Is it just me, or does this case remind everyone of Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities"? I can't help but see a huge parallel between the "unfairly privledged" lacrosse players and Wolfe's Sherman McCoy. And the DA in this case, Nifong? He just screams Larry Kramer to me-- some lawyer who wants to make a name for himself, even if it means being a slimy snake along the way. I remember being outraged while reading "Bonfires". I couldn't believe how justice was being subjugated to re-election vanities and unfair racial politics. It disgusted me to see that this EXACT plot is being played out RIGHT NOW. I don't even see how people can deny the blatant outrageouness of this case. To illustrate, (although we already all know the answer to this), would this case have even made it to court had the tables been turned-- that is, had a white woman stripper been raped by 3 black basketball players from North Carolina Podunk University? Heck no, especially not in Durham.

I also can't help but acknowledge Tom Wolfe's incredible foresight in using Duke University and its "evil athletes" as a model for his most recent book, "I am Charlotte Simmons."
