The bombs were identical in size and design: one in a black nylon duffel bag, the other in a black knapsack with grayish trim. Each was made of 10 kilos of powerful commercial explosives - essentially sawdust soaked in nitroglycerine - with nuts and bolts for shrapnel. Left on seats in a commuter rail car, they were detonated almost simultaneously using cellphones. The explosions ripped into the steel, plastic and fiberglass, sending a deadly shock wave through the passenger compartment and hurtling twisted chunks of metal, debris and tiny bits of the bombs hundreds of feet in every direction. Almost...

THE man accused of supplying the dynamite used in the al-Qaeda train bombings in Madrid was in possession of the private telephone number of the head of Spain’s Civil Guard bomb squad, it emerged yesterday. The revelation has raised fresh concerns in Madrid about links between those held responsible for the March bombings, which killed 190 people, and Spain’s security services, and shortcomings in the police investigation. Señor Suárez Trashorras and...

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Jan. 12 — The four police officers were squeezed into a small pickup truck, screaming down the highway from Baghdad at 90 miles an hour toward a bomb sighting, and they were happy. They thrive on busy days, and today, the third call of the morning for the Baghdad police bomb squad had come in minutes before, at 11:20, with the usual sketchy information: possible explosives on the road south to Salman Pak. For every bomb that kills Iraqis and coalition soldiers, many more are defused every day by the ordnance experts of the Baghdad police. The squad...

(CBS/AP) The FBI on Tuesday released photos of a metal collar found around the neck of a pizza deliveryman who robbed a bank and then was killed when a bomb strapped to his body exploded. FBI Agent Bob Rudge said the bureau hopes that by releasing the photos of the collar and locking device, someone may come forward to help law enforcement solve the strange case. A preliminary exam performed on the collar showed that it was likely not commercially manufactured, Rudge said Tuesday. "We do not believe it has any legitimate industrial use," said Rudge. JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Bomb disposal experts may soon have an alternative to their hazardous hands-on duties, thanks to a laser detector under development at Israel's nuclear research center. The instrument uses a laser beam's ultra-violet spectrum to "light up" molecules in fumes given off by TNT explosives from a distance of eight feet, a spokesman at Nahal Soreq said Wednesday. "This project was launched in the 1990s to contend with the threat of terrorist smugglers on our borders," the spokesman said of the prototype, for which no marketing date has been set. "The benefits to the wider world post-Sept. 11...
