NEW BRUNSWICK — City resident Jose Villanueva sends a portion of his monthly earnings to his family in Honduras every month. And each time he does, Western Union takes a chunk of that money. For every $300 Villanueva sends, the global corporation charges him $11 to $15 per wire transfer, he said at a forum — held in New Brunswick Tuesday — about Western Union's fees. "They should lower those fees and give some of that money to the community," Villanueva said. "When you think about the money they are making, most of it has to be from the Latino...

I recently received an alert regarding Section 6 (Security Requirements) of the FAA's guidelines for space tourism (thread posted by Stoat HERE). It seems the language of the second paragraph has some folks in an uproar. I've copied the entire section below, and would like to hear some opinions on how we should be interpreting that second paragraph. 6. Security Requirements The FAA requires an operator to implement security requirements to prevent any space flight participant from jeopardizing the safety of the flight crew or the public. As in the NPRM, under § 460.53, a space flight participant may not...

Sixty people crowded into a small room at the Bayonne police firing range to witness smart gun technology. Donald H. Sebastian, PhD, senior vice president of research and development at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), stood near an oversized screen displaying a real-time video of an NJIT policeman shooting an experimental handgun in an adjacent indoor range. Although there was no applause as shots rang out, the action demonstrated that smart gun knew friend from foe. Sixteen electronic computerized sensors embedded in the gun’s grip distinguished known from unknown users. “We’ve only just begun and we’re pleased to say...

This is the last week to make your voice heard on the AWB. This ridiculous ban will finally be allowed to ride off into the sunset on September 13, but only if YOU do something about it. You'd better believe that those in favor of extending the ban will be out in force this week, so we need to meet that force with one of our own. Find your representatives at the following links: Congress - http://www.house.gov/writerep/(You'll be able to send email directly from this page.) New Jersey Senate President Richard (Dick) Codey is the driving force behind New Jersey's recent efforts to require “childproof guns” when the technology becomes “economically viable.” Codey recently issued a statement regarding a protest in front of the New Jersey state capitol, held by the Second Amendment Sisters. That statement mocked the group by referring to them as the “twisted sisters,” all because of the group’s opposition to his proposed gun control laws. Actually, the Second Amendment Sisters simply advocate a woman’s “right to choose” to own and carry firearms. But Dick Codey thinks the government should make that choice...

The person who shall so receive, or acquire said firearm shall,...

WASHINGTON -- After more than a year of debate amid fierce opposition from the airline industry, Congress is poised to give thousands of commercial pilots the right to carry guns in the cockpit.

A bill expected to clear Congress this week will enable airline pilots to voluntarily carry pistols on the flight deck after undergoing a training course tailored by the FBI. More than half of the nation's 80,000 to 100,000 passenger airline pilots may eventually participate, according to experts.

The National Center for Health Statistics reports that guns killed 30,708 people in 1998. Fifty-six percent of those deaths were suicides. Since 1998, recurring incidents of gun violence and threats of violence on school campuses, in the workplace and in communities throughout the nation have increased the public’s consciousness of the presence of violence in American society. The consciousness that violence occurs unexpectedly has given rise to wide spread concern and even anxiety wherein citizens question, "Could this happen in my school, at my workplace or in my community?" In recent years, tens of thousands of people across the nation,...

The United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit recently upheld a Massachusetts state statute that prohibits target shooters at specified gun clubs from taking aim at images of human beings and human-shaped targets. Pursuant to the Massachusetts law, shooting at bullseyes and other non-human representations (of animals, for example) is permitted, but shooting at human pictures is not. The statute contains a limited exception for "public safety personnel performing in line with their official duties." The Gun Owners' Action League and other gun enthusiasts sued, arguing that the Massachusetts law violates the First Amendment. But in a ruling...

KEANSBURG -- Monmouth County Prosecutor John Kaye is issuing a directive today ordering every Keansburg police officer to go through new firearms qualifications testing by May 1 or he will disarm the entire department.

Kaye said yesterday that he still hasn't received enough information to determine whether suspended Police Chief Raymond B. O'Hare falsified firearms qualification records for some of his officers, one of the charges that led to his suspension on March 14.

EAST BRUNSWICK -- U.S. Sen. Jon S. Corzine and two other New Jersey legislators say $250,000 isn't enough for the pain and suffering of families who lost a loved one in the World Trade Center attacks.

After attending a sometimes-heated meeting at the Brunswick Hilton yesterday with families affected by the attack, the lawmakers said that they want the Victims' Compensation Fund to be increased and that other changes need to be made in the law that created it.

TRENTON -- In the summer of 1998, a woman in the Fords section of Woodbridge called the Home News Tribune to complain about muskrats burrowing into her back yard. It was a slow news day, so a reporter called the township health department to check on other muskrat sightings and any official response.

Al Gore, who lost the race for the presidency in November, hopes to get back on the winning side of an election this year -- he's offering to come to New Jersey to campaign for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jim McGreevey. The former vice president, who has spent the past several months in political hibernation, has had aides contact McGreevey's campaign to discuss appearances. New Jersey has one of only two gubernatorial races this fall. The other is in Virginia, where Gore is also likely to offer to campaign as he mulls another shot at the White House in 2004. He ...

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Overly simplistic, dramatic or glamorous media depictions of suicide may encourage others to take their own lives, a national panel of experts said Thursday. They are issuing guidelines to media outlets on how to approach stories that involve suicide. "The media often look for simple explanations as the cause of a suicide," said Dr. Herbert Hendin, medical director of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), "when in fact, the cause of an individual suicide is invariably more complicated than a recent painful event such as the break-up of a relationship or the loss of ...

Guess which gun-loving New Jersey Republican leader uttered the following words: "I believe in the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms. You have to understand the kind of society we live in today and the public does have a right, everyone has agreed, to some form of protection." Was it: a) Bret Schundler in 2001 or b) Christie Whitman in 1993? The correct answer is b) Christie Whitman. That would be the same Christie Whitman who was quoted the other day in the Washington Post taking some shots at Schundler on the gun issue. Whitman told the Post's editors ...

Just the other day I read another of those commentaries questioning the idea of removing tolls from the Garden State Parkway. I think I've seen about a thousand of them since the anti- toll movement gathered steam earlier this year. Typically, the writer drones on in great detail about all the problems toll removal will create. As for the problems the toll booths create for us drivers, tough luck. I think it is fair to say that the defenders of the status quo in this instance are largely people who would qualify as liberals, especially now that the anti-toll cause ...
