More than 150,000 great white shark detections were recorded off of Cape Cod and along the coast of Massachusetts last year, according to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy tagging tracker. The total count of 159,598 shark detections in 2021 was a record high for the sixth straight year in the Conservancy’s White Shark Logbook, which has detection data from as far back as 2010. The previous all-time high from 2020 was 136,135 detections. The Conservancy has continued to tag more sharks in the region every year, resulting in more detections each shark season. “The greater number of detections logged in...

Cape Cod great white shark survey: Few tourists stopping beach visits because of sharks

While many are frightened of great white sharks, a majority of people believe they have control over whether they encounter the apex predators along Cape Cod. Tourists especially are taking actions to avoid shark encounters, but only a few Cape visitors have cut back on their beach trips because of sharks since a person was killed by a great white in Wellfleet four years ago. That’s according to a new survey released Monday about humans coexisting with sharks and seals along the Cape. Representative samples of Cape visitors, residents and commercial fishers — about 2,000 people in total — responded...

“Missile Row” pads at Cape Canaveral returning to action

A hub for rocketry research and development in its early days, the Cape served as a test center not just for spaceflight and research but also for the US missile development programs...and along the eastern coastline, the iconic “missile row” of Atlas and Titan launch complexes dominated the skyline. Many of the Cape’s launch facilities have long since fallen silent, but with newcomers Firefly and Relativity preparing for their first launches from Cape Canaveral, the sight of rockets lifting off along the “row” is about to return. The eight launch pads that made up the core of what is unofficially...

An extensive new analysis published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports has produced new and impressive evidence supporting the idea that the shipwreck found in 1863 was the Sparrow-Hawk, something shipwreck historians have long believed but were never able to prove. Through the application of techniques that can accurately date wood and trace it to its place of origin, the scientists involved in this study have linked the pieces of timber found on a Cape Cod beach in 1863 to the shipbuilding industry of late 16th and early 17th century England. The 40-foot small pinnace ship that was scuttled...

LOCAL NEWS Great white sharks have been a major focus along Cape Cod. More tiger sharks could be coming soon because of climate change Tiger sharks moving north ‘could have ramifications for human safety’ Tiger sharks are migrating farther north because of climate change, according to new research. Move over, great white sharks. A new apex predator could be patrolling the Cape soon, as tiger sharks migrate farther north each year because of climate change and warmer oceans. While waters off the Northeast have historically been too cold for tiger sharks, temps have warmed significantly in recent years and are...

Tiny Or BIG Bubbles? Buffett Indicator, Shiller CAPE At Dangerous Levels Thanks To Fed And Their Champagne Policies

The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meeting should have a Lawrence Welk bubble machine operating, particularly for their announcements. When we look at the Buffett Indicator, we can see how The Federal Reserve’s loose monetary policies (or follycies) are driving up stocks to unsustainable levels that may not survive without The Fed’s “Do Ho Big Bubble Policies.” How about the Shiller CAPE (Cyclically-adjusted Price/Earnings) ratio? While not up to dot.com levels yet, the Shiller CAPE ratio is climbing with the assistance of The Fed and their insane money printing. How about house prices? The Case-Shiller National home price index is...

SHARK’S-EYE POINT OF VIEW New video tags allow researchers to hitch a ride with massive predators off Cape CHATHAM – If a picture is worth 1,000 words, shark researchers have found that a video can answer 1,000 questions. Atlantic White Shark Conservancy scientist Megan Winton was reviewing footage from the first year of video tagging when she came across a newly tagged great white shark that had just eaten a seal — telltale sign: seal intestines hanging from its gills — and was resting on the bottom of the ocean. Winton was initially disappointed they had missed the actual predation,...

The bishop of Fall River has directed a pastor on Cape Cod to stop commenting on the coronavirus vaccines. Father Michael Fitzpatrick, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis, read a letter from the bishop at the end of Mass on Sunday, December 5. “… I have directed Father Fitzpatrick to refrain from speaking publicly or in writing on the Covid 19 vaccines, any treatment from the vaccine, or any preventative measures to avoid transmission of the virus,” Bishop Edgar da Cunha wrote in the letter, according to a video of the Mass.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – A Cape Coral man is banned from flying on United Airlines after failing to comply with the federal mask mandate. Adam Jenne wore a red thong as a mask. He was heading to D.C. from the Fort Lauderdale Airport but got kicked off before the flight could take off. “I think the best way to illustrate absurdity is with absurdity,” said Jenne. This is not the first time he’s tried flying with the red panties as a mask. “Every single flight has been met with different reactions from the flight crew,” said Jenne. “Some with a...

As The Federal Reserve tries to drain-off the extraordinary growth in its balance sheet since COVID without raising its target rate (good luck with that!), it is time to appraise where we are sitting. First, liquidity. Let’s look at the ongoing saga of Chinese conglomerate Evergrande (mainly known as a large real estate developer). Their 8.25% bond has plunged to $23.481 on speculation of a catastrophic default on their bond payments. Then we have Invesco’s Golden Dragon China ETF (measuring a diversified market cap of US-listed companies headquartered or incorporated in China & derive a majority of their revenues from...

Cape Cod shark season was ‘very productive,’ as researchers tagged dozens of great whites

Most of the great white sharks that hang around Cape Cod have started heading south toward warmer waters after another “very productive” research season. Shark scientists with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy tagged dozens of the apex predators this year, bringing the researchers’ total to 279 sharks tagged in the last several years. During the fieldwork this shark season, Atlantic White Shark Conservancy researchers with the Division of Marine Fisheries put out 39 acoustic tags and 10 special CATs tags that give scientists a sharks’ eye view through video footage. “We got a lot accomplished, a lot of tags went...

...snip.. Later, Sexton realized the brief session contained the unsolvable puzzle. The waters of Cape Cod were not going to be free of white sharks or people anytime soon, and for all of his work studying the predators, he could not answer the most basic question. “It was awesome to be in the water and to see her there,” he said. “But should we really be in the water? I don’t know.” Lanctot did not know either. “Felt really good to get back in the water,” she texted that evening. Then the old foreboding returned. By mid-October, peak season for...

Four great white sharks were spotted close together off Chatham earlier this week, a reminder that it’s still peak season for white shark activity off the Cape as October starts. Spotter pilot Wayne Davis the other day took the photo of the four white sharks during an Atlantic White Shark Conservancy ecotourism trip. Those with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy said it’s important to let people know that great white shark peak season continues through October, and that people should remain “Shark Smart” and follow safety guidelines. Based on years of shark tagging data, the great white shark peak activity...

Walking down the dock at Long Wharf in August 2020, I was giddy with anticipation. Ulysse Nardin, the Swiss luxury watchmaker, had invited me to tour a 126-foot ship that was docked in Boston before its upcoming voyage. I have minimal interest in fancy timepieces, but couldn’t wait to learn about the boat and its owners and operators, Ocearch, a nonprofit that Ulysse Nardin sponsors. The international research vessel had been tricked out so it could haul white sharks aboard for study before returning them to the sea. I often joke that my spirit animal is a seal, because I...

CHATHAM, Mass. (AP) — There’s no ominous music, no telltale fin breaking the surface as the powerful silhouette of a great white shark glides alongside the small tour boat off Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Michael Simard crouches low and points a finger in the direction of the roughly 10-foot (3-meter) predator cruising in the glassy water below. The 48-year-old construction foreman from Cambridge, Massachusetts, glances back at his partner, Penny Antonoglou, who dutifully pulls out her smartphone while he holds the pose. Smile. Click. “It’s awe-inspiring, really,” Simard said after the tour, where they spotted at least six great whites....

Shark biologist John Chisholm shared photos of multiple sharks seen on Monday, including one feeding off a dead humpback. “Several white sharks sighted today off MA including one enormous individual feeding on a dead humpback whale,” he wrote on Facebook. “The two others seem tiny in comparison. One of the smaller ones is towing a recently deployed tag.” The shark feeding off the whale is estimated to be larger than 17 feet, the Facebook post stated. Videos of the whale were also shared on Captain John Boats’ Facebook page, which is a tour company. “We started off with a couple...

Breakthrough infections were responsible for three-quarters of COVID-19 cases in an outbreak during large public gatherings on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and nearly all sequenced cases were the Delta variant, researchers found. Of 469 cases linked to multiple summer events and large summer gatherings in a small town, 346 (74%) occurred in fully vaccinated people, and almost 80% of those cases were symptomatic, reported Catherine Brown, DVM, of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and colleagues. There were five hospitalizations, four among fully vaccinated people, and no deaths. Of 133 cases with sequence information available, 89% were from the Delta variant...
