Three members of the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins decided not to attend an event Tuesday honoring the team at the White House due to political differences with the president. The Sun-Sentinel reported that Hall of Fame center Jim Langer, defensive tackle Manny Fernandez and guard Bob Kuechenberg skipped the event, which made up for the time the team did not get the chance to go to the White House because, in part, President Richard Nixon was embroiled in the Watergate scandal. The three players spoke with the paper and kept their comments brief, but direct.

A dog with an abnormal appetite that left the pooch with "rock hard abs" underwent emergency surgery at BluePearl Veterinary hospital in Eden Prairie, Minn., on Wednesday to remove 16 rocks weighing almost 2 lbs. The 7-year-old golden retriever named Gordon likely ate river rocks out of a garden, but the dog's owner was perplexed by the pooch's stony meal since food is always accessible. Dr. Jeff Yu performed the successful two-hour operation. "You don't see too many dogs eat this many rocks usually," Yu remarked. "Most dogs will stop after one or two, but Gordon certainly had quite the...

Some 60 years after carrying wounded soldiers and ammunition during heavy firefights, a decorated war horse praised as America’s greatest equine soldier during the Korean War is finally being immortalized. Staff Sgt. Reckless, a Mongolian mare that served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, made 51 solo trips during a five-day battle in March 1953, carrying nearly 10,000 pounds of ammunition and explosives from a supply depot to the front lines. She was wounded twice and later received two Purple Hearts for her service, as well as several other military decorations. On Friday, a 10-foot bronze statue...

President Obama has nominated a slew of campaign donors and fundraisers for ambassadorships including major bundlers Denise Bauer and a Los Angeles entertainment attorney Crystal Nix Hines. As of last month, Obama had given 32.2 percent of ambassadorships to political appointees -- almost identical to his first term rate and slightly higher than those of recent predecessors in the long-held tradition of presidents rewarding big-time financial supporters. The number compares to 30.02 percent under George W. Bush, 27.82 percent under Bill Clinton and 31.30 percent under George H.W. Bush, according to the American Foreign Service Association. The president has nominated...

'They fly in town, they get shot down,' man says" DEER TRAIL, Colo. - The small town of Deer Trail, Colorado is considering a bold move. The town board will be voting on an ordinance that would create drone hunting licenses and offer bounties for unmanned aerial vehicles. Deer Trail resident, Phillip Steel, drafted the ordinance. "We do not want drones in town," said Steel. "They fly in town, they get shot down." Even though it's against the law to destroy federal property, Steel's proposed ordinance outlines weapons, ammunition, rules of engagement, techniques, and bounties for drone hunting. The ordinates...

Just last month, a supposedly declassified video showed a German-flown drone narrowly missing a flying Afghan passenger jet. Now, another “secret” video has made its way into public view, showing an unmanned aerial vehicle piloted remotely hitting a plane on a runway in Afghanistan. The German tabloid paper Bild (translated via Google Translate) claims to have “exclusive video footage documenting another, earlier drone debacle.” It describes the UAV as a IAI Heron ramming into a Transall C-160 Transport plane at a base in Northern Afghanistan.

An Ohio World War II airman who was shot down and captured while flying aboard a B-17 over Europe made another trip on an identical vintage bomber Thursday. Joseph Dreher, 88, flew 29 missions over Europe on a B-17 as a radio operator and waist gunner with the U.S. 8th Army Air Forces, The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. Dreher was taken prisoner after parachuting from his flak-damaged aircraft on his 29th and final mission -- an experience that did not deter him from returning to the skies once more. The B-17 he flew aboard Thursday was the "Sentimental Journey," a...

You'll recall that in this space we recently told you about Chase the bat dog -- an affable and beloved golden retriever who spent much of his life fetching bats for the Double-A Trenton Thunder (Yankees). Just a few days ago, the Thunder held a retirement ceremony for Chase, who was battling a cancer diagnosis. Now, NJ.com passes along word that Chase has died at the age of 13. "Chase was such a tremendous part of the Trenton Thunder identity for more than 10 years," said Thunder General Manager Will Smith. "His presence at Arm & Hammer Park or in...

The largest full moon of 2013, a so-called "supermoon," will light up the night sky this weekend, but there's more to this lunar delight than meets the eye. On Sunday, June 23, at 7 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT), the moon will arrive at perigee — the point in its orbit its orbit bringing it closest to Earth), a distance of 221,824 miles. Now the moon typically reaches perigee once each month (and on some occasions twice), with their respective distances to Earth varying by 3 percent.

DAYTON, Ohio – A plane carrying a wing walker crashed at an air show and exploded into flames Saturday, killing the pilot and stunt walker instantly, authorities said. The crash of the 450 HP Stearman happened at around 12:45 p.m. at the Vectren Air Show at Dayton International Airport. No spectators were hurt. A video posted on WHIO-TV shows the plane turn upside-down as the performer sits on top of the wing. The plane then tilts and crashes to the ground, erupting into flames as spectators screamed. Ian Hoyt, an aviation photographer and licensed pilot from Findlay, was at the...
