In 1992 George H. W. Bush was an unpopular incumbent president forced to run against both Bill Clinton and H. Ross Perot. For the offensive of not being Ronald Reagan and getting snuckered into raising taxes after publicly pledging not to do exactly that, Bush was targeted for extinction by many people who would ordinarily have been counted among his certain and strongest supporters. Those responding to Roper’s exit polls and calling themselves conservatives, reported having voted 18% for Clinton as well as 18% for Perot.
