• Muhammad Ali’s abhorrent views on race [Psalm 12]

LONG BEFORE he died, Muhammad Ali had been extolled by many as the greatest boxer in history. Some called him the greatest athlete of the 20th century. Still others, like George W. Bush, when he bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005, endorsed Ali's description of himself as "the greatest of all time." Ali's death Friday night sent the paeans and panegyrics to even more exalted heights. Fox Sports went so far as to proclaim Muhammad Ali nothing less than "the greatest athlete the world will ever see." As a champion in the ring, Ali may have been without equal. But when his idolizers go beyond boxing and sports, exalting him as a champion of civil rights and tolerance, they spout pernicious nonsense.

  • Muhammad Ali, conscientious objection, and the Supreme Court’s struggle to understand

You’ve probably heard that in 1971 the Supreme Court reversed Muhammad Ali’s conviction for refusing to be inducted into the Selective Service. But why did it do so? What was the legal issue on which the case turned? And what, if anything, did the criminal case have to do with Ali losing his championship and being precluded from fighting for more than three years? Here’s a brief summary of the legal machinations. I am deeply indebted to former Georgetown Law professor Tom Krattenmaker, one of Justice John Marshall Harlan’s clerks in the October Term 1970, from whom I learned some...

Actor Will Smith and former world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis will be among the eight pallbearers at Muhammad Ali’s memorial service Friday in Louisville, Ky. The legendary boxer died June 3 following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Other pallbearers at the service will include Jerry Ellis — brother of the late Jimmy Ellis, who was Ali’s former sparring partner and former world heavyweight champion — and several relatives and close friends. Smith received an Oscar nomination for playing the title role in the 2001 movie “Ali.”

Arab and Muslim sites are commemorating the death of perhaps the most prominent Muslim convert, boxing great Mohammed Ali. And the thing they like about him most seems to be his antisemitism and anti-Zionism. Both Islam21C and Middle East Monitor lovingly quote Ali from a 1980 interview: "You know the entire power structure is Zionist. They control America; they control the world. They are really against the Islam religion. That's pretty much pure antisemitism there, under the guise of "anti-Zionism." The sites also quote when Ali visited a Lebanese UNRWA camp in 1974, where he said he wanted the state...

As he reflected on Saturday on the death of Muhammad Ali, Donald J. Trump gushed, calling him a “terrific guy,” “so generous,” and an “amazing poet.” “He was two people,” Mr. Trump said of Ali in an interview. “In the ring, he was fierce, and outside of the ring, he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.” The presumptive Republican nominee’s kind words were not just an obligatory salute to an iconic figure. The two men had been friendly for many years, dating back at least to the 1980s. Ali attended Mr. Trump’s 2005 wedding to Melania...

Just had FOX News on the past hour or so. They cannot get enough of the adulation for Muhammed Ali. I'm not creating the thread to debate the pros or cons of that position. Just want to observe: they're playing clip after clip of Ali boasting of his power and skill and abilities. And the media is saying what a wonderful fellow he was. Seems to me there is a parallel today in another arena.

It was a small item in last Tuesday's New York Daily News: " 'Gorgeous George' gone," the headline read. Chances are, a lot of people responded by saying: "Who the heck was Gorgeous George? Never heard of him." In his heyday during the '40s and '50s, "Gorgeous George" was one of the biggest names in the phony game of rough-and-tumble wrestling. In 1955, the name (sometimes used by other wrestlers) was significant, not so much for what the showman accomplished by bending opponents into the shape of pretzels, but because of the unusual fashions worn in the masculine world of...

A mosque frequented by the leader of the airline plot terrorist cell has been a recruiting ground for extremists for more than 20 years. The Queen’s Road mosque in Walthamstow, northeast London, where Abdulla Ahmed Ali met his associates, is controlled by the ultraorthodox Tablighi Jamaat. Intelligence services around the world believe that Tablighi’s fundamentalism makes some of its followers easy prey for terrorist recruiters. Two decades ago the same mosque was hosting talks by followers of Omar Bakri Mohammed, one of the first Islamic clerics in Britain to preach jihad. The disclosure of the mosque’s history indicates that, despite...

Ali's comments on Islamic extremism: I am a Muslim and there is nothing Islamic about killing innocent people in Paris, San Bernardino, or anywhere else in the world. True Muslims know that the ruthless violence of so called Islamic Jihadists goes against the very tenets of our religion. We as Muslims have to stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda. They have alienated many from learning about Islam. True Muslims know or should know that it goes against our religion to try and force Islam on anybody. http://www.arklatexhomepage.com/news/muhammad-ali-hits-at-trump-and-misguided-murderers-sabotaging-islam

While speaking to the nation during his Oval Office address Sunday night, President Barack Obama asked everyone to remember that 'Muslim Americans are our friends, neighbors and sports heroes'. Though the president failed to mention any specific athletes by name during his 13-minute address, President Obama's reference to Muslim-American sports heroes was a well-played remark. Americans must not take out their grievances with the fanatics on followers of Islam, he said. There have been a number of prominent athletes in some of America's most popular sports who were raised as Muslims or converted to Islam during the course of their...

The current Sheriff is Scott Israel; he was elected to office in November 2012. As Sheriff, Israel has made it a point to reach out to diverse crowds, including those who could be considered enemies of the U.S. and her allies. Broward Sheriff Scott Israel’s 2015 radical Muslim tour began this past January, when he posed for photos with Sofian Abdelaziz Zakkout and a member of Zakkout’s Miami-based AMANA group at a local mosque. Zakkout is a big supporter of Hamas. On his Facebook page, one can find Hamas logos and photos of Hamas militants and leaders, including Hamas founders Ahmed Yassin and...

Bill Maher spoke with Ayaan Hirsi Ali tonight about a recurring topic of his, radical Islam, and spent quite a lot talking about liberal reactions to it. Maher brought up how liberals have targeted Hirsi Ali and may have also had the Muhammad cartoon contest on the brain when he asked why so many liberals, who normally “hate blaming the victim,” do so when it comes to radical Islam. Hirsi Ali said she’s not sure why liberals do that
