"We believe in the Bible alone and the Bible in its entirety as the sole rule of faith for the Christian!" You may have heard these words or something very similar to them from a Fundamentalist or Evangelical Protestant. They are, in essence, the meaning of the doctrine of Sola Scriptura, or "Scripture alone," which alleges that the Bible – as interpreted by the individual believer – is the only source of religious authority and is the Christian’s sole rule of faith or criterion regarding what is to be believed. By this doctrine, which is one of the foundational beliefs...

TIME magazine is downplaying the motu proprio as expected at least by me. They are saying the group wanting this will get smaller and smaller and that the Popes letter was mainly for the over 50 crowd. Typical. Here is a blurb: Why it may not be as big a deal as it seems In practical terms, the vast majority of Catholics — even among the most traditionalist — are unlikely to relinquish the vernacular Mass. The number of priests who have the language skills or liturgical training for the old Latin Mass is small, and likely to get smaller....

Latin Mass Not Going to Happen Papal insider says Pope won’t do it Fr. Reginald Foster, a Carmelite friar and the Latin master for the Vatican, says reports that Pope Benedict will reintroduce the Tridentine Mass, were wrong. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (no word if he’s chums with Cream City’s former ordinary Bishop (ugh) Rembert Weakhand), Fr. Foster was appointed the Papal Latinist 38 years ago by Pope Paul VI. He said the Pope won’t do it, not least because of the Pope's desire to avoid more controversies. A speech last year offended Muslims and more recently he gave...

Rome, Dec. 13, 2006 (CWNews.com) - Italy’s National Alliance party is leading a petition drive among Catholics in the Liguria region, asking the bishops there to allow at least one Sunday Mass each week celebrated in the Tridentine rite. The National Alliance, concerned about the steady influx of immigrants from South America and Eastern Europe into Liguria, argues that the use of the 1962 Missal would be an effective way to help integrate the new residents into the region’s traditional culture. Formed by an alliance of the Italian Social Movement with members of the defunct Christian Democrat party, the center-right...

Controversy over statueBy REGINA MEDINA medinar@phillynews.com 215-854-5985 A SCULPTURE OF the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus, proposed as a "memorial for the victims of abortion" at Villanova University, has upset some students, including some who oppose abortion. Villanovans for Life, which spearheaded the monument effort, says the statue "will memorialize those who have died as a result of legalized abortion and all those who suffer physically, emotionally, and/or spiritually due to abortion," according to the group's Web site. The school's board of trustees is expected to approve the monument at its meeting tomorrow. The objections range from the monument's proposed...

For 2,000 years, the Catholic Church has ordained only men to the ministerial priesthood, and many have accused this teaching of being an archaic, anti-feminine remnant of a patriarchal society. But are these claims true? Should women be allowed to be priests? In this essay we will look at the theological reasons why the Church not only does not but also cannot validly ordain women. There are several reasons why the Church doesn’t allow women to be priests, but I think they can be summed up in four main points: Jesus didn’t choose female Apostles, the Apostles followed in Jesus’...
