The Alabama Republican Assembly (ALRA) has announced its endorsement of Texas Republican Congressman Ron Paul for President. The ALRA is an affiliate of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies (NFRA), known as the Republican Wing of the Republican Party. Ronald Reagan once referred to the NFRA as "the conscience of the Republican Party." "We congratulate Ron Paul on winning the ALRA endorsement," said Elaine Little, Chairman of the Alabama Republican Assembly's endorsing convention. "It's evident that the overwhelming majority of delegates determined that Congressman Paul best represents the Republican platform and the conservative values of limited government and personal freedom."...

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee made his first campaign appearance in Alabama Saturday... Huckabee referred to a question from Thursday night's Republican debate in Boca Raton, Florida in which he was asked to respond to a critic's statement that "Huckabee's faith makes me queasy." While voicing support for freedom of religion, Huckabee asked, "Have we degenerated to the point that belief in God is a liability and not an asset? I hope not." Huckabee touched on four other campaign themes - the need for the nation to feed itself, become independent from foreign oil, develop a better immigration policy and...

In the Mix By Andy Powell, Times Staff Writer Published January 21, 2008 State actually could have impact on race; will voters show interest? For the first time in 20 years, Alabama is having an early presidential primary that actually might have an impact on the Democratic and Republican nominations. Alabama selects its delegates for the Democratic and Republican conventions in just more than two weeks, on Feb. 5, but the state is vying for the attention of candidates that day with 20 other states also holding primaries in what has been dubbed Super Tuesday. Because it is a...

WSFA 12 News has received a new poll from the Montgomery based Capital Survey Research Center, showing Alabamian voters preferences in the presidential election. On the Republican side, the last man into the race leads in Alabama, but his lead is dwindling. Fred Thomson is the preference of 26% of Alabama Republicans - down by about a fourth from his numbers in July. Thompson pushed Rudi Giuliani into second place in July, but now Giuiliani is at 24% only two percentage points behind. John Mccain is third at 12%, followed by Mitt Romney at 9%, Newt Gingrich at 7%. 18%...

Fred Thompson's road to the nomination, his advisers say, begins with a bridge to South Carolina. Now -- a bridge has two ends, and it looks like the anchorage is Iowa. But how can Thompson possibly compete with Rudy Giuliani** on Feb. 5? New York? California? New Jersey? Thanks to a quirk in the Republican delegate allocation schema, conservative, Republican candidates have an edge. The Republican National Committee awards bonus delegates to states based on their performance in general elections. States that always vote Republican get additional delegates; states like New York that vote Democratic do not. Bonus delegates account...

Very seldom will I venture a prediction on a major race like president, especially over a year out and with each party having 10 candidates openly vying for their nomination. In addition, it is the most open presidential race in my lifetime. It has been 80 years since a president was not seeking reelection and a sitting vice-president was not seeking to move up. The race is truly wide open. I am going out on a limb and predicting that Fred Thompson will be chosen as the republican nominee for president at their convention this time next year and that...
