Dear "Past Your Eyes", We are at a moment of truth for America's foreign policy -- our decisions today will dramatically shape the role of America in the world for generations to come. We must repair our nation's tarnished reputation and once again become a source of inspiration and hope across the globe. Right now, Congress is debating the best way to address our foreign policy challenges -- most importantly, ending the war in Iraq. Our troops are being asked to risk their lives to solve problems that our civilian leaders created. President Bush has yet to explain how our...

WASHINGTON, October 13, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright left government more than six years ago but she has not left public life. She now heads up the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and teaches at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. In her latest book, "The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections on America, God and World Affairs," Albright writes about how President George W. Bush has ceded U.S. moral authority on human rights issues, why Muslims are willing to listen to Al-Qaeda, and the role religious leaders should play in international conflicts. "I've...

On Serbia and Madeleine Albright. 7/29/2006, Volume 011, Issue 44 SPARRING OVER SERBIA STEPHEN SCHWARTZ's "Free at Last" (July 24) left me greatly surprised and somewhat disappointed, both by the distortion of historical and political facts and by the argumentation based on malicious and trivial political comments. Describing Serbia as a "mafia state" is intentionally overlooking the well-known fact that the Milosevic regime met its end when the Serbian people, investing enormous effort and encountering the greatest possible risk, overthrew it in their bloodless revolution of October 2000. Serbian democratic authorities, in their crackdown on organized crime, and with the...

Anthony Lake WASHINGTON, Dec. 14 - In a pivotal scene in "Hotel Rwanda," which opens Wednesday, the colonel in charge of a beleaguered United Nations peace-keeping force rushes to talk with the commanding officer of a fresh and heavily armed United Nations contingent that has just arrived at a hotel packed with refugees from the bloody genocide outside its walls. The colonel, played by Nick Nolte, suddenly throws his blue beret on the ground in anger. The eyes of the hotel manager, played by Don Cheadle, slowly register concern, then fear. The awful truth becomes clear: the new soldiers...

Macedonia/US: NAAC denies reports of Macedonian media Representatives of the New York-based National Albanian American Council (NAAC) denied Monday the reports of Macedonian media saying that Albanian Diaspora in the United States will stage a Pan-Albanian congress in Macedonia this summer. In an interview with Pristina’s daily Koha Ditore, the NAAC Trustee Harry Bajraktari said the information was not true because the Council did not discuss this issue during its last session. The Council discussed funds raising to support the Democrats’ candidate for president, John Kerry. Bajraktari said a number of high-ranking representatives of former US president Bill Clinton’s administration,...

World Survey: America's Image Slipping Add U.S. National - AP to My Yahoo! By WILL LESTER, Associated Press WriterWASHINGTON (AP) - The image of the United States is slipping worldwide, especially in Middle Eastern countries with large Muslim populations, just as this country is trying to rally the world against terrorism and gather allies for possible military action against Iraq. AP Photo In a broad international survey released Wednesday, the Pew Global Attitudes Project found the United States is falling out of favor in 19 of 27 countries where a trend could be identified. The dislike was especially striking in...
