The news of this week was summed up in a phrase: Habemus papam. The election of a new Pope was major news for the world's 1.4 billion Catholics, of course, but the internal workings of the Vatican hold a strange, almost universal appeal, and even after two millennia the papacy is appreciated as a political institution as much as a religious one. Everybody, Catholic or not, suddenly had an opinion about the candidates and the factions fighting over each ballot behind the locked door of the Sistine Chapel, and the most confident analyses were, as ever, offered by non-Catholics –...

In the last edition of AI Eye, we reported that ChatGPT had become noticeably more sycophantic recently, and people were having fun giving it terrible business ideas — shoes with zippers, soggy cereal cafe — which it would uniformly say was amazing. The dark side of this behavior, however, is that combining a sycophantic AI with mentally ill users can result in the LLM uncritically endorsing and magnifying psychotic delusions. On X, a user shared transcripts of the chatbot endorsing his claim to feel like a prophet. “That’s amazing,” said ChatGPT. “ That feeling — clear, powerful, certain — that’s...

Does the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms apply to fully automatic machine guns? The US District Court for the Western District of Tennessee is poised to rule on the matter. Jaquan Bridges pleaded guilty to possessing a machine gun after engaging in a 2023 shootout with police officers on a Tennessee highway. Courthouse News reported that Bridges “was arrested with a Glock .40 caliber pistol with an attachment that converted the handgun into a machine gun, but fought to dismiss the charge on constitutional grounds.” He claimed the 2022 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in New York State...

Representative LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that she did not body slam anyone during the arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka at the Delaney Hall Detention Center last week. Host Dana Bash said, “I want to go back to some of the footage we were looking at, at some, and I want our viewers to see that you are the woman in the red blazer as we show them, DHS says that obviously that there were chaos, that maybe you were trespassing. You can talk about that. But DHS also says that, in their...

[Catholic Caucus] Leo XIV: the Man, the Priest, and the Bishop - Who is He? An Assessment, by RORATE CÆLI Who Is He?by Serre Verweijfor Rorate CæliMay 10, 2025Robert Francis Prevost has become Pope Leo XIV. Before May 8, 2025, most people did not know the name Prevost, but now he is the chief shepherd of over a billion Catholics. Both orthodox Catholics and modernists have been celebrating, while there have been naysayers on both sides, too. This reflects the fact Prevost was touted as a ‘compromise candidate’ and pushed by strong prelates on both sides. Both the orthodox and...

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Sunday reported "substantial progress" in U.S. talks with China's top economic officials to de-escalate a damaging trade war, but offered no details of an agreement reached as two days of negotiations wrapped up in Geneva. Bessent told reporters that details would be announced on Monday and that U.S. President Donald Trump was fully aware of the results of the "productive talks." U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who participated in the talks with Bessent, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and two Chinese vice ministers, described the conclusion as "a deal we struck with our Chinese partners"...

Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) said Sunday on MSNBC’s “Ali Velshi” that the Trump administration was attempting to silence Congress and suspend the Constitution. When asked about the arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka at the Delaney Hall Detention Center last week, Van Hollen said, “The assault that we’re witnessing right now is the Trump administration’s assault on the Constitution and due process rights, and in this case separation of powers and the ability of Congress to get the facts. We even had Stephen Miller, the other day, the president, one of his top advisers, talk about suspending the Constitution,...

ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan asked a woman who accused him of sexual assault to drop charges so he could issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday. Some details about the allegations became known in November, shortly before the International Criminal Court issued at Khan’s request the warrant for the arrest of Netanyahu and Israel’s then defense minister, Yoav Gallant. The Journal’s exposé offers new details on the allegations against Khan and how he allegedly linked the charges to the arrest warrants against Israeli leaders. The complainant, a Malaysian lawyer...

Did Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor forget that it’s generally frowned upon for judges to display their political partisanship? It’s a question worth asking given that the Obama appointee appeared to do just that in her recent public remarks. On Thursday night, Sotomayor attended an event hosted by the notoriously left-wing American Bar Association (ABA), in which she seemingly made an indirect reference to President Trump and conservatives’ criticisms of the ongoing judicial coup among lower court judges who are stymieing the administration’s agenda via overreaching injunctions. As The Federalist’s Joy Pullmann previously reported, the ABA routinely “advocates for and...

May 9 (UPI) -- An animal control officer in Pennsylvania came to the rescue of a stowaway cat found crying under the hood of a state senator's vehicle. Can Elon Musk repair the Vatican's woeful fiscal state? I'll save my opinion on the selection of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as our new pontiff for another column, although his anti-Trump social media posts, his slams of Catholic Vice President JD Vance, and his stance favoring illegal aliens flooding the US. At the same time, the Vatican is safely protected by the Swiss Guard, which does not fill me with hope. AdvertisementThe cardinals did not read an earlier column I wrote advocating for either Cardinals Raymond Burke or Robert Sarah for the top job. (Okay, my own kids don't read...

Daily Readings from the USCCBJesus said: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.” John 10:27–28The image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd is an endearing image. Many artists have depicted the gentleness of Christ as He leads His sheep or carries a straying lamb on His shoulders. We are given this image today as we celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday. In our short Gospel passage today, Jesus addressed some of the Jews who were trying to trap...

Ships of Britain's massive Royal Navy, the largest in the world, inflicted great damage on American ports, property, and vessels during the years of the Revolution (1775–1783). Perhaps none of those ships wreaked more havoc than HMS Phoenix, and it accomplished its devious work not with a cannon but with a printing press. The bodies from the battle on Boston's Bunker Hill were buried just days earlier when the Second Continental Congress authorized the printing of paper money (see "The Times That Tried Men's Economic Souls"). What began with a modest batch of six million in continental dollars turned into...

Several of the key voter groups that provided President Donald Trump’s most important electoral gains in November are recoiling from him as his term moves past the 100-day mark. But it remains unclear how much Democrats can benefit from these growing doubts. In 2024, Trump improved his performance among some big voting blocs that have historically favored Democrats, including Latinos, younger men, non-White voters without a college degree, and, to some extent, Black men. Trump’s advances generated exuberant predictions from an array of right-leaning analysts that he had achieved a lasting realignment and cemented the GOP’s hold on voters of...

VIDEOIf anyone out there still doubts the incredible power of TDS over the minds of liberals, then you should watch this video. In the middle of last December this liberal, although he had a moral chip on his shoulder about the incoming Trump administration, calmly and in a soft voice sounded like Gandhi in how people should display their opposition calmly and and without name calling and personal attacks. Fast forward just six months to May 2025 and you can see the AMAZING metamorphosis in the latter day Gandhi triggered entirely by TDS. It's like Trump has such power over...
