Once upon a time, American schools were something to be proud of, with high expectations and students who – by some accounts – graduated high school with what is now the equivalent of two years of college under their belts. Most schools were under local control and were highly responsive to parents. Today all that has changed. We rank 36th on the world stage. Authorities are investigating a reported shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Wednesday. Officers responded to the school at 5901 Pine Island Road for the reported shooting, Broward Sheriff's Office officials said. There were reports of victims, BSO officials said. Coral Springs Police tweeted that that people should stay away from the school due to an active police scene. No other information was known.

SWAMPSCOTT — An elementary school principal announced Tuesday that he is transgender and plans to start identifying and presenting himself as female. Stanley School Principal Tom Daniels made the announcement in a letter to members of the school community. He said he will begin using his middle name, Shannon. During the 2015-16 school year, there were 83,600 public elementary and secondary schools. Of those, 35,900 have a sworn law enforcement officer who “routinely” carries a gun. KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) - A worker at a mental health facility for boys has been charged in connection to a hidden camera found in a bathroom, according to deputies. The Kanawha County Sheriff's Office tells 13 News that David Franklin Kidd Jr., 44, of Belle, was arrested in June 2017. Kidd was employed at The Art of Three Rivers in Dunbar, a facility of boys with mental disabilities and was a classroom aide for Kanawha County Schools.
