While carbon dioxide has been getting lots of publicity in climate change, reactive forms of nitrogen are also building up in the environment, scientists warn. "The public does not yet know much about nitrogen, but in many ways it is as big an issue as carbon, and due to the interactions of nitrogen and carbon, makes the challenge of providing food and energy to the world's peoples without harming the global environment a tremendous challenge," University of Virginia environmental sciences professor James Galloway said in a statement. "We are accumulating reactive nitrogen in the environment at alarming rates, and this...

HERNDON, Ky. (AP) - Burglars may have caused the chemical leak that led to the evacuation of an elementary school and residents, and they may have suffered chemical burns, officials say. Anhydrous ammonia leaked from a 30,000-gallon tank that had ruptured Monday at Agri-Chem Inc., an agricultural supply company. The chemical is used as a fertilizer, but it also is an ingredient in methamphetamine. GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A cloud of ammonia leaked from a chemical plant early Sunday, forcing tourists to evacuate eight hotels along the Gulf Coast. Authorities said it appeared someone had tried to steal the chemical, possibly to make illegal drugs. Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport was also shut down for seven hours, and several churches canceled or postponed Sunday services after police advised residents to stay indoors. A couple of emergency workers had to be treated but no other injuries were reported, police Sgt. Joseph Ashmore said. Anhydrous ammonia, used to make fertilizer, is highly explosive. Exposure irritates the skin and...
