When I was asked to take over this column from my friend Kathy Shaidle, at her request, I knew one thing for certain: it would be a long time before I'd try to write about Bette Davis. It was nearly midnight in late April when Lynell Morris’s husband, Michael, returned home after a shift at work. As he fumbled his keys, the motion-sensing light on their front doorstep flicked on. His eye caught a glint of gold: a .22 bullet on his doormat. It seemed odd as he and Lynell own a different-caliber firearm. Nevertheless, he brought it inside and set it on their kitchen table. A few days later, he remembered to ask Lynell about it. Immediately, she yelped, “Politics!” Neither Lynell nor Michael is running for office. But over the last few months, Lynell had...

In what has been the most dramatic election for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in a hundred years, final culmination came on the fifteenth ballot with the election of Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. The election however did not come without McCarthy’s historic commitment to a heroic band of 20 opponents who negotiated substantial policy initiatives as well as procedural rule changes that will transform the role of the Speaker from a dictatorial empire-builder, and with it, make the House of Representatives into a more self-governing representative body.
