Sen. Norm Coleman late this morning declared victory for a second term from Minnesota, even as the wheels are churning toward an automatic recount of the nearly 3 million votes cast in his battle with Democrat Al Franken. The Republican, whose margin in the unofficial state tally stands at 725 votes, said from his headquarters in St. Paul that he is "humbled and grateful for the victory that the voters gave us last night." He then said Franken should abandon any pursuit of a recount, saying that "the prospect of overturning 725 votes is extremely, extremely, extremely remote." Franken could...

Two UCLA economists say they have figured out why the Great Depression dragged on for almost 15 years, and they blame a suspect previously thought to be beyond reproach: President Franklin D. Roosevelt. After scrutinizing Roosevelt's record for four years, Harold L. Cole and Lee E. Ohanian conclude in a new study that New Deal policies signed into law 71 years ago thwarted economic recovery for seven long years. "Why the Great Depression lasted so long has always been a great mystery, and because we never really knew the reason, we have always worried whether we would have another 10-...

BEIRUT -- A new report based on previously classified documents suggests that the Nixon and Ford administrations created conditions that helped destabilize Iran in the late 1970s and contributed to the country's Islamic Revolution. A trove of transcripts, memos and other correspondence show sharp differences over rising oil prices developing between the Republican administrations and Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi in the mid-1970s, says a report to be published today in the fall issue of Middle East Journal, an academic journal published by the Washington-based Middle East Institute, a think tank.

Watch this video from this morning. Goes through a study by the University of Wisconsin that shows this past weekend, Obama ran 1,342 negative ads against John McCain while McCain ran 8 (EIGHT!!!) against Obama in the same time period. Yet the MSM says McCain is running a negative campaign?

Here is a 7 minute video of Palin addressing the troops (her son Track one of them) and families on September 11th at Fort Wainwright

Tonight's NFL opener between the Giants and Redskins is certainly unfortunate for McCain's speech. Plus the game is on NBC so you lose one of the big 4 networks. The Media will go out and say that B.O. got 30,000,000 viewers but he didn't have to go against the NFL and didn't have one network short carrying speech. Plus, the game tonight features the New York Giants, the largest market team in the NFL who also are the defending Super Bowl champions.

Guest “Dr. Phil” on Wednesday night chastised David Letterman's misunderstanding of teenage sexual behavior and parental influence after Letterman sarcastically complained that if a President McCain “drops dead...don't you want your President to have had the presence of mind to have chatted to her teenaged kids for five minutes about birth control?” (Letterman delivered the same belittling joke the night before too.) Referring to Letterman's almost five-year-old son, daytime TV host Phil McGraw, aka “Dr. Phil,” informed Letterman: Let me tell you something, new dad. If you are under the misapprehension that when Harry is 17 that you are going...

It was revealed today that the publisher of US Weekly is a heavy contributor to the B.O. campaign. Nothing wrong with that. But when you put B.O. on your cover last week in the light they did and then a week later on the cover put Palin on there with the words "lie and scandal", well you deserve to be called out. These people have no scruples at all. Politely let them know how you feel and cancel your subscriptions. letters@usmagazine.com USWcustserv@cdsfulfillment.com

WASHINGTON - Dismissing the GOP presidential field as a "pathetic" bunch of "pygmies," Newt Gingrich hinted Monday he might step in to beat Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama. "If, in mid-October, it's quite clear that one or more of the current candidates is strong enough to be a serious alternative to a Clinton-Obama ticket, you don't need me to run," the former House Speaker said at a breakfast sponsored by the American Spectator. "If it becomes patently obvious, as the morning paper points out, that the Democrats have raised a hundred million more than the Republicans, and at...

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Voters elected a black Democrat as the first Muslim in Congress on Tuesday after a race in which he advocated quick U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and made little mention of his faith. Keith Ellison, a 43-year-old lawyer and state representative, defeated two rivals, television networks said, to succeed retiring Democrat Martin Sabo in a seat that has been held by Democrats since 1963. Ellison, who converted to Islam as a 19-year-old college student in his native Detroit, won with the help of Muslims among a coalition of liberal, anti-war voters. He advocates an immediate U.S....

MEMPHIS -- Tennessee's Republican Party chairman complained to Shelby County election officials that electronic voting machine cards were missing in Memphis, the hometown of Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Harold Ford Jr. "It has come to our attention that several smart cards used in early voting are missing from at least one early voting site in Memphis, Tenn.," Bob Davis said in a later dated Thursday. "The lack of oversight and control over these smartcards has created a situation which could allow for voter fraud." The letter called on the commission to "locate these missing smart cards as soon as possible."...

What The utilization of Google Adwords and simultaneous, widespread embedded hyperlinks in order to drive as many voters as possible toward the most damning, non-partisan article written on the Republican candidates in seventy key US Senate and House races. The campaign will run from Tuesday, October 24th until Tuesday, November 7th. Why According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, the number one way that voters use the Internet for political action is to search for information on candidates. During the final two weeks of the election, it is reasonable to expect that as many as twenty million voters...

Want a Democratic House? Then this is what you'll get: Department of Peace and Nonviolence Act -- H.R. 3760: Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) and 74 Democratic cosponsors propose a new "Department of Peace and Nonviolence" as well as "National Peace Day." Cosponsors include three would-be Democratic Chairmen: John Conyers (Judiciary), George Miller (Education and the Workforce), and Charlie Rangel (Ways and Means). Gas Stamps -- H.R. 3712: Jim McDermott (D-WA) and eight Democratic cosponsors want a "Gas Stamps" program similar to the Food Stamps program to subsidize the gasoline purchases of qualified individuals. Sheriff's Pink Duds Have Inmates Vowing to Reform MASON, Texas (AP) - Three county inmates in the jail here lay on their bunks, not saying much. They wore pink jumpsuits and pink slippers, and one was wrapped in pink sheets. They were surrounded by pink bars and pink walls. They were not comfortable. Despite the cramped condition of the tiny jail, the inmates said sitting there was better than working outside, where they might be seen by people they know. Using pink uniforms in a pink jail is a small step to deter inmates from ever wanting to spend more...
