Exactly. The enviro-weenies don’t want solutions. If they did, we’d be going nuclear as fast as possible. They want total and complete destruction of the capitalist system and eventual reversion to middle-ages peonage for everyone except themselves and their elite friends. The new feudalism where they rule redneck, unenlightened serfs. Only problem is, long before that happens the serfs are going to line them up and blow the vacuum they call brains right out of their skulls.

I really don’t see much of a problem with the article. It simply suggests, without much evidence, that Todd may be too involved with things he’s not supposed to be. Whether that is true or not is really pretty much dependent on each reader’s perspective. At this point, every person contacted for a story like this is going to have an axe to grind, one way or another. Especially the liberal-leaning reporter. If this is the best they can dig up, its pretty thin gruel.

After Watching Sarah Palin’s interview with Sean Hannity and her comment that you have to have thick skin to be in a presidential campaign, I sincerely doubt something like this is going to bother her. Cards from PP will just wind up in the garbage, like most junk mail.

Any politician and any employee of a politician, which Paulson is, cannot allow option A to happen. If only to save his own skin. You have to be seen to be doing _something_. Nothing was what the Fed tried during the Great Depression.

Will it only delay the inevitable? Probably. But perhaps the landing can be cushioned somehow. I have no idea how, but it is certainly worth trying.

It’s not the school system, its the people who run the school system. Here in Valdez, a kid gifted in math can proceed at his or her appropriate level. For example, I have an 8th grader in college algebra earning college credit. I had him in 6th grade for geometry and 7th grade for Algebra II (this is my 22nd year of teaching high school mathematics).

what I would suggest is to have the person get singapore math books. Or start the kid on algebra. Math is pretty sequential in terms of the topics and difficulty. If this young lady has the maturity for math I suspect she does, then jumping her into algebra should not be a problem.

School districts resist placing kids in higher level math classes because it makes them uncomfortable. Its a bother and a pain to rearrange schedules, etc. Of course, their job is to teach _all_ the kids, but they think that applies to only kids at the bottom.

Another possibility is to find a sympathetic math teacher or two in the school district and see if they can help out. An experienced math teacher should be delighted to have a bright and energetic student in their class.

  • Investigator: Palin probe to end before election

    HA!

Hollis French’s part may well end before the election. But the probe itself is dead until after the election with none of the major people actually testifying. If French tries to pull a fast one and issue a report based on what he has so far, it will either be a whitewash or so totally skewed as to be absolutely worthless. It all depends on how much French is in the tank to the Obama campaign. I can see a big fight coming over whether to simply dissolve the committee.

Alaska is still like that in many ways. We have quite a few lesbians in Valdez, but nobody makes a big deal about them. We have a wide variety of different religions, and most of the time they get along just fine. Of course, there was the one incident where the female pastor’s (Lutheran) husband got involved with one of the local married women in the church, but...

I do remember one interesting incident back in the 90’s in terms of tolerance of ideas, however. We had one guy show up for some work in the summer who blatantly put a sign in his car window saying “Won’t work with niggers.”

Now there aren’t a lot of african-americans in Valdez, but those who do live here are valued members of the community. About 3 days after this sign went up, while the guy was sleeping in his car, someone shot up the car with about 30 rounds from a 22 rifle. The guy wasn’t hurt, but he got the message and left town the next day. A few months later he was shot and killed by a female security guard on the state ferry system because he was clawing for a gun out of his backpack for some reason.

But, Valdez is a lot bigger than Chickaloon. That place is barely a wide spot in the road. I doubt if there are more than 3-400 people in a thousand square miles around there.

Yeah, but isn’t the investigative committee a joint committee? This means both the House and Senate would have to concur. Not only that, but they would have to call a special legislative session to do this, and everyone is out campaigning for election! I really, really don’t see this happening. Especially with Republican house members. They’re going to vote for a special legislative session to issue warrants to Palin’s staff because they refused a subpoena from a committee where French has said he wants to spring an October surprise on Palin? Ha! and double Ha! Not happening.

“I wouldn’t be so sure. There are 11 Republicans and 9 Dems in the state senate, but 1 (Lyda Green) totally hates Palin and will vote for the subpoenas. At least one other Republican (Huggins) previously voted for the subpoenas in committee. Unless he changes his vote, the resolution passes in the state senate if all the Dems vote for it (which they will).”

This whole issue is over with the AG saying they won’t obey the subpoena. Why? Look at the Alaska laws below (which I pulled from a Democratic Underground post, heh). Note that the committee can’t do diddly squat. They have to report the contempt to the senate and house. Only the Alaska Senate and House can issue warrants to arrest those subpoened. The Senate and House are dominated by Republicans. Even given the fact that some republicans don’t like Palin, they dislike democratic tactics even less, and the people of Alaska are solidly behind Palin. Since I happen to have known John Harris, the speaker, personally for over a decade, and given his letter to the committee, there is no way at all that such warrants will be issued. NO WAY. Troopergate is dead and buried at the least until after the election. The Dems can wail and gnash their teeth all they want, but this is a dead issue.

AS 24.25.030. Disobeying Subpoena or Refusing to Testify.
If a witness neglects or refuses to obey a subpoena, or neglects or refuses to testify or to produce upon reasonable notice any material and proper books, papers, or documents in the possession or under the control of the witness, the senate or house of representatives may by resolution entered on its journal commit the witness for contempt. If contempt is committed before a committee, the committee shall report the contempt to the senate or house of representatives, as the case may be, for such action as may be considered necessary. http://www.touchngo.com/lglcntr/akstats/Statutes/Title2...

AS 24.25.040. Arrest For Disobedience to Subpoena.
A witness who neglects or refuses to attend in obedience to subpoena may be arrested by the sergeant-at-arms and brought before the senate or house of representatives, as the case may be. The only warrant or authority necessary authorizing arrest is a copy of a resolution of the senate or house of representatives signed by the president of the senate or speaker of the house of representatives, as the case may be, and countersigned by the secretary of the senate or the clerk of the house of representatives, as the case may be. http://www.touchngo.com/lglcntr/akstats/Statutes/Title2...

No, Alaska Legislature is not Dem, it is Republican. How do I know? My rep, John Harris, an R, was speaker of the house this past session. And Lyda Green, an R, was Senate Majority leader. I don’t think Dems have been in power in the legislature for decades.

It doesn’t matter if he engages in denial. What this will do is again put him on the defensive for a news cycle or two. Death by a million cuts. Of course, this cut could very well turn out to be a chainsaw slash. :-)

If McCain’s team doesn’t run ads on this, somebody should.

I live in Valdez, Alaska and I have friends with connections to some of the biggest, most influential Republican donors in the state. I have it on good authority that these donors were not happy when Sarah would not answer their phone calls. The good old boy network in Alaska didn’t help elect Sarah, and she is not beholden to them. So I can readily believe that lobbyists have a hard time getting in to see her.

McCain aides whose judgment I trust are impressed by Sarah Palin. One was particularly amused by this exchange: A nervous young McCain staffer took it upon himself to explain to Palin the facts of life in a national campaign, the intense scrutiny she’d be under from the media, the viciousness of the assault that she’d be facing, etc.:
Palin: “Thanks for the warning. By the way, do you know what they say the difference is between a hockey mom and a Pit Bull?”
    McCain aide: “No, Governor.”
Palin: “A hockey mom wears lipstick.”

Every politician, every last one, will have enemies and friends. For anyone to think that Sarah Palin doesn’t have enemies who will do whatever they can to bring her down is absurd. Clearly this is a hit piece. So, where are the hit pieces on Obama and Biden?

One thing I drew from this article is that Sarah Palin clearly has the strength to fight with the big boys, if that wasn’t clear from her taking on the Republican establishment and beating them in 2006.

She may be a person with a pleasant demeanor, but she’s got steel in that spine. Good.
