Marxist rebels in Colombia have killed ten hostages, after the army bungled a helicopter mission to rescue them. The captives, including Governor Guillermo Gaviria and former Defence Minister Gilberto Echeverri, were killed as Government soldiers approached the rebel camp where they were being held. President Alvaro Uribe confirmed that one hostage escaped unharmed and two others survived but were wounded. No rebels were captured or killed in the failed rescue operation.
