel: We're seated here, two old gaffers. Me and Paul Tibbets, 89 years old, brigadier-general retired, in his home town of Columbus, Ohio, where he has lived for many years. Paul Tibbets: Hey, you've got to correct that. I'm only 87. You said 89. Studs Terkel: I know. See, I'm 90. So I got you beat by three years. Studs Terkel: Now we've had a nice lunch, you and I and your companion. I noticed as we sat in that restaurant, people passed by. They didn't know who you were. But once upon a time, you flew a plane...
  • How Mister Rogers made me a rock 'n' roll dad

Mister Rogers summered in a modest, gray, shake-shingled house on the edge of Nantucket. My mother rented a tiny cottage next door. So Mister Rogers really was my neighbor. I first met Mister Rogers on Sept. 4, 2001 -- my thirtieth birthday. I was a bit lost at the time. My parent's divorce and chronic relocation left me a serial monogamist (but commitment phobe) hooked on rock ’n’ roll fantasy. Everything would be fine, I reasoned, if I could get famous for expressing my dysfunction; it seemed to work for everyone in Rolling Stone magazine and on MTV. So I'd...

  • Tomorrow, Fly the Flag and Remember (vanity)

I know I am preaching to the choir but if you have a flag fly it proudly and remember the innocent lives of those taken on 9/11/2001.... If you are one to pray please pray for those who have served and are serving in our military. I also ask, that in your prayers pray for the leaders of this country. These leaders may not have been of our choosing but only God can turn their hearts. I know there are some on this site who don't believe as some of us do in God. As a Christian mom of two...

Let's put all the senior citizens in jail, and the criminals in a nursing home. This way the seniors would have access to showers, hobbies, and walks, they'd receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical treatment, wheel chairs etc. and they'd receive money instead of paying it out. They would have constant video monitoring, so they could be helped instantly, if they fell, or needed assistance. Bedding would be washed twice a week, and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them. A guard would check on them every 20 minutes, and bring their meals and snacks to their cell....

50 Things a Man Should Be Able To Do Friday, July 23, 2010, 8:00 AM Joe Carter [Note: Every Friday on First Thoughts we host a discussion about some aspect of pop culture. Today’s theme is "Renaissance Man" lists. Have a suggestion for a topic? Send them to me at jcarter@firstthings.com.] Every man does not need to know how to tie a bow tie. Let’s get that clear up front. I don’t know why it is on every “Things a Man Should Know How to Do” list but it’s simply not true. If you have a reason to wear a...
  • Elton John's choice words for boycotting musicians (Arizona)

    Arizona Daily Star ^ | July 23, 2010 | Cathalena E. Burch
Elton John didn't mince words in slamming his fellow musicians for boycotting Arizona over the controversial SB 1070 immigration law. From the stage at his sold-out Tucson Arena concert Thursday night, John savored a few choice, not-so-family-friendly words: "We are all very pleased to be playing in Arizona. I have read that some of the artists won't come here. They are (expletive)wits! Let's face it: I still play in California, and as a gay man I have no legal rights whatsoever. So what's the (expletive) with these people?" John has never been one to cave into political pressure from his...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Richard G. Lugar, Indiana Republican, said Wednesday he'll vote to confirm Elena Kagan as a Supreme Court justice. Mr. Lugar is the second in the GOP to announce he's breaking with his party to back President Obama's nominee to succeed retiring Justice John Paul Stevens. Mr. Lugar said he carefully followed Ms. Kagan's confirmation hearing testimony and the debate about her nomination, including recommendations from his constituents, and concluded that she clearly is qualified to serve on the high court.
  • Difference Between Democrats and Republicans

If a Republican doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one. If a Democrat doesn’t like guns, he wants all guns outlawed. If a Republican is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat. If a Democrat is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone. If a Republican is homosexual, he quietly leads his life. If a Democrat is homosexual, he demands legislated respect. If a Republican is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A Democrat wonders who is going to take care of him. If a Republican doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels....

My Resignation I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of an 8 year-old again. I want to go to McDonald's and think that it's a four star restaurant. I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make a sidewalk with rocks. I want to think M&Ms are better than money because you can eat them. I want to lie under a big oak tree and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer's day. I want to return to a time...

I was sitting in Church-Lady Helen’s living room. Someone commented on the illegal immigration problem. I said, “For some strange reason our government doesn’t know that illegal immigration is illegal.” Pious Helen stuck her nose in the air and proudly declared, “I never discuss politics.” I felt like I’d just been punched in the face. Is it a sin to watch the news? Maybe it’s okay to watch it, but not to talk about it. I was sitting in the pew of my old church, sucking on a Coffee Nip, 30 calories, and mentally calculating my caloric intake of the...
