I must begin with an apology if I have made an error in how/where I've posted this vanity as it is my first in 18 years as a lurker/intermittent poster. That being said, I fear that in roughly 10 hours from the time I "pen" this "letter" I shall bear witness to the last words I shall ever hear uttered from the lips of my father. I won't go into details about his condition, but I fear I may not have the strength to keep my composure when I visit him in the hospital (please no crass remarks about Covid/the...

Former President Obama's tweet sharing a message against racism is officially the most-liked tweet ever. Obama posted a tweet sharing a quote from Nelson Mandela that condemned racism just hours after a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va. turned violent. Obama's tweet after Charlottesville becomes the most-liked tweet ever. The tweet became the most popular of all time on Tuesday night, with more than 2.7 million likes, three days after it was posted. "No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion..." Obama wrote in the tweet. The tweet...

Harrison Ford probably won't be wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat anytime soon. Donald Trump recently praised the actor’s film Air Force One, but Ford, 73, isn't thrilled about the kind words. In a New York Times article published earlier this month, Trump, 69, said that his favorite film representation of a president was the 1997 action hit, which centered on Ford's commander-in-chief fighting back after his plane is highjacked. Donald Trump's Former Flames "I love Harrison Ford — and not just because he rents my properties," the Republican presidential hopeful said. "He stood up for America." The Star...

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Ku Klux Klan will hold a rally at the South Carolina State House next month to protest efforts to remove the Confederate flag from the Capitol grounds. Any group can request to hold a rally at the State House as long as its grounds are available, said Brian Gaines, a spokesman for the South Carolina Budget and Control Board. The Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan requested the rally from 3 to 5 p.m. on July 18, Gaines said. The Klan is expecting 100 to 200 to attend, according to a copy of its...

This question is mostly directed toward the moderators. When I attempt to send a private reply, I get the message "Your account is too new to use this feature." The problem with this is that my account was created on November 8, 2004. I figure a little more than a decade qualifies as being a veteran, not a newbie. I respectfully request an explanation as to why I cannot do this. Thank you. -EA

Hi, Thank you for signing the petition supporting President Obama's plan for sensible gun safety measures. Showing intense public support today is incredibly important--can you also share this petition with your friends, and urge them to sign it? A sample email you can send to your friends is below. Thanks! -------- Hi, Did you hear about President Obama's plan for gun safety, released today? It's a really great plan, the boldest any politician has been on this issue in a long time. It includes executive actions, and a call for legislation to ban military style assault weapons, high capacity ammunition...

Bill Clinton he was not. When it came to smoking pot, the teenage Barack Obama had rules. You had to embrace "total absorption" or face a penalty. When you smoked in the car, "the windows had to be rolled up." And he could horn his way in, calling out "Intercepted!" and grab the joint out of turn. Best-selling author David Maraniss' "Barack Obama: The Story" describes the future president's teenage antics, notably his copious marijuana smoking, details of which were published early Friday by Buzzfeed. While the book won't be released until June 19, vast sections of it were already...

A new Amnesty International report paints a gruesome picture of summary executions, torture and ill-treatment in North Korea as Kim Jong Un succeeded his late father, Kim Jong Il, as the country's ruler last December. The country used firing squads or staged traffic accidents to execute 30 officials involved in talks to unite North and South Korea, according to the 2012 Amnesty International report released Thursday. It also notes that the country had been questioned about another 37 reported executions between 2007 and 2010 for "financial crimes." As the ruling authority shifted to Kim Jong Un, the country's State Security...

I am curious to hear from those FReeper brothers and sisters who find themselves firmly ensconced within the public education system. I am curious to know what your beliefs are about the current crisis with the unions and the states' decisions to eradicate collective bargaining for teachers. Also, I am curious to know what my fellow FReeper educators think honestly about implementation of a merit-pay based system for teacher evaluation. Since I cannot discern which of my FReeper brethren are educators in any other fashion, this is the only way I could think of to get the "pulse" of their...

The mother of a severely malnourished 4-year-old found dead last week in Brooklyn would beat her tyke with a belt and force-feed the child sleeping pills, authorities said yesterday. Carlotta Brett-Pierce was especially furious with her daughter, Marchella, because the girl, who weighed a mere 18 pounds when she died, would get up at night and "eat from the fridge and make a mess," said prosecutor Tracey Downing at a Brooklyn Criminal Court hearing.

A plush residential building known as the Camelot just off Times Square is a favorite address for Internet con artists who rip off gullible vacationing Europeans for thousands of dollars. “I can’t believe this is happening,” moaned Niati Mavungu, 31, a fashion designer from France who turned up Friday morning with friend Emmanuelle Guad, 29, a social worker from Switzerland for what they thought was a two week vacation in a luxury rental.

In tough economic times, it’s easy to gin up anger against elites. The bashing of bankers is already so robust that the economist William Easterly has compared it, with perhaps a touch of hyperbole, to genocidal racism. But in recent months, a more unlikely privileged group has found itself in the cross hairs: tenured professors.

A 2006 Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigation into the purchase of child pornography online turned up more than 250 civilian and military employees of the Defense Department -- including some with the highest available security clearance -- who used credit cards or PayPal to purchase images of children in sexual situations. But the Pentagon investigated only a handful of the cases, Defense Department records show.

A fire that blackened nearly 900 acres in San Diego County was caused by illegal immigrants who were apparently lost and set off a signal fire. The Cowboy Fire did not burn any homes or cause injuries. More than 1,300 firefighters battled Friday's blaze.

A former Guantanamo “terrorism” detainee who walked away a free man in 2005 will shoot his way out of the U.S. prison in a new Xbox 360 video game based on the camp. Moazzam Begg, who spent nearly two years in the U.S. detention camp without charges, will play himself in the game, which could rake in £3 million ($5 million). Rendition: Guantanamo lets players control a detainee trying to shoot his way out, meaning the game's creators needed to know the layout of the prison. Begg has been consulting on the project, under development for more than a year...

A public that wants to know everything about Barack Obama can thank Lisa Jack for a glimpse of what the future president was like when he was just another college freshman trying to cut a figure in this world -- with a partly unbuttoned Oxford shirt, a big Panama hat and puffs of cigarette smoke as his props of choice for projecting that coveted aura of post-adolescent confidence and cool. Obama can thank Jack for keeping the roll of photographs she took of him in 1980 out of circulation until he was elected. Nine were first published in Time magazine's...
