Dendritic cells, shown here in an electron microscopic picture, need antibodies produced by B cells for their maturation. Dendritic cells, or DCs for short, perform a vital role for the immune system: They engulf pathogens, break them down into their component parts, and then display the pieces on their surface. This in turn signals other immune cells capable of recognizing these pieces to help kick-start their own default program for fighting off the invaders. In order to do their job, the DCs are dependent upon the support from a class of immune system molecules, which have never before been associated...

This is a USA map of Guns used for self-defense. Gun control proponents cannot deny that people use guns successfully against criminals, but they tend to play down how often such events take place. The purpose of this map is to draw more attention to this aspect of the firearms policy debate. It is not comprehensive, but is useful. http://www.cato.org/guns-and-self-defense

In spring 2008, Canadian Infantry Cpl. Katie Moman landed in Kandahar, Afghanistan, trained, equipped and ready to fight for one of the few Western armies that allow women in all front-line combat roles. But as her six-month tour progressed, Cpl. Moman found her troubles had less to do with Afghan insurgents and more to do with what she says was her commanders' desire to keep her from them. The complaint—echoed by other Canadian women serving in combat—underscores one of several pitfalls America's neighbor to the north has encountered in its decadeslong experience with allowing women to enter front-line jobs. Canadian...

A Mountain View man faces 10 years to life in prison for receiving a shipment of black tar heroin hidden in a tortilla press. Mike Gama, 23, was found guilty Tuesday in federal court for accepting a package on June 20, 2011. The package was shipped from Michoacan, Mexico, via DHL, according to the San Jose Mercury News. It contained a wooden tortilla press -- and 1.07 kilograms of black tar heroin, according to the federal Justice Department. The DHL package was sniffed out by federal agents first in Cincinnati, Ohio, and then in San Jose. Agents were ready to...

Joe McGinniss, the author of "Fatal Vision," "Final Vision" and a 2011 Sarah Palin biography, announced that he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer last May. "I was diagnosed in May with advanced, metastatic prostate cancer," he wrote Wednesday on his Facebook page. "There is no cure, so sooner or later it's terminal." --snip-- Most recently, McGinniss profiled Sarah Palin in "The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin," which portrayed the former GOP vice presidential candidate in a less than positive manner. After renting a house neighboring Palin's Alaskan home to carry out his research, he emerged with claims...

Metro-North commuters may be able to browse the Internet from their laptops, tablets and other devices using wi-fi as they travel to and from their destinations if state Rep. Gail Lavielle gets her way. Lavielle, R-143rd District—which includes parts of Westport, Wilton and Norwalk—proposed a bill that would require Metro-North to provide wi-fi access to passengers. The proposed legislation would also allow a private contractor to provide the service. “Our hardworking commuters travel for hours every day on Metro-North, and they want to spend their time productively,” Lavielle said in a statement. “Commuters have seen a steep spike in their...
  • Harry Reid squanders opportunity for filibuster reform

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid blew it. He had the votes for serious filibuster reform in the palm of his hand, and he chickened out. Reid feared a day ahead when Democrats are no longer the majority party in the Senate. But his legacy will be that he abandoned desperately needed reform and chose more gridlock instead. Every four years, following a presidential election, the Senate can review and revise its rules. Filibuster rules have strayed far from the tactic's purpose and now allow the minority party to block not only votes but even debate on issues of the day....

Alexis de Tocqueville once observed that “Every generation is a new people.” Demographers reckon a generation at 20-25 years, so that means that every 20-25 years, a lot of folks need a lot of things explained to them that their parents and grandparents take for granted. No big deal, we just do it. But on the internet, it seems that every month is a new generation, so that means that about once a month, questions arise that many of us have treated numerous times in the past. Problem is, these allegedly novel questions shoot through cyberspace with amazing speed,...

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: I want to give a shout out. This does not happen much. Rich Lowry is the editor at National Review and he has a column now that runs at Politico. The column today is called "Rush Was Right." And as I say, I'm only calling this to your attention because this doesn't really happen much. He starts out by saying: "There should have been something for everyone in President Barack Obama's second inaugural address. For liberals, a full-throated call to arms. For conservatives, vindication. Obama settled once and for all the debate over his place on the...

As Senate Democrats unveiled an “assault weapons ban” encompassing a variety of rifles, shotguns, and pistols, the newest lawyer in the U.S. Senate pointed out that “real assault weapons” have been illegal since 1934. “Washington politicians shouldn’t be taking advantage of recent tragedy to try to push an aggressive gun control agenda,” said Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, in a statement today. “Real assault weapons—machine guns—are already functionally illegal, and they have been since 1934. This proposal would have done nothing to prevent the terrible murders in Newtown, but it would limit the constitutional liberties of law-abiding citizens.” Through the National...

January 23, 2013 Watergate-era Judiciary chief of staff: Hillary Clinton fired for lies, unethical behavior By DAN CALABRESE - Bet you didn't know this. I've decided to reprint a piece of work I did nearly five years ago, because it seems very relevant today given Hillary Clinton's performance in the Benghazi hearings. Back in 2008 when she was running for president, I interviewed two erstwhile staff members of the House Judiciary Committee who were involved with the Watergate investigation when Hillary was a low-level staffer there. I interviewed one Democrat staffer and one Republican staffer, and wrote two pieces based...

Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, the head of the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division who played a critical role in lying to Congress about Operation Fast and Furious, plans to resign soon, the Washington Post reports, citing anonymous sources. “It is not clear when Breuer intends to leave his post, nor what he plans to do once he departs, but it is certain that the prosecutor’s days in office are winding down, according to people who were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter,” the Post wrote. When asked for a comment on the Post’s report, and to verify...

Fake prices are coming back at JCPenney, and this time they’ll be more fake than ever. In a fresh bid to highlight Penney’s prices as low, CEO Ron Johnson is pushing some manufacturers to concoct phony suggested retail markups for their clothing, sources told The Post. The plan, insiders say, includes erecting signs and fixtures that will display the sometimes made-up retail prices, while tagging the clothes and accessories themselves with Penney’s own lower prices. “They want to have a table of sweaters with a sign saying ‘regular price, $30,’ and the price tag will be $22,’” one source told...

    one man's opinion...
First of all, let's be clear..this NOT meant to be a complaining, bitching thread, but rather to pose a simple, straightforward question that might deserve consideration. Yes, FR is slow..that's a given.it has been slow for a while, it is slow, and appears that it will likely continue to be slow in the future. And I have made the suggested tweaks and modifications on my computer, and that has helped somewhat, but as we know, during high volume periods of use, it really crawls.
