  • Obama Builds a Big Tent . . . for Conservatives (VIDEO)

The rally demonstrated how the Obama administration's excesses have brought different strands of the conservative movement together. It will drive liberals crazy, but Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" Rally probably outdrew Rev. Martin Luther King Jr's original "I Have a Dream" rally, on which it was patterned. Mr. Beck's rally also lived up to its promise to be non-political. Weaving through the crowd on Saturday, the most partisan sign I saw read "I Can See November From My House." On a BBC panel discussion afterward, one of my fellow participants insisted the rally was political nonetheless because so many who attended...

It was a great day. First of all, I'm no expert at crowd estimates, but one thing to bear in mind when looking at the aerial photos is that under the dense trees all along the reflecting pool, there were wall-to-wall people sitting in the shade; if you wanted to go to the head (the portable johns were along the walkway), you needed to pick your way through the densely packed crowd. None of those people are visible from the aerial photos. Here's a capsule of the crowd: A young couple from Pittsburgh behind us with their 4 well-behaved kids...
  • Glenn Beck rally attendance: calculating how many really showed up (Remote sensing est.: > 800,000)

Glenn Beck rally attendance has become hotly contested following Saturday's event in Washington. But from Woodstock to the Million Man March, figuring out the number of people who show up at big events has never been easy. Can we really get an accurate count of the number of people who attended Saturday's Glenn Beck “Restoring Honor” rally? The answer might be, “No, we can’t.” Crowd-counting science is far from exact. Much of it is based on examination of overhead photos to calculate crowd density and related statistics. It reminds us of the old intelligence agency practice of “shedology,” in which...

An estimated 87,000 people attended a rally organized by talk-radio host and Fox News commentator Glenn Beck Saturday in Washington, according to a crowd estimate commissioned by CBS News. The company AirPhotosLive.com based the attendance on aerial pictures it took over the rally, which stretched from in front of the Lincoln Memorial along the Reflecting Pool to the Washington Monument. Beck and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin spoke at the rally. Beck, who predicted that at least 100,000 people would show up, opened his comments with a joke: "I have just gotten word from the media that there is over...

Yesterday, hundreds of thousands of Americans – of many creeds and colors – made what ended up being a pilgrimage of sorts to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., for Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor rally. Catholics, other Christians and Jews spoke to WND on site, many celebrating the themes of faith and reliance on God proclaimed from the platform. As WND reported, Beck proclaimed the purpose of the rally, saying, "It has nothing to do with politics; it has everything to do with God." Beck, the Fox News TV host and a professed Mormon, urged his fellow Americans to live...

On Sunday's episode of CNN's 'Reliable Sources,' Bill Press, Jane Hall and I joined host Howard Kurtz to debate and discuss Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally. Press -- whom I like personally (and who has previously appeared on my podcast), made what were (in my estimation) the most controversial comments of the day. First, he argued it was inappropriate for Glenn Beck to invoke religion at the Lincoln Memorial, saying, "I thought I was at a camp meeting -- an old fashioned, religious camp meeting; I don't think that's appropriate on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial." (Of course, the...

WASHINGTON—Politicians across the spectrum on Sunday differed over the significance of the Glenn Beck-led rally that drew throngs of conservatives and tea-party supporters to the National Mall. Republicans said the rally was a reflection of the country's objections to the policies of the Obama administration, while Democrats said the tea-party movement had created a deep split in the Republican Party that could hurt the GOP in the November elections. Attendees on Saturday packed nearly a mile of the National Mall at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial, in an event that carried the tone of a spiritual revival. Many at...

Apocalyptic views hinder constructive political debateBy Robert McCartney Sunday, August 29, 2010 **SNIP** Instead, these people think our morals have sunk so low and our political leaders have become so unresponsive that the rule of law is breaking down in America. In interviews with members of the crowd at the Lincoln Memorial, I found that many shared such an apocalyptic view of a country on the wrong track. But when pressed for evidence of such severe deterioration, they didn't offer very compelling examples. Basically, the "tea party" thinks the moderately liberal social agenda pushed by the Obama administration is just...

Estimating attendance at political rallies and demonstrations is a notoriously imprecise science. Glenn Beck’s “Restore America” rally at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial has been variously estimated from 87,000 by the Huffington Post, 300,000 by NBC News and the New York Times and 500,000 by rally organizers. Sky News concurred with rally organizers in estimating attendance at 500,000. A counter rally led by Al Sharpton was estimated to have drawn several hundred people.

On Saturday some half a million plus patriots descended upon Washington D.C. to call for the restoration of American values and to honor those brave men and women who are serving this nation in the military. I have been receiving multiple links about the Restoring Honor rally held on 8-28-10 all day from a variety of people. Our own Conclub blogger MoK was in attendance and I hope that we will hear a first person report once she returns and has a chance to fill us in. It was a fairly bold and risky move to hold the rally on...

Glenn Beck's 8/28 rally delivered a swift kick in the rear to anyone who claims he or the conservative grassroots movement is irrelevant or idle. "Welcome to Restoring Honor. You are standing on the banks of greatness, the banks of American dreams," said Beck, during his initial remarks. "America is a land of opportunity." Beck's opening salvo set the tune for the rest of the day, which focused on the founding fathers, with a heavy dose of religious reverence and military pride. Somewhere in the ballpark of 500,000 followers crowded the space between the Lincoln and Washington monuments, dwarfing Beck's...

WASHINGTON — If Democrats had doubts about the voter unrest that threatens to rob them of their majority in Congress, they needed only look from the Capitol this weekend to the opposite end of the National Mall. It's where Ken Ratliff joined tens of thousands of other anti-government activists at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial for conservative commentator Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally. "There's gotta' be a change, man," said Ratliff, a 55-year-old Marine veteran from Rochester, N.Y.

It was billed as a rallying call for spiritual and moral renewal. But some say the huge turnout in Washington DC for the “Restoring Honor” march underscores the political potency of the conservative movement in the US. TV host Glenn Beck organised the controversial gathering. He told the crowd that the country had lost its way. Some had ignored pleas not to bring political signs and banners. 47 years to-the-day and on the same spot where Martin Luther King Jr told HIS audience “I have a dream”, Sarah Palin drew comparisons: “You have the same still spine and moral courage...
