Pickpockets Hit Notre Dame in New Orleans

Just as sports enthusiasts will travel to New Orleans for a big event like the Sugar Bowl, so will criminals.

Notre Dame officials refuse to confirm that their football players were pick pocketed after arriving in the city however, they do say they are handling the situation internally.

Rachel Thimlar and her friends are just a few of the hundreds of Notre Dame students heading to New Orleans for the game.

She says she was concerned when she heard the news.

“Pick pocketed makes me a little nervous because I've heard a lot of stories about New Orleans,” Thimlar admits. “We’ll definitely be careful. Going anywhere you have to be like that, but it wouldn't stop me (from going to the game) for a second.”

We spoke with New Orleans police by phone and they tell us pickpockets are looking to target the most susceptible people in a crowd.

They advise you take these steps to protect yourself.

First, don't over drink. It can put you at a disadvantage because you're less aware of your surroundings.

Minimize the amount of jewelry you wear. Pickpockets target people wearing flashy or excessive jewelry.

Be alert in large crowds. It's easier for a pickpocket to take your property when people are packed in, body to body.

Don't carry a lot of cash and keep those valuables in your front pockets.

“I think if our people stay in that downtown area, they are going to have a phenomenal New Orleans, Louisiana experience,” says Athletic Director Kevin White. “It will be just like it's always been. We would just discourage people from venturing out in other areas, particularly at late hours without appropriate caution.”

The area surrounding the Superdome is not among New Orleans' worst crime districts, according to police there.

But remember, pickpockets are visiting the "Big Easy" for this bowl game too and making yourself an easy a target could turn your trip into a big disaster.

"Stay in the Green Zone and you might make it back home."

New Orleans is especially bad but you could say that about any large city in the U.S.

Neuter Lame has been pick pocketed and they are going to get beaten to a pulp by LSU in the Sugar Bowl.

This trip to the Big Easy will have lots of unhappy memories for them.

OK, I'll ask. What does street crime have to do with weather?

Street crime causes moral lows.

Low pressure systems develop.

Low pressure systems are responsible for storms.

I can tell you where you got them and how much you paid for them.

You got them on your feet and you paid too much for them.

I'll concede that they benefitted from an overly high pre-season ranking, which carries an unquantifiable benefit. However, the Irish took a precipitous (and deserved) drop to #12 in the polls after losing to Michigan, and despite ticking off five consecutive wins subsequent to that loss, the Irish were dropped in the polls after wins. Incidentally, ND was dropped further in the polls after beating UCLA than USC dropped after losing to UCLA.

The truth is, however, I don't think the Irish should be ranked any higher than 11 or 12. But I don't think they should be ranked any lower, either.

As for West Virginia. Wow. They lost to South Florida. That bears repeating. West Virginia lost to South Florida. You don't get to have a 2 loss season that includes a loss to South Florida and still agitate for a BCS berth. Objectively, you must acknowledge that.

*grin* I can't argue with you there.

FWIW, given the current BCS rules Notre Dame should be in. Wisconsin and Auburn have an argument, but the rules don't allow it, and that's that.

And also FWIW, I think Penn State is going to smoke ND next year in Happy Valley. The situation that existed this year--where ND had veteran players and Penn State was young--will be reversed in 2007.

What're they talking about, like the criminals "traveled" to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl!?

They've BEEN there all along!!
(Well, maybe a few are returning from Houston)

Sounds like a great place to set up a pickpocket with rat traps in an open purse, or maybe a bundle of concertina wire?

Similar to a thought I had; a belt with an attached looped piano wire pocket insert in the wallet pocket, to trap the thief. The harder he struggles to escape, the worse the damage. Plainclothes setups should use it.

It takes real talent to pick pocket an entire BCS bowl invite from a legitimate team.

LOL!

The BCS hasn't ever been about selecting the best teams, it's been about the MONEY first and foremost.

Notre Dame WILL make the BCS more money than West Virginia or Wisconsin or any of the other teams that didn't make the BCS.

That's just the way it is.

Yes the system sucks.

Voting is a horrid system. Money plus voting = Notre Dame in the BCS.

We are likely to find that out again in the title game, Urban Whiner's hystrionic lip biting act will likely end up a good comedy routine.......
