WASHINGTON (AP) - The nearly two-decade-old question of what happened to Navy Capt. Michael "Scott" Speicher has been answered. The military says remains found in the Iraq desert have been identified as those of the pilot, whose plane was shot down on the first night of the 1991 Gulf War. The Pentagon says the remains were found after officials received new information from an Iraqi citizen last month, and were positively identified yesterday by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. The Pentagon initially declared Speicher killed, but changed his status to "missing in action" and later "missing-captured." His shattered plane...

Well, this is interesting. On my main computer when I turn it on, at the point that it should give me my desktop, it now just gives me a bunch of blue and white lines vertically up and down the screen. Anybody have any idea what this might be? Mt guess would be the video card, but I'm just guessing. For the record I honestly don't remember if that computer is logged in or not.

The Dalai Lama, a lifelong champion of non-violence on Saturday candidly stated that terrorism cannot be tackled by applying the principle of ahimsa because the minds of terrorists are closed. "It is difficult to deal with terrorism through non-violence," the Tibetan spiritual leader said delivering the Madhavrao Scindia Memorial Lecture here. He also termed terrorism as the worst kind of violence which is not carried by a few mad people but by those who are very brilliant and educated. "They (terrorists) are very brilliant and educated...but a strong ill feeling is bred in them. Their minds are closed," the Dalai...

Bad beat of the year: The Danish government wants 73% of Peter Eastgate's WSOP winnings. Peter Eastgate won $9,152,416 in the 2008 WSOP Main Event, but the question is how much of it he will get to keep. Denmark has strict taxation rules for poker winnings - Eastgate has to pay 45% in taxes on winnings up to approximately $520 000 and 75% on the rest (over $8.5 million). The end result will be $6.6 million in taxes, if the Danish government gets what it wants. Eastgate moved to England shortly after reaching the Main Event final table to protect...

MR. RUBIN: Hi. I'm Bob Rubin, the Assistant to the President for Economic Policy, and I'm going to introduce today's topic. The President, as you know, has a broad, comprehensive strategy for dealing with the economic problems of the country for putting the country back on the right track for the long-term. A lot of the legislative and executive actions that have taken place in 1993 have been pursuant to that long-term economic strategy of the President's. An important component of that strategy is to deal with the problems of the inner city and distressed rural communities -- pursuant to...

Street musicians are being banned, and so is buying medicines containing "stimulants" without a prescription. Prohibitions are on the rise for the Olympic capital, while the first leaks reveal a grandiose fireworks display for the inauguration. Bar owners around the Workers' Stadium in downtown Beijing say that public security officials are telling them not to let in "blacks" and Mongolians, and many of them have even had to sign a pledge. The official reason is the fight against drugs...

I'm looking for a thread. I'm sure it's a pretty old thread. It's very special to me. It reminds me of better times on this site. I'm not sure of the name. the name really isn't very important. I don't even remember the topic of the thread either. Maybe this last clue will help. It's the last thread I read in which there were no posts whining about immigration. Yeah that's going to be a tough one I know. Maybe somebody has it bookmarked.

WASHINGTON - Federal prosecutors say Saddam Hussein's intelligence agency secretly financed a trip to Iraq for three U.S. lawmakers during the run-up to the U.S.-led invasion. An indictment in Detroit accuses Muthanna Al-Hanooti of arranging for three members of Congress to travel to Iraq in October 2002 at the behest of Saddam's regime. Prosecutors say Iraqi intelligence officials paid for the trip through an intermediary. In exchange, Al-Hanooti allegedly received 2 million barrels of Iraqi oil. The lawmakers are not mentioned but the dates correspond to a trip by Democratic Reps. Jim McDermott of Washington, David Bonior of Michigan and...

PONTIAC, Mich. — Assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian is planning a run for Congress. Kevorkian was released from prison last year and remains on parole. But the 79-year-old told The Oakland Press for an article published Wednesday that he plans to run for office as a candidate with no party affiliation. "We need some honesty and sincerity instead of corrupt government in Washington," Kevorkian said. He said he would say more about his candidacy next week. An artist killed herself after aborting her twins when she was eight weeks pregnant, leaving a note saying: "I should never have had an abortion. I see now I would have been a good mum." Emma Beck was found hanging at her home in Helston, Cornwall, on Feb 1 2007. She was declared dead early the following day - her 31st birthday. Her suicide note read: "I told everyone I didn't want to do it, even at the hospital. I was frightened, now it is too late. I died when my babies died. I want to be with my babies:...

This ought to make your blood boil. And this Marine should receive a commendation for not kicking the living crap out of the guy...seriously. Marine Sgt Mike McNulty is on activation orders to Iraq (second tour). On December 1st, 2007, Mike went to visit a friend in Chicago before deploying to say goodbye. In order to get to his friend's residence, and keep in mind that Chicago is a myriad of diagonal and one-way streets, the front entrance (right way) to the one-way street was blocked. Mike, being a Marine, overcame and adapted by driving around the block to the...

It sounds like a classic scene from The Dukes of Hazzard: A dozen deputies, lights flashing and sirens blaring, driving in circles for 15 miles as they chase a suspect in a stolen sports car at speeds reaching 117 mph. One sheriff's cruiser skids out on a patch of sand, colliding with an oncoming vehicle. Another blows a tire and pulls out of the chase. Two deputies, blinded by the dust kicked up by the stolen car on a lime rock road, crash cruisers through a T-stop intersection. One drives through a fence, the other hits a dirt berm and...

On Monday October 29, 2007... The Multi-National Force Iraq turned over Karbala Province to the Iraqis. This was supposed to be good news, right? It wasn't. The good news was drowned out by media reports that 20 headless bodies were found in Diyala Province. On Tuesday, after there were already questions about this Diyala slaughter, TIME Magazine based their report on this horrible massacre: The horrible discovery in Diyala Province Monday was disturbing even by the standards of Iraq's running sectarian violence. Iraqi police said they found 20 decapitated bodies dumped near a police station west of Baquba, the capital...
