Fascinating pictures of America's famous WW2 Black Sheep Squadron whose efforts helped win the war in the Pacific have been released in vibrant color. The series shows the squadron's commanding officer, Colonel Gregory 'Pappy' Boyington who received the Medal of Honour and the Navy Cross, briefing his men on strategy and tactics before the 17 October 1943 attack on Kahili airdrome at Bougainville island, Papua New Guinea. In this raid 'Pappy' and 24 fighters circled the field where 60 enemy aircraft were based to goad them into sending a large force. In the ensuing air battle, 20 enemy aircraft were...

<p>The trashing of the idea of commemorating the great Marine Fighter Pilot, Greg "Pappy" Boyington, a Congressional Medal of Honor winner, by the student leadership of his alma mater, the University of Washington, is nasty and ignorant.</p>
<p>A student leader proclaims she "didn't believe a member of the Marine Corps was an example of the sort of person UW wanted to produce." Another complains "many monuments at UW already commemorate rich white men."</p>

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The state Senate has passed a resolution to honor World War II hero Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, just weeks after the University of Washington student Senate shot down a measure to honor the UW alumnus. Sen. Luke Esser, also a UW graduate, proposed the measure after what he deemed an "unfortunate" incident at his old school. "He was one of the most heroic fighter pilots in American history," said Esser, R-Bellevue. "Being a guy from UW, I'm proud of Huskies that go on to achieve great things." The student Senate triggered a firestorm three weeks ago after rejecting...

It sounds like the University of Washington student Senate is struggling to make some progress. After turning down a memorial to a notorious World War II Congressional Medal of Honor awardee, alum "Pappy" Boyington, they are now considering a more general memorial. At least this time they are getting it all wrong in a different way. The real problem seems to be the students' "carefully taught" inclination to "massification" -- the tendency of liberal institutions, in the nocturnal twilight of Marxist collectivism, to insist on memorials to classes of people, not individuals. The kiddie Senate is now trying to figure...

I am an independent journalist who just got a good laugh over the latest "courageous stance" adopted by your student senate. Growing up in Oregon, I was always puzzled by why the lovely neighboring state of Washington seemed so heavily influenced by what I thought was a lunatic fringe. On the one hand William Gates and his baby boy Bill had produced two obscene monopolies, Boeing and Microsoft, and on the other your assorted elected officials seemed more at home in 1960s Communist Albania than the Wobblies "One Big Union" of sainted memory in the Northwest. Now I know what...

His name was Gregory Boyington. Some called him "Pappy." He served as a combat pilot in World War II with the 1st Squadron, American Volunteer Group. This squadron was known as the Flying Tigers of China. Boyington later served as a combat pilot for the U.S. Marine Corps. He commanded Marine Fighting Squadron 214. Perhaps you've heard of this squadron. It was called the Black Sheep Squadron and was later featured in a TV series called "Baa Baa, Black Sheep." Boyington shot down 26 Japanese aircraft while serving in the Pacific. He was later shot down and spent 20 months...

Member of Marines not 'sort of person UW wanted to produce'The University of Washington's student senate rejected a memorial for alumnus Gregory "Pappy" Boyington of "Black Sheep Squadron" fame amid concerns a military hero who shot down enemy planes was not the right kind of person to represent the school. Student senator Jill Edwards, according to minutes of the student government's meeting last week, said she "didn't believe a member of the Marine Corps was an example of the sort of person UW wanted to produce."

R-12-18 A Resolution to Calling for a Tribute for Col. Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, USMC Andrew Everett, sponsor of the legislation, summarized the resolution. He said he wasn’t interested in a large statue, but rather something on a small scale. Jill Edwards moved to table the resolution until next meeting. Seconded. Objection. Jill Edwards said other legislation needed to be considered as other resolutions have been on the docket longer. Mikhail Smirnoff said he didn’t see the issue as controversial and that because Senate had voted it to the top of the agenda it should be considered immediately. The motion failed....

We don't need to honor any more rich white males So says one member of the University of Washington Student Senate. Gregory Pappy Boyington...graduate of the Univeristy of Washington (went to High School in Tacoma), winner of the medal of honor, shot down 28 enemy aircraft, was a prisoner of war for 20 months, and apparently does not - according to the student senate - deserve a memorial on campus. Apparently we are told that he "is not the type of person we want to honor" and some even went so far as to liken his duty in WW2 to...
