Take a front seat ride in the Apollo Lunar Module as it makes its historic descent and avoids a near catastrophe unfolding behind the scenes. Then travel back to a time before the Space Race, to the America of cowboys and Indians, to understand how all of America’s small steps led us to the one giant leap.

The 5-year-old Woodbury boy who survived being thrown from a third-floor balcony at the Mall of America remains in intensive care due to severe complications from the attack, his parents said in a Tuesday update on their GoFundMe page. “Up until now we have let our hopes govern what we have revealed to the public,” the post stated. “However, the injuries and severe complications have now resulted in more than 15 separate medical procedures or surgeries, including surgeries for two broken arms and a broken leg, removal of his spleen, procedures for fluid in his lungs and stomach, as well...
  • Need ideas for a Cub Scout meeting with veterans in November.

I'm the Cubmaster for a group of about 50 1st through 5th grade Cub Scouts. Close to Veteran's Day, I have set up a meeting at the local air museum where mostly military equipment and memorabilia are featured. I'd like the boys to understand what a veteran is and why we offer them respect. I know a couple vets (Vietnam and OIF, OEF campaigns) and I'd like them to talk to my scouts, but I have no idea what to ask them to talk about. If you are a vet, what would you like young boys to know about your...
  • Youth semi-auto shotgun for trap. Remington 11-87?

My son has joined his middle-school trap team and I'm shopping for a gun. Recommendations are for a semi-auto so as to reduce felt recoil and I would like him to have a 12 gauge so as not to handicap him with a 20. He takes hunter safety in a couple weeks and I also look forward to taking him hunting this year. The problem is that there aren't a lot of choices for new 12 gauge guns under a $750 budget. What I'd like to do is buy an 11-87 and replace the stock with an 870 youth stock...

COLD SPRING, Minn. — There was drama on the first two days of school in the Rocori school district. On Tuesday, students at Rocori High School — about 20 miles southwest of St. Cloud — were greeted by a new policy prohibiting flags and banners from being displayed on vehicles in the school parking lot. The controversial rule was bucked by students Wednesday, Sept. 7, with numerous American flags defiantly hanging from trucks that lined the lot. By the afternoon, students and school officials had come to an agreement that allows for the respectful display of the American flag. Julie...

WASHINGTON — NASA's chief scientist is leaving the agency after more than three years on the job, as NASA refreshes the leadership of its science programs. Ellen Stofan left NASA this month after serving as chief scientist since August 2013. Agency spokesman Dwayne Brown was not immediately able to provide an exact departure date, or plans to select a new chief scientist. Stofan's departure was noted by NASA publicly only in an interview the agency posted on its Tumblr social media account Dec. 21. In the interview, NASA said Stofan was "departing for new adventures," but was not more specific....

I am planning to fly into LAX this August with my daughter (7) and son (9) while Mom stays home with the other two. We are mainly going to spend an afternoon with my dad on the Iowa at his Navy reunion, but will have a day, day-and-a-half to do other things. I would definitely like to go to a beach as the kids have never seen the ocean. Some other attraction or park would be nice too. I've never been to the L.A. area before and am not entirely sure what to expect. Could use some advice! Thanks.

Last year was Earth's warmest on record, separate reports by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released on Friday showed. Since 1880, when record-keeping began, Earth's average surface temperature has warmed by about 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit, a trend that is largely driven by the increase in carbon dioxide and other human emissions into the planet's atmosphere, NASA said.

CASSELTON – A Cass County deputy responding to a motorist that had crashed into a cow off Interstate 94 Monday morning had to go to the hospital himself after the injured cow charged him at the scene. Cass County Sgt. Dean Haaland said the deputy was responding to the crash at about 3 a.m. at mile marker 332 west of Casselton when the cow, injured in the crash, charged him. The deputy was knocked to the ground and suffered some bruising, Haaland said. When he got up, the cow charged again, and the deputy fired upon the animal to keep...

Oshkosh - As they flew over Tokyo, Richard Cole and David Thatcher realized with relief that Japanese anti-aircraft gunners had never before fired at enemy planes. As the first Americans to strike Japan's home islands during World War II, Cole and Thatcher found that the ack-ack-ack of the flak guns did little damage to the 16 B-25B Mitchell medium bombers that achieved fame as the Doolittle Raiders. It was only four months after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, and Japanese military commanders had promised their nation that it was invulnerable. The American crews lost all their planes and their...
  • What to do with old bottles of alcohol.

I was gifted a few old bottles of booze. Among them was a bottle of Wiser's, a bottle of "Shenley American Wiskey", a bottle of "Shenley Gin", and a bottle of Crown Royal in addition to a few glass sample bottles from the same era. None of these have been opened and are sealed with a liquor tax stamp dating from 1959 for the bottle of Crown to the mid sixties. I'm inclined to just open and drink them since I don't want to keep clutter just because it's old. But could I sell them? How? Do you think they...
