MRMOVES - I was reading one of the questions in the faq where one person asks.... JOHN - "Asks whether President Hinckley contradicts Joseph Smith's concept about God once being a man" At one point you answer... President Hinckley could not say that we believe God was once a man like us, because it has never been identified as official Church doctrine... I was reading the book, " Preparing for a celestial marriage" where it bluntly talks about that God was once a man and that he was once like us, and I know that is a approved Church Manual....

Robert L. Millet, “The Ancient Covenant Restored,” Ensign, Mar 1998, 36 The Prophet Joseph Smith and the promises made to the fathers.Filled with inspiration and insight, the book of Genesis offers timely and timeless lessons on almost every page—painful and joyous lessons from the lives of men and women of the past. Moses—the Lord’s lawgiver, the author of the Pentateuch—constructed his scriptural narrative in such a way as to lead the reader quickly through the Creation, the Fall, the Flood, and the scattering of the nations through the confounding of tongues. By the time we have covered 10...

An introductory page of the Doctrine and Covenants contains this statement about Joseph Smith: "He was taught by many angels; ... God had a special work for him to do" ("Explanatory Introduction," fourth paragraph). If there have ever been prophets whom we might dare to call ordinary or typical, Joseph was certainly not one of them. Though he was tutored in quiet and subtle ways, as countless others have been, he was also groomed by open ministering from "many" heavenly beings over a period of years. It is fair to ask: Why were such unusual preparations focused upon Joseph? One...

Richard D. Draper, “Enoch: What Modern Scripture Teaches,” Ensign, Jan 1998, 29 Truth restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith sheds light on the ministry of a mighty biblical prophet.Three thousand years before the birth of Christ, the peace in which the people of the Lord had been living was broken as fierce enemies moved against them. History does not record the reason for the hatred that drove the attacking army, but they seemed intent on exterminating these early Saints. The soldiers must have felt very confident as they marched in battle array toward the peaceful land. But instead of victory...

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. - Nietzsche This year's conference will be held October 9th–11th at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Salt Lake City. Visit the Exmormon Foundation website for more information and to make reservations. These conferences are a lot of fun and they're very educational. (I've attended the last two.) It's a full weekend packed with friendly and intelligent conversation, informative lectures,...

Latter-day Saints love the Bible and believe it as scripture. Indeed, Joseph Smith went so far as to say that we are the only people who truly believe it as it is written. Modern, sectarian Christians hang Bible verses like ornaments on an artificial tree constructed of man-made creeds, ignoring the passages which conflict with or contradict their doctrines. In the process, they have allowed a number of myths about the Bible to be promulgated because it serves their own ends. The following eight myths are summarized from "Here We Stand" by Joseph Fielding McConkie (1995, Deseret Book) McConkie is...

Official Mormon Statements about the Bible: The Mormon church teaches that the Bible has been corrupted and does not contain the fullness of the gospel. This is reflected in one of their Articles of Faith which states: "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly" (Pearl of Great Price). Joseph Smith stated: "it was apparent that many important points touching the salvation of men, had been taken from the Bible, or lost before it was compiled" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.10); "I believe the Bible as it read when...

The Angel Moroni atop the LDS Oquirrh Mountain Temple looks a bit worse for wear right now. Last Saturday, he got zapped by lightning. Witnesses reported a bright flash of light, a single B-flat note ending in a ducklike quack heard as far away as Idaho, followed by the usual self-congratulatory applause of thunder. A billion volts blasted the gold leaf off Moroni, turning his horn, face and arm black. In a program known as Regilding for the Dead, the LDS Church plans to fix him before the dedication in August. -SNIP- Friday evening, I was one of hundreds of...

LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson challenged church members to be "faithful guardians of our history" during the Saturday morning dedication of the newly completed Church History Library. "The church is as committed today as it ever was to preserve history," President Monson said during the 60-minute dedication service.-SNIP- Billed as a "state-of-the-art archival facility," the library is now home to a collection that includes 270,000 books, pamphlets, magazines and manuals; 500,000 historical photographs, posters and maps; 23,000 audio and video recordings; 120,000 local histories of church units; 150,000 journals, diaries, papers and manuscripts; 20,000 rolls of microfilm; and 3.5...

Book of Mormon Lesson 43: How Could Ye Have Departed from the Ways of the Lord? 9by Ted L. Gibbons QUOTE OF THE WEEK:“As I participated in the Mexico City Temple dedication, I received the distinct impression that God is not pleased with our neglect of the Book of Mormon. The object of studying the Book of Mormon is to learn from the experiences of those who have gone before us that blessings come by keeping the commandments of God and that tragedy is the result of disobedience. By learning from the lessons of the past, mistakes need not...

Over 180 years ago the American pioneer spirit wed the central tenants of Christianity, spent a few years baking in the religulous ferocity of the Second Great Awakening, and then out popped Mormonism. Lots of protestants were more than happy to slap the baby. It hacked out some early doctrinal flem, fled from foster home to foster home, until as a young adolescent Mormonism found itself on the doorstep of the Wasatch Front poised to make history. And make history Mormonism has. By which ever measure you choose, the LDS church is one of the fastest growing religions in the world,...

c. 2009 Salt Lake Tribune PROVO, Utah -- Tyson Boardman sits before the computer screen at the LDS Missionary Training Center, discussing Mormonism with Jason and Travis in two Internet conversations at the same time. Why do people say Mormons aren't Christian? What does it mean to be baptized for the dead? How do Mormons view Jesus? Why do you have a prophet? Answering these and many other Mormon-related queries is Boardman's full-time assignment as a two-year missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and he loves it. "I've had questions from Canada, England and every part...

Elder MARK E. PETERSON Race Problems -- As They Affect The ChurchConvention of Teachers of Religion on the College Level, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, August 27, 1954.God has commanded Israel not to intermarry. To go against this commandment of God would be in sin. Those who willfully sin with their eyes open to this wrong will not be surprised to find that they will be separated from the presence of God in the world to come. This is spiritual death.... The reason that one would lose his blessings by marrying a Negro is due to the restriction placed...

Brent Jeffs was one tired-out ex-Mormon fundamentalist last week in Denver, but still a man on a mission. Back-to-back book-signings and 17-hour days in Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Denver for Jeff's recently released memoir, "Lost Boy," alternately wound him up or wore him down to feeling like "a zombie," he said. Jeffs juggles a day job with Ultradent dental products with a personal quest. Brent, the 26-year-old nephew of Warren Jeffs, the convicted felon and former prophet of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, is determined to make known the extent of what he describes...

A Closer Look At Stephen Covey And His 7 Habitsby Bill Gordon, Interfaith Witness Department Link Home Mission Board, SBCOne of the most popular personal development training programs today is The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. Many church and religious organizations are using this program to train ministers and leaders. One of the reasons they find this program attractive is because it gives a prominent place to spirituality in personal growth. However, most of those who take this training are unaware of the specific religious beliefs that are behind many of Covey’s principles.Covey has...

Secret Combinations: Selected Quotes from modern day Prophets and Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints compiled by Steven Montgomery After speaking about the dangers of Communism, President David O. McKay then gave this warning, "Latter-day Saints should have nothing to do with secret combinations and groups antagonistic to the constitutional law of the land." (David O. McKay, Conference Report, Oct 1939) "The ancient Prophet Moroni saw our day, who can doubt that he had in mind the evils of godless communism when he gave this solemn warning: "Wherefore, O ye Gentiles, it is wisdom in...

SOUTH JORDAN -- There were some 6,000 to 8,000 lightning strikes in the Salt Lake Valley Saturday, and it appears one of them struck the new Oquirrh Mountain temple. Witnesses say the lightning blackened the arm, trumpet and face of the Moroni statue that sits on top of the temple's steeple. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has not confirmed the lightning strike.

SALT LAKE CITY -- A small international conference is taking place in Salt Lake City. For 22 years, scholars who are fascinated with new religions have gathered to study them. They have met in the U.S. only five times, twice in Salt Lake. Even though The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints isn't new, it generates a lot of interest. The Center for Study on New Religions (CESNUR) was created in 1988 to look at faiths in southern Europe, mostly Christian, outside Catholicism. The small group represents many countries. The members rejected terms like "cult" or "sect." The center's...

Saving Mormon souls from the perceived falsehoods of their faith typically has included dubbing the church a "cult" and providing a point-by-point comparison with traditional Christianity, while caricaturing Latter-day Saint believers and practices. Such tactics may fill the pews and energize the Evangelicals, but to John Morehead and Ken Mulholland, they are not the best tools for ministering to Mormons. "We need to provide something constructive and Christ-centered that takes into account a true understanding of the journey they've have been on," Morehead says. To that end, Morehead and Mulholland have produced a 14-minute trailer for a full-length multimedia effort...
