You fire up your computer and want to watch some clips of yesterday's game. You go to your favorite sports Web site, but pages are taking forever to load. Maybe you stick with it. More likely, however, you run out of patience and surf to another site to see if its video clips download any faster. Lo and behold, they do. The next time you're after some football highlights, the same thing happens. After a while, I bet you'd stop even trying your now ex-favorite sports site. We've all encountered slowdowns at our favorite Web sites, much like highway traffic...

April 15, 2005OP-ED COLUMNISTBush Disarms, Unilaterally By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN ne of the things that I can't figure out about the Bush team is why an administration that is so focused on projecting U.S. military strength abroad has taken such little interest in America's economic competitiveness at home - the underlying engine of our strength. At a time when the global economic playing field is being flattened - enabling young Indians and Chinese to collaborate and compete with Americans more than ever before - this administration is off on an ideological jag. It is trying to take apart the...

While cable operators now usually transmit broadband at 3 million bits per second, a download of "a billion bits per second is completely doable," says Comcast Corp chief executive Brian Roberts. The speed with which data moves around the Internet could jump more than 1,000 percent with the approval by a Colorado group of a new cable standard. The industry's standard-settings unit, CableLabs, plans to endorse this month technology that will let operators boost speeds from 400 percent to 1,600 percent over existing lines, USA Today said Wednesday. Motorola and Cisco are among the companies offering alternative methods to increase broadband...

Comcast next week is expected to announce plans to raise its broadband Internet speeds for all customers by at least a third later this year, according to sources familiar with the plans. The nation's largest cable company and broadband provider will raise its current speed of up to 3mbps (megabits per second) downstream and 256kbps (kilobits per second) upstream to 4mbps and 384kbps, respectively, at no additional cost. Comcast will also offer its more expensive 4mbps customers a 50 percent increase to 6mbps downstream and 768kbps upstream, the sources said. Comcast has upgraded its speed as part of an overall...

I have a question for my fellow Freepers. As you all know, I run a website www.theconservativerepublican.com I have had some complaints about it opening up to slow, although it opens quicker than Drudge or WorldNetDaily. What ways can I improve the speed? Will investing in more bandwidth make the site any faster? Thanks Joe
