John Perry Barlow was an eclectic character who led an eclectic life. He began life in a devout Mormon family in Wyoming, found himself writing lyrics for the cult favorite Greatful Dead rock band in his adulthood, and ended life as an outspoken co-founder and contributor to his Cyberspace freedom organization, the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Barlow's health suffered, considerably, in his later life. He faced several "debilitating health conditions" prior to and following a nearly fatal heart attack in May of 2015. His poor health was no secret: In October of 2016, a "Wellness fund" was established in his name...

As someone who spent the past 27 years working with him at EFF, I can say that nothing could be further from the truth. Barlow knew that new technology could create and empower evil as much as it could create and empower good. He made...
  • White mercenaries have Boko Haram on run

They’re Nigeria’s unlikely saviors – most being white, in their 50s and 60s and combat veterans of the former South African apartheid regime. But, tainted resumes notwithstanding, they’ve been getting the job done in northern Nigeria, hitting the Islamist terror group Boko Haram hard enough to send the jihadists into retreat, liberating dozens of villages and freeing hundreds of women and girls held as slaves and “bush wives” during a six-year-long reign of terror, reported London Telegraph. Boko Haram recently pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS. In recent years, Boko Haram has slaughtered entire...

ELDORADO, Texas (AP) -- A 50-year-old member of a polygamist sect whose alleged abuse of a teenage girl triggered the raid on a West Texas religious compound is no longer wanted by state authorities, officials said Friday. But authorities did not say when or why the arrest warrant was dropped for Dale E. Barlow, who at one time was thought to be the husband of a 16-year-old member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The teenage girl claimed she was beaten and raped at the church's Eldorado ranch in a hushed call made to a...
  • Australian anger over Singapore hanging

Time is running out for 25-year-old Australian drug trafficker Nguyen Tuong Van, who is due to be executed at Singapore's Changi prison on Friday. His death sentence has sparked widespread criticism in Australia. The Canberra government has repeatedly pleaded for clemency, as have lawyers, trade unions and church groups. But Singapore remains unmoved, and insists the hanging will go ahead as planned. "People have been praying for a change of heart," said Father Peter Norden, a friend of Kim Nguyen, the condemned man's mother. "They want the Singapore government to change its heart from one of stone to a heart...
