Public: Response to Katrina Better Now Than Just After Hurricane Hit Most Americans were not impressed with the initial response to Hurricane Katrina, but according to the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup survey, majorities of Americans now say that the people and officials involved in the rescue effort are doing a good job. Most Americans believe that government agencies in New Orleans should have been better prepared, and they support the proposal for an independent investigation into the problems with the government's response. But they reject the notion that race or poverty were reasons why the government was slow to respond.

Public opinion in America on the war in Iraq seems to be divided chiefly between those who think the cause is hopeless, and those who wonder why Iraq isn't Switzerland yet. Those in the first group are further divided between those who think our cause is hopeless because we are undeserving (most prominent Democrats) and those who think it is hopeless because the Iraqis are undeserving (George Will, Richard Pipes). Those in the second group tend to think that if we encounter any difficulties in Iraq, it has to be because some American (probably President Bush) was negligent. Relatively few...

Poll: U.S. Has Made Case Against Iraq NEW YORK, Feb. 7, 2003 (CBS) As Americans weigh the evidence presented Wednesday to the United Nations by Secretary of State Colin Powell, a new CBS News poll shows an increasing percentage believe the case has been made for military action, but most still prefer that the U.S. get U.N. approval before taking such action and would like to give the weapons inspectors more time to work. Americans remain generally supportive of military action against Iraq – a feeling that hasn’t changed much since last fall. In this poll, 70% approve of the...

President Bush has reversed the downward drift in public support for war with Iraq despite widespread fears that the conflict would continue for many months and produce large numbers of U.S. casualties, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. After the president's State of the Union speech on Tuesday in which he laid out the case for a U.S.-led invasion, the survey found that 66 percent of Americans favor taking military action against Iraq, up from 57 percent two weeks ago and the most support for war since mid-September. Slightly more than six in 10 Americans also approve of the...

The credibility of the United Nations may be on the line in the War with Iraq. Yet, as the world awaits the January 27 report from inspectors, just 48% of Americans have a favorable opinion of the United Nations. Thirty-one percent (31%) have an unfavorable opinion while 21% are not sure. In another sign of limited support for the UN, a question was asked about how the US should act if the United Nations "opposes taking military action against Iraq." Even if the world body goes on record opposing War, 46% of Americans would support the United States acting alone...

My thoughts as posted on the DOSE last evening: POLLS I agree with some polling pundits (e.g., Charlie Cook): We should IGNORE all polls concerning our COURAGEOUS president until late summer/early fall of 2004. WHY? 1.) Most Americans suffer from severe 'Attention Deficit Disorder' -- they simply will not focus on the 2004 elections until a few months before Election day. Approval ratings prior to this time will merely track 'real time' perceptions of current economic conditions! [Any way, in today's world these 'real time perceptions' can change in an instant -- a 'state of the union' address here an...

PRINCETON, NJ -- A new Gallup Poll, conducted Jan. 13-16, shows George W. Bush's job approval rating at 61%. Thirty-four percent of Americans disapprove of the job Bush is doing. The approval percentage is slightly higher than that found in a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll conducted Jan. 10-12. That brings Bush's final averages for the most recent quarter to 63.5% and for his second year in office to 71.4%. The quarterly average places in the top 30% of presidential quarters dating back to 1945, and the yearly average is the eighth highest since 1945.
