Marxist rebels in Colombia have killed ten hostages, after the army bungled a helicopter mission to rescue them. The captives, including Governor Guillermo Gaviria and former Defence Minister Gilberto Echeverri, were killed as Government soldiers approached the rebel camp where they were being held. President Alvaro Uribe confirmed that one hostage escaped unharmed and two others survived but were wounded. No rebels were captured or killed in the failed rescue operation. Gaviria and Echeverri were kidnapped on April 21, 2002, as they led hundreds of peace marchers from Medellin to the village of Caicedo to meet with the rebel commanders....

Yuri Gottesman spent his summer volunteering in Israel this year, but instead of picking oranges on a kibbutz, he slept in a terrorist’s house that was scheduled for demolition and cleared roadblocks that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) had set up to hinder the passage of terrorists. "I decided that I really needed to be in Palestine in solidarity with the Palestinians," said the 24-year-old Jewish San Franciscan of his reasons for going to Israel. Gottesman is a member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a motley group of activists from around the world that converge in the West Bank...

The Northern Ireland law firm which represents most of the families of the Bloody Sunday victims is mounting a multi-million pound lawsuit against US soldiers over alleged war crimes in Iraq. Solicitors at Madden and Finucane will seek damages of $15 million (£10 million) in American courts after four members of an Iraqi family were shot dead at a checkpoint in Baghdad last month. Three representatives from the firm, which was founded by Pat Finucane, the Belfast solicitor shot dead by loyalists in 1989 in one of the most controversial shootings of the Northern Ireland troubles, have visited the Iraqi...

Statement of John Kerry to US Senate April 1971: "We are not best and brightest" & "There is no Communist threat" HOW DO YOU ASK A MAN TO BE THE LAST MAN TO DIE FOR A MISTAKE From John Kerry's statement before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, April 22, 1971. I would like to say for the record, and for the men behind me who are also wearing the uniform and their medals, that my being here is really symbolic. I am not here as John Kerry, but as one member of a group of one thousand, which in...

How to identify the political left? Current usage refers to everyone left of center as "liberal." Yet what are currently identified liberals liberal about except hard drugs and sex? In regard to everything else, they are determined to intervene, regulate and control your life, or redistribute your income. Obviously, when terror-hugging radicals like Ramsey Clark and Communist hacks like Angela Davis are referred to as "liberals" – as they routinely are – the obfuscation works to their advantage and against the interests of veracity and democracy. The term "liberal" should be reserved for those who occupy the center of the...

(CNSNews.com) - The sponsors of at least two different websites chronicling the anti-war statements and activities of Hollywood celebrities, say they're being inundated with death threats from "anti-war pacifist" supporters of the celebrities. The sponsor of one of the sites, who would only identify himself as Tim C., said he has received nearly 100 death threats since starting www.famousidiot.com less than two months ago. Tim's mother and wife want him to stop exposing Hollywood's liberal activists out of fear for his personal safety. "If they are anti-war pacifists, they're the most violent people I have ever met in my life....

Glad to hear that George Bush is still lukewarm on the United Nations. It appears that the age of bending over for this crowd of quasi-legitimate, whining third-rate bullies is fast drawing to a close. The sooner the better, for the Third World especially, since you and I can dodge the UN quite well thanks. So to George W., I say, let them hand out food and organize medical aid. Anything else? You do it, you're competent. And for heaven's sake, if there are Canadians begging to be included, like I don't know, say, Stephen Lewis, how about a nice...

(Excerpts from the Washington Post) A few months ago, Jay Garner was leading a quiet and very comfortable life in an upscale Orlando suburb not far from Disney World. Today, the retired three-star general has one of the most high-profile jobs in the world: launching the U.S. attempt to rebuild Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Named by the Pentagon to head reconstruction efforts in Iraq, the former military troubleshooter won high marks for running a very successful humanitarian relief operation in northern Iraq after the 1991 Persian Gulf War. But he has also stirred controversy, particularly in the...

The man was reportedly standing in between Israeli troops and a group of Palestinian children when soldiers opened fire, said Khalil Abdullah, an activist with the pro-Palestinian group. The IDF had no immediate comment. "A group of ISM people were trying to set up a small protest tent alongside a road used by the army. The soldiers opened fire," said Abdullah who...

Also, she notes huge discrepancies in the different versions of the story being reported.        The news that a senior Islamic Jihad terrorist, Shadi Sukiya, was captured by an elite anti-terror unit of the Israel Defense Forces while hiding out in the Jenin offices of the International Solidarity...

AP) A prank caller devastated the Flagstaff family of a 22-year-old soldier serving in Iraq, falsely telling them that the man was dead. On Sunday morning, a man called the home of Wayne Hogg's uncle and said "we need to let you know Wayne died two days ago." The report was false, but it turned into a nightmare for Hogg's family. His uncle, Danny Hogg, says it took the family a full day to get confirmation that Wayne was still alive in Iraq. Danny Hogg had participated Saturday in a Flagstaff rally to support U.S. troops in Iraq. Sunday morning,...

Legitimate, important, valid or even extreme and hyperbolic arguments before a war are one thing. But they have a different salience when they are made during a war -- especially one that has barely even begun. There are already polling suggestions that the...
