I read with great interest Gordon Thomas' book Seeds of Fire: China and the Attack on America. Most of it was plausible, informative and well-sourced. However, it contained this curious passage on page 17:
The fifty-eight felony counts against [Dr. Wen Ho] Lee were dropped and U.S. District Court Judge James Parker took the highly unusual step of publicly apologizing to Lee for "government misconduct which has embarrassed the entire nation."

"[CIA Director George John] Tenet was not the only one who wondered how much of the apology was generated by the persistent rumors which had percolated through the Washington intelligence community; that Lee's work at Los Alamos was so futuristic that, if he revealed even a hint, it would have monumental repercussions. Lee, ran the whispers, worked on what was known as Project HP — Holographic Portal. This took Los Alamos scientists at the Lawrence Livermore and Sandia laboratories into what can be called "ET technology."

"The portal `is designed to allow time travel across space-time and possibly interdimensionally. In effect it would allow the cliché of Star Trek to come true — to go where no man has gone before.'

"That claim was made by Dr. Richard Boylan. He is no wild card cruising the Internet with crackpot theories. Dr. Boylan is a respected behavioral scientist with proven contacts within the National Security Agency. NSA is responsible for any attempts to make contact with extra-terrestrials. Dr. Boylan is also a renowned lecturer on the campus of California State University; his articles and papers are carefully studied within the Washington intelligence community.

"Boylan is the first to have publicly raised the possibility that Lee was working towards making contact with life far beyond earth. For almost fifty years there have been repeated rumors that Los Alamos was engaged in such work but no one has been able to pinpoint it as the probability Dr. Boylan claims."

This passage sticks out like a sore thumb in Thomas' book. Nothing else in the book seems to relate to it, nor does the author return at any point to such exotic speculations. It is very odd, to say the least.

"One African official commented…: `Some of the State Department officials we speak to seem to have more against President Bush than they do against Osama bin Laden.' …

"Several leaders in the Balkans and Africa have told GIS in June 2003 that they now felt that if they showed any support for the US Bush Administration they would, in effect, be "punished" by the US missions with which they had to deal in their home countries. One Balkan official said: `It's as though they [the US embassy officials] are waiting for the Clinton Administration to come back. And these [embassy] people seem to be very friendly with the people from the [leftist US-based, Hungarian-born businessman] George Soros NGOs. So when we see George Soros attacking Pres. Bush, it becomes very confusing. Is Washington aware of what is going on, here on the ground?'

"Washington sources also told GIS that the State Dept., and Secretary of State Powell, were determined to thwart any movement of US forces worldwide, or to revisit and correct the history `written during the Clinton Administration'. One source said that any attempt to demonstrate that the Clinton Administration had manipulated intelligence in the Balkans, for example, in order to attack Yugoslavia would open some US officials up to legal attacks. In this regard, the US broadcasting network Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) also perpetuated what officials in the Balkans called `the Clinton/Soros line', in attempting to legitimize the actions of the former Clinton Administration."

    Okay, sorry. I didn't know.

FYI, I think the actual title of this article is "Regime Change, Inc." That's the title on the magazine cover.

"Peter Ackerman's Quest to Topple Tyranny" is the subtitle, I believe.

As far as I can tell, the Defense & Foreign Affairs Daily does not post its articles on the Web. However, if you want confirmation that this article really exists -- and if you don't have time to visit the public library to get it yourself via Nexis -- why don't you send a Freepmail to Darko and ask him to retrieve a copy of it for you? Judging by certain of Darko's past posts, he appears to have access to Defense & Foreign Affairs Daily.

    Verification of article
From Alexander Nevsky | 03/23/2005 8:33:16 AM PST replied

Lancer, back in December, you raised some questions about the authenticity of an article I had posted to FreeRepublic. The article came originally from a print journal called GIS/Defense & Foreign Affairs Daily, which unfortunately does not publish its articles on the Web. I had obtained a copy of the article from the Nexis database. At the time, I suggested that you freepmail Darko, who has posted articles from the same publication, and ask him to retrieve it for you. You responded, "Thanks for the Darko tip. I will freepmail him."

    http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1309815/posts?page=52#52

Lancer, I am just wondering if you ever followed through on this and managed to authenticate the article. The reason I ask is that another Freeper named Calpurnia [proper spelling: Calpernia] has now raised the same question about the same article, but I am at a loss to know how to satisfy her, since she does not appear willing to take any of the steps I suggested for authenticating it. Can you please tell me how things went with you and Darko?

    FRegards,
    Alexander Nevsky

…and to all FReepers and lurkers who may share an interest in the above-posted article written by Gregory R. Copley in the June 30, 2003 issue of GIS/Defense & Foreign Affairs Daily and titled, "Special Report: US State Dept., CIA War Against Pentagon Breaks Into the Open With Profound Impact on Strategic Policy" :

    Dear Friends:

In my view, this is an extremely important article which needs to be read and discussed by anyone concerned about the machinations of George Soros.

Unfortunately, GIS/Defense & Foreign Affairs Daily does not publish its articles on the Web. This thread on FreeRepublic is the only place on the Internet where people can view the entire text of this article.

For that reason, I feel obliged to address questions about the article's veracity which have been raised first by lancer on this thread and subsequently — on a different thread — by Calpernia.

I know the article is real because I retrieved it myself from the Nexis database. However, as Calpernia chides me, "We do not know you to trust you as a source."

Very well. So I must find a way to prove the article's authenticity to everyone's satisfaction here at FR. I confess that I'm not 100 percent sure how to accomplish that, but I will find a way.

In the meantime, just to let everyone know that I'm on the case, I have reproduced below — with lancer's kind permission — copies of our recent freepmail correspondence. Please stay tuned for further postings on this matter.

    FRegards,
    Alexander Nevsky

Please see the link for: Gregory R. Copley, http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1309815/posts?page=35 And look at the source, not there."

    Dear Calpernia:

You have made a misleading, groundless and frivolous accusation against me to the moderator. Please be good enough to retract it at once.

Anyone who goes to the page you cite above will find this explanation, posted by me, as to the source of the article in question - an extremely reputable online database which can be accessed by anyone at any public library, but which cannot be accessed from a hyperlink at FreeRepublic. It is a subscriber-only service.

Both posts of which you complain explain that the original article was published in GIS/Defense & Foreign Affairs Weekly. However, if you proceed to their Web site, you will find no link to the article in question, but only a solicitation to subscribe to the publication.

In short, I have provided you with every link that can possibly be provided in reference to this article.

Calpernia, I find it troubling that both times I posted this extremely important information to FreeRepublic, the discussion was quickly killed by people casting doubts on the article's veracity. This article is the only one I have so far encountered which lays out plainly and authoritatively the destructive nature of Soros' meddling in State Department and CIA affairs. Are you seriously suggesting that this topic must remain off limits for Freeper discussion until such time as the good folks at GIS/Defense & Foreign Affairs Weekly decide to change their business model and begin posting their articles online?

The first time I posted on this subject, a Freeper named Lancer effectively killed the discussion by questioning the article's veracity. This was disappointing, but I wrote it off as a random spasm of overzealousness on Lancer's part. Now the same thing has happened a second time, and I am no longer willing to just shrug it off.

Three months have passed since I posted not one but two simple suggestions as to how any curious Freeper could authenticate this article (1. Retrieve it from the Lexis database at your public library, 2) Freepmail Darko, who has also posted articles from the same publication, and ask him to retrieve the article for you).

Has anyone bothered taking either of these two steps? Have you? And, if not, why not?

Calpernia, I am not well-versed in every rule and regulation governing Freepdom, but your implication that every post here must be accompanied by a link to the original source strikes me as unreasonable and counterproductive. If enforced, such a requirement would deprive Freepers of one of the most important resources this Web site provides – access to texts which have not been published online.

Inasmuch as you have seen fit to report me to the moderator, I am left with no choice but to insist that you respond to me at once, on this thread, either justifying your accusation or publicly retracting it.

    FRegards

Contrary to the misleading impression given by Norman Lear's All in the Family, most Archie Bunker types in New York City are Democrats, though they will vote Republican in specific instances without much prodding.

The big problem with New York State is low voter turnout. Republicans tend to think they are so hopelessly outnumbered that voting is a waste of time. But they are wrong.

People forget that Ronald Reagan carried New York State twice.

SEIU and AFSCME are the fastest-growing trade unions in the USA and the largest union contributors to Soros' 527 network during the 2004 election. They have nationwide reach. Their racket is "organizing" government workers. See this article:

Right to work laws are important, but the fastest-growing unions today draw their membership from government payrolls, and the government sets its own rules regarding employment. Public-sector unions such as SEIU and AFSCME now control organized labor.
