By yesterday, it looked like the battle for Mariupol was over in all but name when Zelensky sent word to his own troops to get out if they were able. The steel mill where the fighters, along with thousands of civilians had been holed up has been mostly shelled into rubble. Finally, the wounded were removed on stretchers and a significant number of the remaining troops turned themselves over to the Russian forces. Starting today, May 16, Florida insurance agents and 68,000 policyholders will have 45 days to find new homeowners and dwelling coverage, under a financial restructuring plan submitted by FedNat Insurance and its sister companies. That could help the Florida Insurance Guaranty Association avoid having to, once again, raise the assessment on other insurers, industry insiders said. “The early cancellation of policies … is an extraordinary statutory remedy reserved to address insurers which are or may be...

The nutrient choline—shown to have long-term benefits for children whose mothers consume it during pregnancy—also helps the body more efficiently use an omega 3 fatty acid that is essential for fetal brain, cognition and vision development, a study finds. The findings show that choline supplementation supports cellular metabolism to more efficiently handle and release the omega 3 fatty acid DHA from a pregnant individual's liver. Once released into the bloodstream, DHA can be delivered into all the tissues, including the placenta. …Caudill and others have also shown that high maternal choline intake eases an infant's response to stress, improves information...

The House passed legislation late Wednesday night that would bolster federal resources to prevent domestic terrorism in response to the racist mass shooting in Buffalo, New York. The 222-203, nearly party-line vote was an answer to the growing pressure Congress faces to address gun violence and white supremacist attacks — a crisis that escalated following two mass shootings over the weekend. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., a member of the congressional committee investigating the attack on the U.S. Capitol, was the lone Republican to vote in favor of the measure.

The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday ruled the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is denying defendants a constitutional right to a jury trial by putting them in front of its own internal judges. Women instructed to embrace their romantic partner prior to undergoing a stressful experience had a lower biological stress response—as indicated by levels of the stress hormone cortisol in saliva—compared to women who did not embrace their partner. This effect was not seen for men. In some settings, social touch may buffer against stress. Previous research has shown that massages, embraces combined with hand-holding, and embraces combined with affectionate communication can all reduce signs of stress in women. However, few studies have investigated these effects in men, nor have they explored the effects of brief embraces on their own. To explore...
