The military in Zimbabwe appears to have taken control of the country’s airwaves amid high tension in the capital and reports of explosions. After securing control of the state broadcaster, a military spokesman made a televised announcement early on Wednesday saying President Robert Mugabe and his family were “safe and sound and their security is guaranteed”. He said the army was targeting “criminals around” Mugabe, who were “committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in order to bring them to justice”. He said “as soon as they are done situation will come to normalcy.” The army spokesman said...

Zimbabwe's military has read out a statement on the country's national broadcaster, ZBC, saying it has taken action to "target criminals". However, it said this was not "a military takeover of government" and President Robert Mugabe was safe. Heavy gunfire and artillery were heard in northern suburbs of the capital, Harare, early on Wednesday. Zimbabwe's envoy to South Africa, Isaac Moyo, earlier dismissed talk of a coup, saying the government was "intact". A statement read out by the military on TV said the army wanted to deal with people who "were committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering...

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), joined by Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Ed Markey (D-MA), Jack Reed (D-RI), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Ron Wyden (D-OR), and Patty Murray (D-WA), announced legislation to prohibit smoking at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The legislation would repeal an antiquated 1992 law that requires the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) to furnish and maintain designated indoor or outdoor smoking areas. Supported by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the bill would bring the VA in line with smoke-free policies across the federal government and in the private health care system. “Simply put, this bill will help save lives. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, only...

Let’s face it. These are trying times. The Assault on Reason, as Al Gore calls it, is a war in full bloom on all fronts. One that, sadly, seems to only get worse as the days go by. The more proof that emerges revealing the overwhelming majority of our country’s most powerful leaders are nothing but a bunch of corrupt criminals and traitors, the more their supporters will deny it. On one side, we have a population that relies on facts, truth, fair play, and common sense. On the other, well, who the hell knows what they rely on? Fox...

WASHINGTON — Republicans in Washington may be abandoning Roy Moore by the droves. But in Alabama, the GOP has Moore's back and is threatening retribution against defectors. The chairwoman of the Alabama Republican Party warned she's ready to enforce strict rules on party purity in the state's Senate race, even if it means kicking GOP candidates off the ballot in future elections. "It would be a serious error for any current elected GOP official or candidate to publicly endorse another party's candidate, an independent, a third party or a write in candidate in a general election as well,” Alabama GOP...

A British Government education watchdog ordered the Holy Ghost Catholic Primary School in London to remove “mother” and “father” in their admission form in order to please “separated, step and gay parents”. The Bishops’ Catholic Education Service, known for accommodating to gay ideology, is now drafting a new form for its 2,230 Catholic schools. The form will only refer to “the family”. Many schools already use “parent 1” and “parent 2”. The Sunday Times cites an expert who called this decision “profoundly undemocratic, illiberal and a capitulation to a form of politically correct fascism”.

A couple of thoughts on the passing scene: ~Tempest in a K-cup: The CEO of Keurig got himself into hot water over the weekend after his coffee company appeared to take the side of the totalitarian thugs at Media Matters For America over its sleazy smear of Sean Hannity. I loathe the way every aspect of American life is now hyper-politicized, including your breakfast cereal and now your morning cup of coffee. But that's mainly a function of thought-police like Media Matters demanding that craven corporations jump, and wimp CEOs responding, "How high?" This time Keurig's customers pushed back, posting...

A week after Westmoreland County acknowledged it erred in allowing several hundred voters to improperly cast absentee ballots in this month's general election, officials are still trying to figure out why it occurred. “The only thing we can really surmise is that what happened was a misinterpretation of the law,” said Beth Lechman, the county's election bureau director. Voting officials allowed 278 people to cast absentee ballots for the Nov. 7 election solely because they were 65 and older. That accounted for 16 percent of nearly 1,700 absentee ballots submitted countywide. Voters cast 65,770 total ballots on Election Day in...
