Pipe bomber hits bio lab: Feds probe attack in Watertown By Casey Ross, Jennifer Rosinski and Tom Farmer Friday, August 27, 2004
A pipe bomb ripped through a biotech research lab in Watertown early yesterday, igniting fears of terrorism as federal agents combed through the debris in a search for evidence, law enforcement sources said.
The bomb exploded in the darkened lab of Amaranth Bio Inc. at 3:40 a.m., blasting out windows from floor to ceiling in a Pleasant Street office building that houses a half-dozen companies.
``There's no reason to believe it's a terrorist act, but there is reason to believe that someone wanted to do harm to that company,'' said a source familiar with the investigation. ``They have information that might lead them to someone they want to talk to.''
No one was injured in the explosion, but law enforcement officials said the bomb caused extensive damage to the laboratory. Amaranth Bio, which moved to Watertown less than six months ago, is involved in cutting-edge cell research focused on organ regeneration.
Police and federal officials would not discuss possible motives for the bombing, but a source said officials have recovered several parts of the bomb and believe the bomber had a beef with the company or the focus of its research.
Agents with the FBI and the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms combed the perimeter of the building yesterday. The agents cut down bushes all along the office building to dig through soil and shattered glass for evidence.
Watertown police Chief Ed Deveau said investigators are interviewing employees to determine who was the last to leave before the explosion ripped through the building, which also housed pharmaceutical and food processing companies. No one was in the laboratory when the bomb went off, he said.
Amaranth Bio, founded by a group of scientists accomplished in the field of cell therapy, uses cells derived from adult tissues to develop regenerative therapies for diabetes and metabolic liver disorders, a company Web site says.
Anti Stem Cell research terrorists?
Probably just people trying to liberate fluffy animals by throwing bombs at them :)
In NYC, one police officer hurt, and arrests have been made. Naked against debt broke some sign and the officer got cut by the glass?
The left is going insane. I'll be surprised if this wasn't ELF, and I'd be surprised if this were the last left wing or Islamic attack we hear about before (even after) Bush's reelection..
Boston huh..Hmm Maybe just picked "any bio lab" at random to see what Law Enforcement does?
Not a Christian group. Adult cell systems are advocated by them.
LOL, and that, too.
bump for later
Sure it does. Destroy property when no one is around. Genetic experimentation work? Like genetic food?
Islamic terrorists are after mass causalities and bio weapons.
This could be SHAC an animal rights group often mentioned with ELF and ALF. Pipes bombs and a biotec target are right up their MO.
The Unabomber has an admirer.
The Unabomber wanted to kill people, the target here seems to be property, timed when no one would be there.
Oh, a terrorist with a conscience. That's reassuring.
