It was imprudent. I don’t fight against law enforcement. None of this changes the fact that he was lawfully carrying. His actions to interfere with law enforcement are a separate question.
I don't know if you two have a history, so I certainly don't want to get in the way of a good argument.
That said, I have read nothing to the effect that the deceased was not lawfully carrying, exercising his 2nd Amendment rights.
If, as reported, he was an ICU nurse, he can't have been stupid, academically speaking.
Whether it was prudent for him to be carrying while either interfering, or appearing to interfere, or attempting to interfere with law enforcement is another question entirely.
