~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: USCG Air Station Cape Cod, Massachusetts Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod is a United States Coast Guard air station located on Joint Base Cape Cod formerly known as Otis Air National Guard Base in Sandwich, Massachusetts. It operates from New York City to the Canada–US border. It was founded in 1970 as a replacement to Coast Guard Air Station Salem. The missions of CGAS Cape Cod include search and rescue (SAR), Maritime Law enforcement, International Ice Patrol, aids to navigation support (such as operating lighthouses), and marine environmental protection (such as responding to oil spills). Currently, CGAS Cape Cod maintains and operates the HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft, along with HH-60 Jayhawk helicopters. U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod (ASCC), operates with MH-60T Jayhawk helicopters and HC-144A Ocean Sentry fixed-wing aircraft, and is the only Coast Guard Aviation facility in the northeast. As such, ASCC is responsible for the waters from New Jersey to the Canadian border. Centrally located at Joint Base Cape Cod, ASCC maintains the ability to launch a helicopter and/or fixed-wing aircraft within 30 minutes of a call, 365 days-a-year, 24 hours-a-day, and in nearly all weather conditions. The waters of the United States and its territories are marked to assist navigation by the U.S. Aids to Navigation System. These aids may be anything from lighted structures, beacons, day markers, range lights, fog signals and landmarks to floating buoys. Aircraft from Air Station Cape Cod provide logistical support to Coast Guard ATON teams by carrying cargo, supplies and personnel to and from the thousands of sites maintained along the coast of New England. The HC-144A "Ocean Sentry" is a Maritime Patrol Aircraft produced by the Spanish subsidiary of the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Co. (EADS). First unveiled in 2006, the CN-235A (official USCG designation HC-144A) is currently being produced and delivered to the Coast Guard.
The aircraft were certified as the all-around Coast Guard choice for its Medium Range Surveillance (MRS) Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) by then Commandant Adm. Thomas Collins, in 2003. They are part of the Deepwater program, an extensive acquisition overhaul that touches the entire Coast Guard fleet of operational forces. Learn More About USCG Air Station Cape Cod HERE!!
