America fascinated me as America fascinates every newcomer. Nineteen years old and fleeing the study of medicine at my Nigerian university, I longed to be a writer, to live a life of the mind. From my first days, I watched and read and learned. I was struck by the excess and the newness of America, by its flagrant contradictions, but mostly by how identity as an idea shaped so much of American life....... Shortly after the Black American George Floyd was murdered by a White police officer, a woman told me she had just read Americanah. “You are a prophet;...

WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes made headlines earlier this month when she inaccurately stated that Caitlin Clark needed five seasons to break Kelsey Plum's all-time scoring record. “If Kelsey Plum set that record in four years, well, Caitlin should’ve broke that record in four years,” Swoopes said. “But because there’s a COVID year, and then there’s another year, you know what I mean? So she’s already had an extra year to break that record. So, is it truly a broken record? I don’t know. I don’t think so. But yeah, that’ll go in the record books. And, I don’t think it...

The University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, has launched a segregated pool activity called “Black Folx Swim,” which expressly excludes participation by non-black swimmers. “The aim is to get more Black Folx into a space where they haven’t always been welcomed, while providing them the opportunity to learn swimming skills,” the school’s website states. Swimming lessons are taught exclusively by “experienced black swimmers/instructors,” the site adds, noting that the segregated pool time “is dedicated to building a better relationship with water for the Black community.”

Tennessee Rep. Gloria Johnson (D) said Tuesday on “CNN This Morning” that she hears racist statements “all the time” in the Tennessee State House. Johnson said racism was the reason her two black colleagues, Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were expelled, and she was spared. Co-host Don Lemon said, “You’ve been very in front after the vote last week that you felt race played a role in Jones and Pearson’s removal. But there are some of your Republican colleagues were saying in their estimation that it wasn’t race. That you argued, your attorney argued to the contrary that you...

A Belgian journalist deemed “too white” to interview far-left African-American essayist Angela Davis, required police protection after receiving serious threats from activists. Journalist Safia Kessas interviewed Angela Davis earlier this week at the National Theatre in Brussels and had to be placed under police protection during the event due to the number of threats she had received as activists claimed she was “too white” to interview the black writer. Activists were allegedly angry that Kessas was chosen to interview Davis because, despite being part Algerian in her background, she was not black herself. “As Black and queer activists, we strongly...

The brother of former first lady Michelle Obama, and his wife are suing the University School of Milwaukee, alleging that administrators expelled their two sons after they complained of racist bias during virtual lessons. They also claim that teachers were inconsiderate to a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds. The complaint alleges that the school retaliated against their family - whose kids are aged nine and 11 - after they submitted reports in January...

For Abbaro, dating in the Black community has still had its challenges. She remembers a hurtful incident from her college days. “I was talking to this Black guy [and he said], ‘Just so you know, I don’t date Black women. Black women are whack and I only date white girls,’” she recalls. Black women are often exoticized and fetishized. Being discriminated against can have major impacts on Black women’s mental and emotional health, as well as on their dating habits. In Murphy’s case, that early experience left a major mark on her psyche. “I mentally prepared myself for the rejection...

It’s All Good Bakery on Oakland's Martin Luther King Jr. Way looks like many bakeries in the area, offering up sweet potato pie and coconut pineapple cake. But recently, the small neighborhood storefront has become the center of controversy — namely because the building, which was the first headquarters of the Black Panther Party (BPP), might get demolished and rebuilt as a five-story, 20-unit mixed-use housing complex. On Monday evening, dozens of members of the public joined the Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board meeting to discuss the historical significance of the building. After the firm Gunkel Architects presented a mock-up of...

All 14 of Mississippi’s black, Democratic state senators refused to vote on a bill banning the teaching of critical race theory in the state’s public schools, walking out in protest instead. “This bill is not morally right,” Democratic Sen. Barbara Blackmon of Canton said during the debate ahead of the Friday vote before joining the walkout. Senate Bill 2113 passed 32-2 in the GOP-controlled chamber, with the only votes against it coming from two white Democrats. It will move to the state’s lower House, which is also controlled by Republicans, for review.

The bill later passed passed 32-2, with only two Democratic legislators - David Blount and Hob Bryan, both white - voting against it. It now heads to the Mississippi state House for approval. The unprecedented walkout on Friday followed a two-hour debate when Democratic lawmakers asked whether or not Critical Race Theory (CRT), which centers on the idea that racism...

SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose police on Wednesday announced the arrest of six men who allegedly committed dozens of robberies, burglaries and thefts since last year, including many that targeted people of Asian descent. The suspects have been charged for more than 70 cases that occurred between October 2020 and this September, and hate crime enhancements have been added because the men frequently targeted Asian women, some of whom ended up injured in robberies, police said.

What is a hate crime? A hate crime is a “criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity.” What are the effects of hate crimes? People victimized by violent hate crimes are likely to experience more psychological distress than victims of other violent crimes. Specifically, victims of crimes that are bias-motivated are more likely to experience post-traumatic stress, safety concerns, depression, anxiety, and anger than victims of crimes that are not motivated by bias. So far our mainstream media...

In the latest developments in an ongoing controversy at Linfield University over the firing of a tenured Jewish professor who accused the school of anti-Semitism, a report from the local branch of the NAACP found that the Oregon school’s president was subjected to racism at the school. In addition, the school’s president, Miles K. Davis, told the Chronicle of Higher Education that he had in fact made a comment about the size of Jewish noses to Daniel Pollack-Pelzner, the professor who was fired this week. Davis had previously denied making the comment, and an investigation into him had concluded based...
