Pvt. Chelsea Manning, the transgender soldier convicted of giving classified government materials to WikiLeaks, was released from a Kansas military prison early Wednesday after serving seven years of her 35-year sentence. The leak, which Manning said she provided "to show the true cost of war", is considered to be the largest of its kind in USA history. "Manning is statutorily entitled to medical care while on excess leave in an active duty status, pending final appellate review", said Foster, the Army spokesman. "I am looking forward to so much!" said a statement released by Manning through her legal team, the...

The Army deployed 65 infantry divisions for the Second World War. Each was a small town with its own equivalents for community services within eight categories of combat arms. Units such as artillery, engineering, and heavy weapons engaged the enemy directly. Yet of all categories, the foot soldier faced the greatest hazard with the least chance of reward. These civilians become warriors confronted the most dismal fate of all whose duty was uninterrupted by missions completed or a fixed deployment time. The infantryman was enveloped within a most deranged, barbaric, and brittle existence against a resolute enemy where victory often...

What's old is new again as Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey pushes ahead on bringing back a vintage uniform. The Army's top enlisted soldier is heading to the next uniform board meeting, armed with the results of an exclusive Army Times survey, to make the case for bringing back an iconic, World War II era uniform for everyday business wear, he told Army Times in an interview this week. "That was the uniform of the 'Greatest Generation.' There was a lot of prestige and honor associated with that. The American public identified with that uniform," he said. "We...

The seemingly endless saga of convicted traitor Chelsea Manning (formerly Bradley) is moving into its next phase. After serving only a handful of the 35 years he was supposed to do for espionage, he had his sentence somewhat infamously commuted by Barack Obama and will be getting out of the slammer next week. In advance of his freedom, Manning is already busy putting out press releases and the first isn’t particularly newsworthy. (Associated Press) Chelsea Manning, who is scheduled to be released from prison next week, thanked former President Barack Obama, who granted her clemency in the final days of...

President Donald Trump's choice for Army secretary announced Friday that he is withdrawing his name from consideration. "It is with deep regret today I am withdrawing my nomination to be the Secretary of the Army," Mark Green said in a statement. On Tuesday, CNN reported that the nomination was in serious jeopardy, and he could be withdrawing as soon as this week, three sources familiar with the matter told CNN. The decision by Green, Trump's second pick for the post, came after his nomination ran into trouble following a backlash after past controversial statements on LGBT issues, Islam and evolution...

SIERRA VISTA – At 18 years old, Buena High School senior Adrian Garlant is living his dream. The Buena High School senior recently received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. Garlant says he’s been dreaming of attending West Point Military Academy since the sixth grade. His mother Elizabeth Clark remembers the day he announced his plan. “They must have had career day or something, because he came in the door and said, ‘Mom, I’m going to West Point when I grow up’,” Clark recalls. “I said, ‘Do you know how hard that is?’” Clark...

Yesterday was a trying day. The kids woke up early and it was early release. The laptop wasn’t working and I really didn’t want to do anything. And then, midway through my afternoon, the local wives’ page started hopping. You see, clothing store Forever 21 has some new products for sale. . . the military wives just couldn’t believe their eyes. You’re not going to believe it–and you’re probably not going to run to the store, either. Here’s a peek...

The U.S. military started moving parts of its controversial THAAD anti-missile defense system to a deployment site in South Korea on Wednesday amid high tensions over North Korea's missile and nuclear programs. The earlier-than-expected move prompted protests by hundreds of local residents and was denounced by the frontrunner in South Korea's presidential election on May 9. A spokesman for Moon Jae-in said the decision "ignored public opinion and due process" and demanded the deployment be suspended until the next administration was in place and had made its policy decision. The United States and South Korea last year agreed to deploy...

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited Walter Reed Medical Center on Saturday, where the President awarded the Purple Heart to a wounded soldier. Barrientos’ wife, Tammy, was present for the short ceremony. “When I heard about this, I wanted to do this myself,” Trump said as he placed the Purple Heart on the soldier’s lapel. “Congratulations. Tremendous.” The Purple Heart is awarded to American service members who are wounded or killed in combat. Barrientos was recently...

U.S. President Donald Trump has selected a Christian conservative and ex U.S. Army flight surgeon Mark Green to succeed former "out" homosexual U.S. Army Secretary Eric Fanning. Ex-Army officer and West Point alumnus Mark Green is said to be Trump's top nominee for the post that is currently held by Fanning, reported The Tennesean. Green was part of the Army's special operations team that took former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein in 2003. He left the Army in 2006 and went to build and become CEO of AlignMD, a medical staffing firm until 2016 when it was acquired by American Physician...

On the heels of the Marine Corps' desire for a new rifle for its infantrymen, the U.S. Army now says it is contemplating a dramatic switch in rifles. The service is considering going back to battle rifles—heavier rifles that can hit targets at longer ranges. The last time the Army fielded such a rifle was in the 1960s.

MISSOULA - Captain (Chaplain) Matthew Christensen, a 1992 graduate of Flathead High School, was awarded the Soldier's Medal last week for his actions that resulted in saving the lives of two soldiers. When Christensen went to counsel a soldier who was having a hard time, he didn’t realize it would escalate into a dangerous hostage situation. Christensen spent much of the night counseling the soldier. Later, the soldier's roommate and another chaplain showed up at the barracks. Things got worse. The soldier called some family members, cursing them for abusive situations in the past. Christensen said, "And then he just...

HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Army soldiers finished wading across a stream in a rainforest in Hawaii, and they were soaked. Their boots and socks were water-logged and their clothes, hair and ears were caked with mud. The soldiers were going through training at the first jungle school the Army has established in decades. The course is part of a program to train soldiers for exercises and potential combat on terrain that looks more like islands and nations in the Pacific than arid Afghanistan and the deserts of the Middle East. Brig. Gen. Stephen Michael, deputy commander of the 25th...

The US has declared it will permanently station missile-capable drones in South Korea in the latest round of military escalation in north-eastern Asia. The drone deployment comes a week after North Korea carried out a test salvo of four missiles that landed off the coast of Japan, and a day before the US secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, embarks on a tour of a region widely regarded as the most dangerous corner of the world. The US military in South Korea took the unusual step of publicly announcing the deployment of a company of Grey Eagle drones, which it said...

The U.S. military is sending an additional 2,500 ground combat troops to a staging base in Kuwait from which they could be called upon to back up coalition forces battling the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. The deployment will include elements of the 82nd Airborne Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team, which is based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. About 1,700 soldiers from the same unit are overseas now, spread between Iraq and Kuwait.

Disclaimer: this should not be read as not wanting more Rogue One-type movies; we need more Star Wars films like this. Also: SPOILERS. There’s a common phrase that you’re apt to hear in discussions on Army readiness: “No more Task Force Smiths.” For reference, Task Force Smith was a rapidly cobbled together unit of infantry and artillery that was shipped to Korea in the opening phase of the Korean War. Intended to show the North Koreans that America wasn’t messing around, TF Smith instead demonstrated that the U.S. Army had completely misread the resolve of the North Koreans. TF Smith...
