What's old is new again as Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey pushes ahead on bringing back a vintage uniform.
The Army's top enlisted soldier is heading to the next uniform board meeting, armed with the results of an exclusive Army Times survey, to make the case for bringing back an iconic, World War II era uniform for everyday business wear, he told Army Times in an interview this week.
"That was the uniform of the 'Greatest Generation.' There was a lot of prestige and honor associated with that. The American public identified with that uniform," he said. "We think that is more appropriate than trying to create something new."
The board made up of leadership from across the Army, as well as a couple junior enlisted soldiers is set to meet later this month, Dailey said.
Their recommendations will go to Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley and acting Army Secretary Bob Speer for final approval, which would involve a change to the clothing bag, and therefore an update to the clothing allowance.

Until some changes are made from the very top, I would suggest something bright, and smart, and unisex.
Here’s the survey result w/ photo for anyone too young to remember what the uniform looked like: https://www.armytimes.com/articles/exclusive-army-times-survey-most-soldiers-support-the-return-of-iconic-pinks-and-greens-uniform
Looked at the pix of Ike and his general entourage.
Where is this pink they speak of?
I do miss the khaki uniform.
Looked pretty sharp with my corporal stripes, bloused boots and beret.
The lighter color pants. Had a slight “pink” look when worn with the darker jacket.
IIRC that was only for the officers while the enlisted wore the standard wool uniform and coat with tie.
I liked khakis too, much better than the dress greens. I still have my original issue from 1979. It seems they have shrunk considerably over the years.
My Dad was in WWII; he had the pinks and green. “Pink” referred to the rose colored pants.
Who knows - maybe if our Army dressed more like Ike and Patton they’d act more like Ike and Patton.
We haven’t won a war since WWII. I’ve served in Viet Nam (when I came home we were winning), and my son has served in Afghanistan.
I had the same reaction. Looks more like dark green jacket and tan pants to me.
“They look real pretty general, but can they fight ?”
I have my dads’ Picks and Greens uniform complete with Sam Brown belt hanging in my closet.
I don’t get it either.
The PC military wants to bring back the iconic uniforms to debase our WW2 “greatest generation” vets with fairies prancing around in their uniforms.
If this is what it takes to stop them from wearing their field uniforms to the mall, etc., I’m all for it, especially since so many of them wear their BDUs to hide their fat-bodies.
If this is what the SMA has his schedule full of, clothing design, I think we need to do away the office of the SMA. It seems that every SMA spends most of his tenure figuring out how to part soldiers with more of their meager and hard earned pay via new or now “retro” uniforms.
I want an SMA who looks at training and quality of life of enlisted troopers and makes it a) easier for them to do their jobs by providing the right tools and proper training, and b) insulates them from the BS and PC minutiae of the officers and congress well meaning but useless programming.
SGMs and the SMA need to be burrs in the saddles of the powers that be, to hold them to the bottom line- can their warriors fight and won anywhere, anytime and against any foe.
New uniforms do not need to be part of any thing that gets in the way of the heavy lifting our boys need to do.
And yes, I intentionally omit the girls.
(Former enlisted PVT- SSG, Infantry, Airborne, Light and Mech)
Green fatigues, camouflage for deployment.
And most importantly, head to toe... MALE IN USA! Current uniform stockpiles are not all made here.
Made.... made in USA
I hate auto correct... it changes spellings on the fly!
Get rid of the “berets for all”. The black beret was something that was earned. Now it is a participation trophy.
I always liked the “Ike Jacket”. I wish they’d bring back the old “steel pot” helmet too. What we have now looks too “German”.
It is the quality of the person inside the uniform that counts.
