  • Parents Block Plans to Vaccinate Nine-year-olds against Sex Virus

    Exactly.

She may never have sex outside of wedlock, but most men are (asymptomatic) carriers of the virus, which would naturally include most future husbands.

So is it okay to contract HPV once your married? Will the virus be any less virulent/carcinogenic just because you have a ring on your finger?

No, the real scary thing is that Nifong's action are not all that unusual, and that prosecutors DO get away with this kind of obscenity on a day to day basis in this country.

Once in the cross-hairs of a prosecutor, guilt or innocence become irrelevant details.

Not necessarily. If there was ejaculate present in the vicinity of her genital tract (even externally), it is still conceivable that she could have been impregnated.

Stupid question, and am hoping a Freeper can link me to something helpful.

Does anyone monitor these stories to compile a list of successful self defense shootings? I keep meaning to start a list to proffer when confronted with some anecdote provided by the Sarah Brady clan in support of gun control.

I read about successful self defense shootings almost weekly on Free Republic, and am wondering if there's a way to find them all in one place, for easy reference?

    Thanks!

I wonder if her being female will insulate her from the backlash that ultimate forced the ouster of Lawrence Summers.

God forbid you conclude anything that contradicts PC platitudes, even if it is demonstrably and empirically true.

And also FWIW, I think Penn State is going to smoke ND next year in Happy Valley. The situation that existed this year--where ND had veteran players and Penn State was young--will be reversed in 2007.

I'll concede that they benefitted from an overly high pre-season ranking, which carries an unquantifiable benefit. However, the Irish took a precipitous (and deserved) drop to #12 in the polls after losing to Michigan, and despite ticking off five consecutive wins subsequent to that loss, the Irish were dropped in the polls after wins. Incidentally, ND was dropped further in the polls after beating UCLA than USC dropped after losing to UCLA.

The truth is, however, I don't think the Irish should be ranked any higher than 11 or 12. But I don't think they should be ranked any lower, either.

As for West Virginia. Wow. They lost to South Florida. That bears repeating. West Virginia lost to South Florida. You don't get to have a 2 loss season that includes a loss to South Florida and still agitate for a BCS berth. Objectively, you must acknowledge that.

From whom did they pick pocket a BCS berth? Be specific.

Have you ever even read the BCS rules?

"Far too many Western opinion- makers are so obsessed with demonstrating their tolerance of others' beliefs that they are no longer ever prepared to defend the intellectual and spiritual traditions that made the Western world the tolerant place it is."

That pretty much sums up modern liberalism to me.

Oh, I'm with you more than you could possibly know.

The income tax philosophically offends me on a soulfully profound level.

Actually, any tax not directly correlated to consumption and/or punitive of producers offends me in a simlar manner.

If we could just get rid of payroll withholding and force all employees to write a check to the IRS every single pay period, we might begin to erode the mindset that the moneys paid into the income tax system is somehow derived from the ether.

It is money EARNED that belongs to the EMPLOYEE, who is subsequently divested of a portion of those earnings by the IRS. It never ceases to amaze me the number of people who, when asked how much they make in a pay period, will report their net income.

Withholding has made many of us very, very complacent about taxation.

No kidding. Seems almost sacrilegious to cast a quintessential "looter" in the role of Dagny Taggart.

I'm sure I'll see the movie out of sheer intrigue, but I'm already cringing at the liberties I'm sure they'll take with the fundamental principles propounded in the book. Ugh.

We had tix to the ND/PSU game, but had to trade them for Michigan tix because we have to attend a wedding this Saturday. I'm still nursing the disappointment.

Oh, don't I know it. My own sister is in that camp, and it makes me so tragically sad, my heart might burst.

It is not ever lost on me, disgruntled as I might get, what a gift and blessing my children are to me.

    I agree Sasha.

I think one of the reasons people feel so compelled to opine on the subject is that human reproduction is so ubiquitous that just about everybody can reproduce. Because of that, it's one area where even the least gifted among us feel qualified to critique.

I live by the adage, "there but for the grace of God go I," meaning that instead of assuming in my ominipotent wisdom that parents of challenging kids must be doing something wrong, that perhaps they are confronted with a challenge I, too, would be ill-equipped to handle. Conversely, I don't assume that my unimpeachable parenting skills are the reason that I have relatively well-behaved kids.

It keeps me humble as a parent, and as a human being.

I noted in one of my previous posts (#393) that we do try to get the bulkhead. We try to do it when we make the reservation, and we try again at the airport, but they're usually taken. They have more legroom, so they apparently get snatched up really fast.

And bless your heart for trying to help other moms. I do the same, as does my husband. I can either bitch about the kids on the plane, or I can lend a hand, whether with a smile or an offer to dig something out of a carry-on or whatever. Fortunately, if I fly with the kids, I don't fly without another adult, so it could be worse.

At any rate, I think my original point has been somewhat diluted. My kids are actually really good on the plane, my son (4) moreso than my daughter (the baby). We rarely fly, and when we do, we come prepared, and we give them our undivided attention on the plane. We don't read, we don't sleep, we don't watch the in-flight movie.

My only point was that even when vigilant, there are times those little feet get away from you. To be clear, I usually have the people in front of them compliment me because the kids are so well behaved and the kicking is so minimal, but that's because we literally hold their feet nearly the entire flight.

We've tried. They won't let you book empty seats.

We've tried to reserve the bulkheads. We've had mild success with that (they're very coveted seats apparently). We've tried to do two and two seats, where two of us are in one row, and the other two are directly in front of the others. That still leaves one poor sucker who ends up getting kicked.

We have always bought seats for the kids, even when they were lap children (where you can hold them on your lap) to ensure that we have enough room to at least reduce or minimize the amount of disruption to others, but as was my original point, it's just almost impossible to eliminate all of it.
