Challenger Joe Kent has nearly overtaken U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler in vote counts released Friday, leaving the six-term incumbent teetering on the brink of defeat amid Republican backlash over her vote to impeach former President Donald Trump. But Kent, her Trump-endorsed Republican challenger, has surged in later tallies, cutting deeply into Herrera Beutler’s lead and threatening to push her into third place. Kent has gained ground every day, in a trend line that points to him surpassing Herrera Beutler when more votes are counted next week. Herrera Beutler “needs a miracle,” wrote Dave Wasserman, an editor and election expert...

Shortly after Christmas 1994, 11-year-old Amber Doggett and her little sister were brought to the police station in Wenatchee, Washington, to answer some questions. The girls were separated and, later, in an interrogation room, a detective asked Doggett if her parents had ever sexually abused her. They hadn’t, she said. Yes, they had, the detective insisted. He said he knew that because Doggett’s three older siblings had already said so, and had described the abuse in detail to police. He said it stood to reason that Doggett couldn’t see this clearly, as she’d been brainwashed. None of this was true....

I just got word of the death of Arnold, a (black) high school classmate of many decades ago. For some reason, my memories of him also brings up memories of another black classmate, Bryant. Arnold had a huge personality that found pleasure and humor no matter the circumstances. He was the type of person that would approach a stranger, struck up a conversation and walk away with an instant friend. I was shocked that he remembered a conversation we had many, many decades ago. Life was hard on him, in a recent photo, he looked decades older than his age....

A Central Point father of four who wished President Joe Biden and the first lady a wonderful Christmas and added “Let’s go, Brandon,” at the end of a live streamed Santa tracker call told The Oregonian/OregonLive that he didn’t intend his parting message to be vulgar. “At the end of the day, I have nothing against Mr. Biden, but I am frustrated because I think he can be doing a better job,” said Jared Schmeck, 35, who works for an electric company and was previously a Medford police officer for six years until he resigned in July 2018. “I mean...

HELENA, Mont. — One Montana hospital went into lockdown and called police after a woman threatened violence because her relative was denied her request to be treated with ivermectin. Officials of another Montana hospital accused public officials of threatening and harassing their health care workers for refusing to treat a politically connected covid-19 patient with that antiparasitic drug or hydroxychloroquine, another drug unauthorized by the Food and Drug Administration to treat covid. And in neighboring Idaho, a medical resident said police had to be called to a hospital after a covid patient’s relative verbally abused her and threatened physical violence...

Imagine you’re a normal person. The year is 2016. Rightly or wrongly, you believe most of what you see in the media. You believe polls are broadly reflective of public opinion. You believe doctors and scientists are trustworthy and independent. You’re a decent, reasonable person who follows the rules and trusts the authorities. Imagine your shock, then, when Brexit, which you were assured couldn’t happen because it was a fringe movement led by racists for racists, happens. The polls, which widely predicted it wouldn’t happen, were wrong. The experts and pundits who told you day after day that it wouldn’t...

Andrew Cuomo was sworn in as governor of New York in 2011 and announced August 10, 2021 that he would resign from office in 14 days following multiple allegations of sexual harassment, according to NBC News. A Bend Police Department officer will be investigated for allegedly violating policy by wearing a keychain connected to a far-right group while in uniform on Saturday. Bend Chief Mike Krantz did not identify the employee, though Cpl. Josh Spano is the officer seen in a photograph circulating on Reddit and Facebook. Attached to the front of Spano’s service vest is an item reading “molon labe” in Greek lettering, a phrase associated with the far-right Three Percenters militia. The “molon labe” item and its letters appear to be larger than Spano’s name tag on his vest. “I’m aware of the allegations...

An 11-year-old boy on Friday was able to hack into a replica of the Florida state election website and change voting results found there in under 10 minutes during the world’s largest yearly hacking convention, DEFCON 26, organizers of the event said. The boy, who was identified by DEFCON officials as Emmett Brewer, accessed a replica of the Florida secretary of state’s website. He was one of about 50 children between the ages of 8 and 16 who were taking part in the so-called “DEFCON Voting Machine Hacking Village,” a portion of which allowed kids the chance to manipulate party...

I recently discovered that Google and Facebook were two of the largest stock holdings in one of the mutual funds that I hold in retirement accounts. I sold that mutual fund and am looking for a "patriot" friendly mutual fund. Any recommendations?

I've been a loyal Republican for many decades. I've voted for Nixon through Trump (holding my nose for Romney and McCain). Unless the Republican leadership stands up and fights for Trump -- I'm finished. Let's do to the Republican Party what we did to Fox News! Although I have sympathy for libertarian ideas I couldn't join the Libertarian Party due to their stance on drug legalization. So, I'll become one of the much sought after independents.

As coronavirus cases surged in Oregon, county commissioners representing some of the most hard-hit areas in the state decided to travel -- two to Hawaii and one to Mexico. While two of the trips began before Gov. Kate Brown’s “freeze” travel advisory went into effect, the optics of taking these vacations while Brown was asking Oregonians to take all available precautions to stem the tide of the disease, is causing some county workers and members of the public to wonder about a double standard. KGW reported Monday that Multnomah County Commissioner Sharon Meieran called in to public meetings from her...

A Talent man has been charged with murder after police say he shot and killed a Black teenager in the parking lot of an Ashland hotel on Monday. The shooting has drawn condemnation from Southern Oregon’s Black community, which raised concerns about the area’s culture and history of white supremacy. The teen, whose name has not been publicly confirmed by police, has been widely identified on social media and in news reports as Aiden Ellison, 19. Another Ashland resident Robert Keegan, 47, has been charged with his murder. Keegan is facing four criminal counts, including second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, reckless...

Samson was a flawed candidate but God used him to accomplish the deliverance of Israel. Just think about it. You know the story. Although Samson was set apart unto God from birth as a Nazarite and was not supposed to cut his hair, drink wine, or touch any dead thing, he managed to violate all of these requirements during his lifetime. Yet God still used Samson as a judge and deliverer. He was supernaturally strong and could slay hundreds with nothing more in his hands than the jawbone of a donkey, and even his countrymen were afraid and skeptical of...

I have operated a small business for many decades. I'm tired -- and tired of all the paperwork, insurance, and taxes. I wouldn't mind cutting back to part time, but it doesn't seem like a financially viable option as my insurance costs and paperwork would likely not decrease. So, now the quandary -- what do I do with my time if I retire? I want do remain active and keep the mind busy. I don't want to sit and watch TV or spend all day on the internet. What do all you retirees do with your time?
